It is the third year with no summer and the snow comes from all directions. The skalds and runepriests tell us that in this age, "There will be innumerable wars. Ties of blood will no longer be respected. Next-of-kin will lie together. And brother will kill brother." It is the eve of Ragnarok, when it is said the white wyrm, Fimbulvetr, will devour the last people in the world and usher in an age of endless night.
Here in the meadhall of Jarl Osvald, who withers an old man upon his high seat, we sup on the last of our meager provisions, sure that there will be no tomorrow. We raise our horns to the honored dead, fortunate to have died in the kin-wars long before this night. The jarl's son, Tor, rallies warriors who will support his succession. Helga, sole daughter of Osvald, twin sister of Tor - and lover to both - allies with others to buttress her claim.
Brother will kill brother this night. And Fimbulvetr is coming.
A sudden and rare spot in my schedule has cleared up enough for me to run a one-shot adventure for a pick-up group. This Friday, May 1st, 2 pm Eastern, I would like to run my viking-themed scenario, Fimbulvetr, in D&D 5e for four players. I've run this before in D&D 4e and now I've converted it to the new edition. Although I don't think it will take that long, I'm blocking out 4 hours to play it from start to finish.
This is an 8th-level scenario to be played on Roll20. Pre-generated characters have been created and are ready to go:
- Bjorn Half-Ork, half-orc barbarian
- Ragna Wolfsbane, human ranger
- Gunther Runepriest, dwarf cleric
- Ingrid Darkelf, drow sorcerer
Ideal players will be somewhat experienced with D&D 5e and Roll20 and be an active participant in these forums. If possible, I would like to have one of those players be savvy enough with technology to broadcast the game to YouTube so others can watch or view it after the fact. Everyone should have a headset/microphone for voice chat and a PHB for reference. As well, all players should have a good attitude and be ready to tell an epic story of vikingesque warriors on the last night before Ragnarok. Will you earn your way into Valhalla through your deeds or be cursed to walk the earth as draugr during the long night?
If you're interested in playing or helping in some way, please let it be known. Open question to all - what sorts of viking-themed adventures and characters have you played in your D&D career?

I LOVE Viking and Northman settings.
I think the most noteworthy campaign that I played with a heavy Viking theme was a conversion and adaptation of the movie 'The Thirteenth Warrior' to D&D 3 ed.
The party played as companions of the mighty Buliwyf in a bitter struggle to defeat the Wendol and save the doomed village.
I played as Istbor. I was a fighter/bard = Skald
I also have Kvaldhir Ironheart a brigand chief fighter and for my less serious campaigns, Rumble Thirst the Barbarian.
. The entirety of the time I played him was spent battling serpent folk of various sorts in a steaming jungle, making outlandish boasts, & lamenting the fact that he'd been yanked out of Valhalla. The campaign ended with the party boarding a ship & sailing north to Borsons' homeland..... So how did a bombastic, Bragart, of a viking raider come to be trekking through the Amazon? As a prank on my fellow players! My original character (along with a slew of NPCs) perished in a fight with a polar worm of some sort. We were blasted by an ice breath weapon & then blown to bits when the thing exploded. The party spent a great deal of time/effort trying to res my character - from a random finger they picked up out of the rubble. Only they resurrected THE WRONG PERSON! Turns out they didnt pick up the right frozen bit! Sounds good, guys. Vikings are fun to play for sure.

How cool. I tried to get a Norse campaign going back in 2e with that old green Viking campaign sourcebook, but never made it past the first couple of adventures. And now Castles and Crusades has the Codex Nordica. One day…

I've run several Viking like NPC's, but never played one myself or did a whole campaign devoted to them, but it came close once in BirthRight, in the Rjurik Highlands.

A pretty epic adventure, start to finish, with great roleplayers!
Three out of four heroes made it into Valhalla with the last destined to walk the Midgard realm with the last people on earth until the endless night is lifted by a new dawn.
Günther Runepriest was the first to fall, the tattered remnants of the bile-soaked draugr that were not utterly consumed by his holy light, overrunning him.
Ragna Wolfsbane succumbed to them soon after, but not before sinking the shaft of the dragon-slayer arrow into the icy heart of Fimbulvetr.
Both were consumed by the burning sun summoned by Ingrid Darkelf who soon after bore the brunt of the white wyrm's wrath, mince meat for the dragon's claws of ice and bone.
Bjørn Half-Ork, made Jarl by demand of the people, did slay Fimbulvetr as his comrades passed on to Valhalla... and for his deeds was made to stalk the Midgard realm during the endless night.

Really enjoyed the game, there was RP, there was action, we were blessed with great players and a fair DM that made the game flow nicely.
My personal highlight was when the dragon came at me while I was on the roof of my house, i fell down, dashed into the door. Then the dragon blocked the entrance with a wall of ice, and flew to the other side, to smash through the opposite wall. That's when I planted a dragon-slaying arrow in his ugly undead snout, and then escaped through the only way I thought possible.... The chimney! I felt it was an awesome action scene.
I have a question related to playing on Roll20: it was my first time, and I had the feeling that even though all is coded, and all rolls are calculated by the system, it really takes a lot more time to play a session. I have the feeling that what we did in 5.5 hours could easily be achieved in 3 at a real table. Do you think this is something to do with using an "interface", or is it because we were playing "with minis"? Probably theater of the mind would have been faster?
Speaking as Bjorn, I had a blast too.
Regarding Roll20 - my first time too. I found I was fighting a 2sec delay on every mouse move and click, so I was spending the time-between-turns trying to get wrestle the screens into position to make my next move, instead of thinking about what would be the most fun move that would help the others. Bjorn is a simple character with not too many choices, so I maybe got away with it - I hope I didn't slow the game down too much, If I play on Roll20 again, I think I will set up a whole slew of # macros.
Favourite moment - critting the dragon.
I tried to die heroically like you guys, I really did. I went crazy and attacked all the BBEGs and ... they died instead of me. My character was overpowered! 
It's not so bad, here in Midgard, being Jarl of the entire world. As long as you like your beer cold. And your dinners.
