| #1mestewart3Jul 03, 2014 21:57:19 | Aside from my still rather major missgivings about the lack of variety for martial characters, caster power and low level fragility ( A All of which may still be rectified *Fingers Crossed for a "use a manuver as a bonus action when you use your Action to attack" feature for fighters in the PHB*) and some missgivings about how some of the math adds up in this game (apparently casters can outdamage fighters?). I am actually pleasently suprised by a lot of the basic mechanics of what I am seeing here, it seems to have taken a lot of the fiddly bits and sharp edges out of the basic rules and I could see things running pretty smooth in this edition.
That being said I have a question from the basic PDF.
The Question: The rules state that when you take an extended rest you regain half of your total Hit Dice. However at level one (seeing as everything rounds down) that means you would never ever get your Hit Die back, this HAS to be wrong yet I can't find anything clarifying it. I think I just found the first Errata of 5e! Do I win a prize?
P.S. feel free to add your own gripes if you want to.

| #3NicodaudelJul 04, 2014 0:11:36 | I'm with pikunui. The rule should definitely be clarified, but I can't imagine the devs didn't intend for PCs to regain a minimum of 1 HD after each long rest. It seems unnecessarily (and inexplicably) punitive for already-fragile 1st-level PCs to be unable to regain HDs after resting. |
| #4pauln6Jul 04, 2014 0:33:47 | The simplest fix for squishy level 1 PCs is to allow 2HD at level1 (1x max hp plus 1x averaged/rolled plus Con). In 1e rangers got 2HD at level 1 and it made a huge difference to enjoyability and playability. It also covers your half hit dice issue. |
| #5HollowMan42Jul 04, 2014 6:28:46 | As others have mentioned, the playtest said to round up with regards to recovering half of max hit dice after a long rest, so it's possible that was accidentally excluded from the Basic pdf.

| #7KalafaxJul 04, 2014 7:50:38 | When rounding down, the rule has always been rounded down to a minimum of 1, so I dont think they felt they needed to clarify, but I guess I can see how its an issue for some people. |

Unless I am totally misunderstanding something. |

Just this morning! |

| #15pukunuiJul 04, 2014 23:20:54 | My only real gripe with 5e has to do with the way they've formatted spellcasting monsters. They're going to be a pain in the butt to use ~ you'll either have to write out all the spells in advance or flip through the PHB when you want to use one. I was hoping we wouldn't see this kind of thing again after 3e. |
| #16TheZigZagistJul 05, 2014 21:39:59 | - Not a fan of the realms at all, wish they'd kept specific campaign world quotes and references out altogether. - Having a hard time getting over the layout as seen thus far (thanking the gods it's a .pdf). I find the information to be scattered about rather unintuitively, and yet again with the column and page split charts and stat entries due to randomly placed fluff box inserts.
That's my beefs. I'm likely a minority on these issues, I'll get over it I think. |

And you're 1st level for about 2 hrs real time. No big deal there. |

| #23JenksJul 06, 2014 3:49:15 | As far as vulnerability at level 1 goes, I do believe Mike mentioned in an article that they specifically made it the way they did so that folks who want the dangerous low levels can start at level 1, and those who want the more competent and survivable characters can start at level 3ish.
This way both groups get what they want without having to include overcomplicated rules changes. |
