| #19bitJul 18, 2014 4:49:17 | (I'm really not sure if this is the place for this, but none of the other sections seemed right either... please feel free to report and/or move/delete this topic if this isn't cool.)
I was hoping to start a discussion topic about the coolest dice sets / manufacuturers you've come across, ideally with a link to a store or at least a picture of the dice.
I've only ever bought a few "interesting" dice sets, one from q-workshop.com, but unfortunately the picture didn't accurately represent the dice and I never really used them (they're clear and the fancy numbers are really hard to read). This is what they actually look like:
Back when I ordered them, though, the picture on the site was on a tan-ish background, so they looked easier to read.
I also bought some bone mini dice from thinkgeek.com, but again they weren't that great. The d20 in particular is lopsided and doesn't roll well. Here's an image:
Looking back I wish I had gotten either the brushed steel or hematite ones because I feel like they would have been shaped better.
Anyway, currently I'm looking to get some dice made out of wood and a set made out of bone at some point in the future. Does anyone have any recommendations? I want to end this streak of bad dice! |
| #2Torg_SmithJul 18, 2014 5:06:38 | I usually buy Chessex dice. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_toys-and-games?ie=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=Chessex&node=165793011
I don't know if I would want wood dice as wood does not hold its shape well with moisture. |
| #3melloredJul 18, 2014 5:22:56 | My favorite dice are from gamescience.com
Nothing fancy, but the most precision dice you can find for cheap. |
| #4BlakestoneJul 18, 2014 5:32:27 | I've purchased dice from http://www.artisandice.com/ so far I've got a d20 and some d6's in Lignum Vitae. I've also got some D6's from their last kickstarter pending, some in bristlecone pine and some in mpingo. Wooden dice will not be as durable as polymers but they do still stand up to a fair bit of rolling.

One year, though, he showed up with some sets made out of dinosaur bone. He managed to purchase a dinosaur bone and had certification of authenticity. I ALMOST bought a set. The only reason I didn't was that I didn't want to spend more than $100 on dice that were very small, about a quarter of the size of a standard d6, and I'd never actually roll them. To this day, though, I wish I had bought them. How awesome would it be to own some dinosaur bone dice? |
| #6KarnosJul 18, 2014 6:55:08 | I only use dice crafted from white rhino horn.
Kidding of course.
I bought a couple of the "lb of dice" bags for sale on amazon, and that gave me a pretty good selection to get back into the hobby. None of them are special of course.
I like the idea of metallic dice, but I want to see them in person before blowing $100+ on dice sets. I insist on having at least 4 full sets of matching dice, so I can't just buy one set of metal dice and be happy, it's all or nothing. |

| #10TheLyonsJul 18, 2014 8:42:25 | I have 7 sets of wooden artisan dice and am waiting on 6 more. Each set comes with a matching pen and pencil of the same type of wood. It's coming in a large sized box and he's going to use pyrography to draw a picture my friend drew onto the wooden box itself. My favorite that I have is ancient kauri, which is a workable wood that's at least 50,000 thousand years old from when wooly mammoths still walked the earth. A tsunami knocked over some of these trees into a Swamp in New Zealand and it preserved them as workable wood this entire time. I decided to invest in these as I want a really cool, unique heirloom piece to pass down that displays my personality. I think these cover it. I'll post pics later. Everyone I've shown them to has been very impressed with their workmanship. |
| #11alienuxJul 18, 2014 9:01:37 | I had a full set of black dice with red rune-like markings on each face back in the late 1980s. It was a set of six (standard rpg dice minus the d10% die). I absolutely loved that dice set, but I lost is years ago and I've never been able to find another set quite like it (I've found sets that are sort of similar, but not quite as cool as those were). |
| #12BrightmantleJul 18, 2014 10:10:46 | Have you ever wanted a critical hit die that lit up and flashed when the 20 was the result? Think Geek makes these and their not to expensive. Kind of novel for sure. Check it out! http://www.amazon.com/Critical-Hit-LED-D20-Die/dp/B004AQ7U9Y/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_d_9 |

Over time I've owned a fair number of dice, and I've come to appriciate straightforward, easy to read, well made dice.
I would gladly pay for casino quality gaming dice.

if you want truly amazing dice, http://www.artisandice.com/ is the place, but be prepared to pay ;) |
| #16ElekesterJul 19, 2014 19:06:07 | Once upon a time I had the most beautiful dice in the world: Borealis - Royal Purple with Gold. If you play in a room at all dark it can be hard to read the numbers, but that never stopped me. What stopped me was letting my D20 roll off the table and into oblivion. The die was never found, even after a furniture reangement. My replacement dice set is grey with gold letters, not to exciting but I like the minimalism. |
