So I just realized that, even with the update, we still have no rules for making or using traps. And I haven't found any articles that make mention of it. Has there been any word on what to expect (i.e. will it be in Basic or DMG, what the rules for trap creation will be like, if we'll get sample traps, etc.)?

i would imagine you'll need to wait for the DMG in november. although i imagine phandelver must have at least one trap in it.

Yeah...DMG.

The thing I'm really waiting for before I really can look at this game objectively.

I assume when the DMG releases, the free Basic pdf will have some bits like traps in it. They did say that by nov/dec the Basic Rules will be done, and still a free pdf download, but nothing will be added to it after that.

Something easy like a pit trap could be just made up now, though...It's a perception check. You fail it, you fall in, take falling damage (which is 1d6 per 10' in 5e, I believe). Other traps could do weapon damage (arrow trap), but be based on a dex save, or even an attack on AC...Or spell damage (flaming hands from a hole in a wall), again, based on a save. 1/2 damage on a miss, etc.

Really most simple traps are an 'attack' on you...Disarming one would require passing the perception check, then the int or dex check to disarm it...set any DC you feel is appropriate...

There are traps in Hoard of the DQ. Usually a Wisdom (Perception) check to detect and a save to avoid damage or some other effect. Acid traps, spikes, ceiling collapsing traps etc.

DC x to detect

DC y to evade/avoid

DC z to disarm

nDm dice of damge

The basic framework should be pretty self-evident.

The "missing" bit would be the designer's intent on damage per level. 1d6 per PC proficiency bonus seems like a decent starting point, scale to taste.

A lot of 1e/2e traps seem to fit right into 5e. 4e traps need to be toned down (lowering their DCs and damage). Not enough 3e experience to comment on those.
