On Sunday we had a 10 hour session of D&D from around 1pm through to almost midnight. We finished of the Irteps Dish adventure and started and finished the Dead Form Above adventure both form the Quests of Doom PDF.
It is billed as a 5E ruleset 1E feel and I get this feeling a lot from the tone of the adventures. Lots of lycanthropes, diseases and the return of the infamous rot grubs in The Dead From Above. The PCs also got shrunk down to microscopic size in "Irteps Dish" and the "Dead from Above" involved a brawl in a flying Ossuary full of necromantic cloud giant spell casters. The PCs have also encountered elementals and lycanthropes in large numbers.
Most of these adventures have not been to hard but The Dead from Above is billed as an adventure for level 6-8 PCs and we went in with a 4 man party.
1 OotA Paladin 1 Bladelock 1 Sorcerer 1 Life Cleric
Not we had a reasonable degree of party optimization and high ability scores via rolled stats. For example the Paladin was rocking in with a 20 cha and 18 strength (and 6 dex oh well). The 1st room they encountered had 6 hill giants in it, the next room a pair of CloudGiants with 6 and 8 levels of wizard spellcasting ability.
And it went down hill from there. I would niot like to try this adventure with level 6 PCs unless you had a large 6 man party. Even an 8th level party would be pushing it without the right party composition IMHO. The Sorcerer casting a twin stoneskin helped at the start of the Dungeon and any Paladin with 20 cha is a huge asset to a party but the Oath of the Ancients half damage from spells aura saves the day with the PCs getting hit by multiple lightning bolts, cones of cold and ice storm.
Without that Paladin and twinned buff spells I think the PCs would have been dead. Twinned haste and twinned stoneskin are kind of excellent. The Bladelock got 3 short rests, 4 if you count the one she took at the start of the day to cast hex and make it last 8 hours using a 3rd level spell slot. THis was the 1st adventure where she got to use more than 1 short rest. Without the healer feat they also would have been dead. The last 2 fights were a level 9 Cloud giant wizard and her husbannd a giant with fighter abilites like shield bash and an 18-20 crit range and the final fight was 5 Hill Giants where the PCs were completely tanked with a single bless spell and charge left on a wand of lightning that got used. No healing potions, HD, healers kit or other ability was left to them including lay on hands, channel divinities etc.
That adventure reminded me of Against the Giants and Out of the Ashes in Dungeon 17 with a flying citidel and brutality.
Anyway some conclusions. 1. Oath of the Ancients Paladin is probably trhe best one. I have seen the Oath of Vengeance one to compare it with. That Paladin is just more damage.
2. Bladelock (ftr 1, Warlock XYZ) seems to be the best gish in the game. |
