| #1Azzy1974Aug 05, 2015 17:30:20 | Inspired by another thread that has run amok and lost all relavancey, I've decided to come up with a handy, surefire way to determine if you are playing D&D the correct way or if you're doing it completely wrong. I've even got it done to one, single yes or no question:
Are you and the rest of your gaming group having fun?
If you answered "yes:, then congratulations—you're doing it right!
If you answered "no", however, you're obviously doing something wrong. Try a different approach. When you've done so, ask the above yes/no question again. Keep repeating this process until you can honestly respond "yes" to that question. As long as you respond "yes", it doesn't matter what anyone else, anywhere else thinks—because they're not in your gaming group and so their opinion doesn't matter one whit.
It reall is that easy, and it does work! Just try it out for free if you don't believe me—you're sure to see positive results. |
| #2arnwolf666Aug 05, 2015 17:50:30 | I'm having fun because all my players are miserable MWAHAHAHAHA!!!
Just kidding. Nice Post. |
| #3BrimleydowerAug 05, 2015 18:15:40 | You and the rest of your group might be having fun, but are you and the rest of your group having THE RIGHT fun? |

| #6ankiyavonAug 05, 2015 19:38:14 | You might be having some fun, but I'm sure you'd be having more fun if you were to play my way!
It's scientific fact, it's the best, everyone could have more fun by doing exactly what I say! |

| #8Awakened_GazeboAug 05, 2015 20:44:40 | Im a superior elitsist roleplayer purist- of course we are having fun. You can try to unlearn your kind of fun and try to learn the correct way of fun- but I doubt you can, its more about talent than merely unlearning to like the colour orange, or to learn to prefer a different sexuality- yes IM that superior. |
| #9TenaciousJAug 05, 2015 21:29:42 | My group plays completely wrong. I allow evil characters, the hobgoblins are a legitimate, somewhat-civilized part of society, I purposely allow people to have stats far beyond recommended point buy, and I give bonus feats and ability score increases. The group has only been in a proper dungeon about 5 sessions since January, and there's no hoards of treasure just waiting around, |

| #12Rya.ReisenderAug 05, 2015 23:39:09 | The real complication starts if some have fun and others don't, though! |
| #13NoonAug 06, 2015 0:16:59 | I'd say the real complication is that pure fun is like eating pure suger. Saying 'are you having fun?' as the only qualifier kind of implies that if we're not having 100% fun and only 90% fun, were doin' it wrongzorz!
People generally want some amount of rough to their play - as much as people like some bitter in their beer. Guess what - I don't have fun when my character gets knocked to zero HP. But I still want the chance to be knocked down to zero to be there even though I wont always be having 100% fun! How crazy complex am I? Not really at all. Everyone wants some amount of rough to their play.
When people don't want the same rough but think theirs is the way you game (so much so they don't even have to talk about it when inviting someone to play), then there's trouble... |

| #15Rya.ReisenderAug 06, 2015 2:48:23 | I see the problem with the discussions here that I often just can't find out what the goal of the posters is. Like... you have someone saying "I just want to understand why people like this more", which for me means that poster doesn't want to convince others of his playstyle, instead he's just curious of the thought process of other players, only to later radically change to "You are doing it wrong" when someone explains it to him. In the end everything seems to end up with people claiming the others are wrong rather then with "Aha I see so that's why".
I use my style because it's the most fun, I won't change it just because someone else thinks it's bad. I do enjoy discussing with others and see different playstyles, but I don't want others trying to convince me of their style at all cost. If anything, I might try out an interesting concept I read about of my own accord. |

| #17DemoMonkeyAug 06, 2015 4:37:26 | It's possible to play D&D wrong, just like it's possible to play any game wrong.
It's also entirely possible to have FUN playing it wrong.
The two things are not connected.
Now, if you asked me which of the two is more important - playing right or having fun - I would land squarely in the "fun" camp. |

| #20sleypyAug 06, 2015 7:22:12 | My players demand a 20% increase in fun every quarter. This means I have to hold back on fun and release it just prior to the quarterly PC Holder Meetings. I had to release several NPC from the fun development team to make the numbers work this month. |
| #42AaronOfBarbariaAug 06, 2015 21:52:52 | Okay Noon, I see where our disconnect is: you are saying there are unfun things that you want included in the game because they have a use - and I am saying that anything/everything I want included in the game is part of the fun or I wouldn't want to include it. |

| #45ZardnaarAug 07, 2015 3:22:09 | There has been a group locally playing D&D wrong. One group chant praises to Gygax while bending down on the left knee. The other group chants praises to Gygax while lending on the right knee!!! Clearly one of these groups is doing something wrong. Heretics. |

| #48scythebladexAug 07, 2015 8:01:23 | Yeah, basically. In the group I DM, I have a Metagamer ("Yeah, that old lady is probably a jackalwere, I shoot her with eldritch blast, regardless of whatever I roll on my insight check"), a Rules Lawyer ("but the monster manual says there is a ritual to create a spectator from the eye stalks of a beholder, where do I learn to do that"), a Power Gamer ("Finally I can rage with an extra attack, frenzy, and reroll damage using that feat I wanted. Dibs on the next belt of giant strangth!"), and of course a "Wake me up when it's my turn to do something" guy.
I work hard to make missions that appeal to all of their interests, balancing RP, Combat, and Problemsolving, sometimes failing, often succeeding.
And you know what....? This is the most fun I have ever had playing D&D, and we all look forward to each new mission. Mission 23 using 5th Edition is coming up Tuesday, very psyched! |
| #49Rya.ReisenderAug 07, 2015 11:11:25 | If you add a guy that mostly just wants to realistically play his role, then that's pretty much my group. Though I must say I really like the roleplayer and the rules lawyer the most (it terms of how much fun I have playing with them). |
