I made a crude one, not really suitable for uploading.   It should work well enough for our intro to 5e game tomorrow though.

I don't normally use a DM screen, but when I do, I use my Charles in Charge Trapper Keeper. I put some duct tape over "Charles" and wrote "DM" in its place in permanent black marker and underlined it three times. Scott Baio doesn't say **** more than once, got it?

This reminds me to keep an eye out for the official one.  By the time I started playing 4th editions, they'd stopped printing the darn thing.  I don't want that to happen again.

I just prop a breastplate on the table in front of me. Works just fine.

I'm going to look into making one myself. I've made one in the past with the same basic premise. Mine ideally involve panels with card stock backs w/plastic page protectors glued to them so I can swap out sheets as needed. For those sheets, I'm imagining:

- 3 Panels, portrait AND landscape versions

- 1 Panel for common conditions & grapple/push/shove/jump rules

- 1 Panel for DCs for common tasks (climbing various wall types. jump distances, maybe common traps?)

- 1 Panel for fiddly random rules and maybe the skill descriptions. I usually use this panel for story bits with a swappable format

I find landscape vs portrait is usually just a matter of kitchen table vs coffee table.

i use the 1e city of brass one. when people ask what the numbers and charts do, i just tell them it's a secret and slither away.

Alright, this should be a link to my attempt at some DM screen inserts.

If it works for you, great, but if not... hold out for when WotC makes their official screen early next year - either it will be fantastic, or I'll be motivated to do better than it does.

Dude. I'm usually like "If a fan-made DM screen (or other stuff) isn't made by me, it's typically crappy" (not because I think I'm all "mad skillz" or whatever, but because I'm so used to seeing crap-quality offerings on the webz). So it's with some shock that I looked at Aron's efforts and dug what I saw—really nicely done! Bravo, mi hombre!

Thanks for the praise folks, glad to see I wasn't staggeringly off the mark.

And Azzy, don't feel too bad - I am the same way when it comes to other people's fan-made stuff. I'm always thinking "Brace yourself!" while the file is loading for me to check things out.

What font did you use for that screen, Aaron? I think the screen is great, but I evidently don't have the font and it makes a mess when I try and print it. So, I will go get the font, if you can tell me the name.

Thanks for sharing this, it's very useful.

Some thoughts:

  • Re-allocate the page contents into three cagetories, with one page for each: "Travel and non-combat", "Combat", and "Commonly looked-up rules"
  • Page 1, "Travel and non-combat", could be the same as your current page 1, but remove the "combat step-by-step" section and add the "character advancement" section
  • Page 2, "Combat", could include "Combat step-by-step", "actions in combat" (shortened), "conditions" (shortened), and a list of common reactions and bonus actions
  • Page 3, "commonly looked-up rules", could include the "using each ability" section (shortened), plus details on things like hiding/stealth, grappling, concentration, readying an action, death rules, exhaustion

Thanks again!
