Are bab, skill points, and feats worth missing?

I can't shake the idea that proficiency bonus and so many things being based on core stats has taken class differences down. A 4th level fighter and a 4th level wizard with the same strength score can do the same amount of damage. So can a 1st level fighter and a 3rd. The same basic principles go with skill proficiencies. I dunno. Do you think these changes are for the best?

Yes.  There are so many things that distinguish the classes, basic attack bonuses aren't necessary to do so.  The game still has feats -- if you mean the fact that characters get the same amount of feats, they aren't going to be picking the same feats.  The classes are differentiated by something more interesting than "this class has a 10% better chance at doing action x than this other class."  In my 5e game, none of the 5 PCs seem anything like one another.

The classes/characters in 5th also don't gain the same number of feats, for the record.

But...but...wizards are supposed to be squishy!

I want things like BAB, prof. bonus, feats options/ability increases, and XP to level up to be equal across all the classes. While I see why the fighter gets 2 more feat/ability increases than any other class, I don't like it.

It'd be better, IMO, to give the fighter more fighter things as they leveled up to keep them consistant with damage output, etc. More ability increases/feats isn't the best idea. It gets weird when a fighter can bump a stat with two more +2's. Plus, it allows for a 'variant' human to have 3 more feats than anyone else who's not a human fighter in addition to 4 stat bumps at levels 4, 8, 12, and 19.

As far as class differences, I don't find that to be an issue. The 5e classes are vary different, IMO. But, so were the 4e classes. And the 3e classes...And the 2e classes... I never got that 4e arguement either. (ie: everyone has AEDU's so, therefore, all the classes are the same.)

I'm extremely happy that those things are gone.  Those were uneccesary mechanical penalties that exists purely to created design space for to inflate the number of feats.

It might be possible to create an optional rule for Armor as DR, but it is more difficult to add it in later than if you build it into the system.

Also there is no single damage value that matches up to the value of a +1/-1 to avoiding the attack in a game where so many things rely on damage scaling.

The idea of reducing damage by fractions however does seem like it could be going somewhere.
