I'm not an expert in mechanics or balance, but hopefully this variant is at least fun and flavorful (which is what I think is lacking in the current ranger).
Fire away, Internet!
CLASS FEATURES As a ranger, you gain the following class features.
Hit Points Hit Dice: 1d10 per ranger level Hit Points at 1st Level: 10 + your Constitution modifier Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d10 (or 6) + your Constitution modifier per ranger level after 1st Proficiencies Armor: Light armor, shields Weapons: Simple weapons, martial weapons Tools: Herbalism kit Saving Throws: Strength, Dexterity Skills: Choose three from Animal Handling, Athletics, Insight, Investigation, Nature, Perception, Stealth, and Survival
EQUIPMENT You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background. • Leather armor • (a) two shortswords or (b) two martial melee weapons or (c) a martial weapon and a shield • (a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack • (a) a longbow and a quiver of 20 arrows or (b) a martial weapon
FAVORED OPPONENT At 1st level, you gain the ability to adapt to your enemies. You may change your Favored Opponent after a short rest or a long rest.
Choose a type of Favored Opponent: aberrations, beasts, celestials, constructs, dragons, elementals, fiends, giants, monstrosities, oozes, plants, undead, or one type of humanoid. Alternately, you may choose an individual creature as your Favored Opponent. An individual creature could be as varied as the orc chief that killed your family, the leader of the city thieves’ guild, the minotaur in the maze, the ankheg menacing local farmers, the dragon Ashardalon, the lich Acerarack, etc.
You have advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track your Favored Opponents, as well as on Intelligence checks to recall information about them.
At 6th level, you cannot be surprised by your Favored Opponent.
At 10th level, you gain advantage on saving throws against spells and conditions imposed by your Favored Opponents, as well as contested ability checks.
At 13th level, you do not have disadvantage on attack rolls against Favored Opponents you cannot see. You are also aware of the location of any invisible Favored Opponent within 30 feet of you, provided that the creature isn’t hidden from you and you aren’t blinded or deafened.
At 17th level, you may select two Favored Opponents after a short rest or a long rest.
Your Multiattack class feature applies only to your Favored Opponent.
FAVORED TERRAIN At 1st level, you gain the ability to adapt to your environment. You may change your Favored Terrain after a short rest or a long rest.
This class feature is similar to “Natural Explorer”, with all of the benefits described in the PHB. |

Adding additional enemies/terrains as you gain xp, OK. But not this conveniently switch to whatever needed that some of you are pushing. |
