| #1silverthermosJan 07, 2015 2:19:47 | So I went to visit with my nephew and niece the other night.
Since I figured it was only going to be me in the campaign I asked to play two characters. Then my nieces bf joined as well. So I rolled up Hill Dwarves. Barbarian & Cleric.
Hill Dwarf / Outlander / Barbarian Level 1 stats: 13str 18dex 19con 11int 12wis 7cha (In hindsight I should have put the 11 in Cha) AC: 18 / 20 with a shield (which he gets later). 17hps
AC 15 Chainmail & Shield 8hps
and my nieces BF created a mage halfling. sorry didn't get the stats.
Background of the two twins Travik "Boom" Stoneraven & Delg "Bewn" Stoneraven (yes I took that from Borderlands 2 *lol*) Travik was stolen in a raid as an infant. Delg was raised into the clergy and they met on the battlefield. Having found one another they grew close. Travik has a vision of adventure and glory and Delg follows and is labeled a heretic by the church of Moridin.
Delg is an optimist and leaves with Travik and their trusty steed Geoffrey (mule) and a cart ladened with feed and rations. They meet up with the halfling who introduces himself as some long name "Glimmer" on the road and after some crude jokes become friends.
They encounter goblins who fall out of a tree because of a botched stealth roll (the all mighty 1) after they go into save meat and any possible alcohol as both the dwarves are very thirsty and are tired of eating rations. So this was the first encounter. We win but 1 goblin flees. Then we bumbled down the road licking our wounds and go into the town.
The barbarian already makes a name for the twins and puts us at a disadvantage in the tavern and with surrounding suppliers. But that doesn't detere Delg. nor Travik who entices a young woman but is soon **** blocked by her guardian. The halfling makes a deal as the dwarves are looked down upon and told they are no longer welcome in the inn unless they save the supplies that were due some days back. And upon the halflings deal they are like "we're part of this deal too!" and the halfling states he doesn't know the two, but the dwarves exclaim "Come on! Glimmer you know us! it's us Boom Bewm!" which is their formal introduction to the halfling.
The next day at a disadvantage Delg & the Halfling Glimmer strike up deals and manage to convert the mercantile owner to the word of Moridin and get a 5% discount. They learn of the local bandits. And also about some bugbear. But what's more important is that they have the holy brew as hostage and they have to recover this at all costs.
So they go back to their meeting with goblins to find the site is clear as if nothing occured. After we secured our mighty steed. We tracked the goblins to their hideout. Where we have a bloody battle. We stacked up corpse upon corpse to build a wall. to buy time. Wolves and goblins alike.
in 1 day after leaving our mage dropped. We healed him. our cleric dropped after an attack of opportunity knocked him from full health to 0. he stabilized with help of the halfling. we had to wait 3 hours for him to return to us. We are out of healing, the cleric has 1 spell to stabilize a fallen member. The mage and barbarian manage to buy the time to get the cleric back up. But the mage drops in the next skirmish and now all spells are gone.
So we are back to buying time.
We managed to take a goblin hostage. And we buy time for the mage to recover. We rest to regain some of our hps. We interrogate the goblin and find that it's 3 vs 100 but screw it we got this! And while buying the casters time to get a full rest to recover their spells the barbarian bites the dust. (hail 2 botched stealth rolls. fricken 1's!) And all all the intimidation checks failed even with the help of a scarecrow. The goblins have retreated into their cave and the casters regain their spells.
The cleric who just lost his brother finds his goal in life to take down the leader of this cave regardless of the odds. giving him a traditional burial he shares his plan with the halfling and gives him the option to leave with his life or bet it on his gamble. The halfling says I'm with you. We got this!
The cleric casts 3 thaumaturgy spells. Booming voice, Shaking the ground. And making lights flicker. and 2 sanctuary spells. He yells in his loud booming voice that the inhabitants surrender (nat 20 baby!) along with the trembling ground and the flickering lights. Cowed the remaining goblins in the cave! But still being on the safe side sanctuary x2!
We charged into the cave to meet the bugbear who failed his save against the sanctuary on the mage, who tells him that if he doesn't surrender he will send him to his death in the eternal flame, and then proceeds to grapple the cleric who has been bitten by his pet wolf! But still with moridin on his lips the cleric continued on! The mage douses the Bugbear with oil and sets him on fire! and does so again the next round. Then, finally a burning hands ignites the oil on the cleric. With a smile on his lips my cleric died knowing that his gamble has paid off greatly! The pet dog also set himself on fire (hail the mighty 1) and all three are imolated into oblivion!
This! This is why I love the DnD universe. we completed this section in 8hrs all 3 still at level1and though we lost 2/3's of the party I extremely enjoyed every minute. My nephew is a new DM but he did an excellent job. I want to say thank you to WotC and the new 5th ed series for bringing me much joy.
And even though this was a side mission that was suppose to be given for the people of the town. We started it and did it for the booze! and we managed it with just 3. And the DM was a dick because he didn't hold back, but hehe it was all in the dice rolls anyhow. We had some mishaps but all in all the outcome was pretty epic.
Later as we laughed about everything that occured we realized that the story was very much akin to the movie 300 without realizing how close it ran along that path. 3 vs 100... 300 vs 10000 (or more who knows) we say 100 because we never did find out how many goblins were in that cave but that's what the captured said before we set the bastard on fire. The Barbarian having worn his lions head mantle equating to Leonitus' survival against the wolf. The oracle sequence being the vision the Barbarian received. The council being the church who labeled the cleric as a heretic. The piling of the bodies to wedge us into a grove to staunch the goblin attacks. The trials at intimidation that never worked for my Barbarian. The amount of arrows sticking from the barbarians corpse when he finally went down. It was all rather amusing laughing at the similarities afterwards.

Reminds me of one of my all-time favorite campaigns (2e era). It also started as a spontaneous "Hey, wanna play something?" moments with a single player. It eventually escalated into a multi-player, 3-year long campaign.
Good times! |
