Arkhosia and BaelTurath in Faerun??

So from 4th Edition, I understand that the ancient empires of Arkhosia and Bael Turath are officially located in the world of Nerath.

Incidentally, no one that I know plays D&D actually has ever played a D&D campaign in... Nerath.  Everyone plays in the Forgotten Realms, or maybe Eberron, Greyhawk, Athas, etc.  But Nerath?  Possibly less than 2% of all D&D groups even do Nerath.

But the concept and lore of Arkhosia and Bael Turath is just too good. It's juicy stuff on the history of dragonborns and tieflings. So I was wondering if anyone managed to "fit" them into the history of their FR world?  They were once huge empires, so the areas they cover would include several cities with many ruins, etc.  Where in Faerun could you place them?  Maybe not in the continent of Faerun, but in one of the other vague-mentioned continents of Toril?

Or would this be "breaking" the official lore of the Forgotten Realms too much.  For example, if the Nerathian history of dragonborns and tieflings is about the ancient empires of Arkhosia and Bael Turath.... then does the Forgotten Realms have a different explanation about the ancient cultures and homelands of the dragonborns and tieflings?

I wouldn't worry about breaking traditional lore. TSR and WotC have already done an awful job of kitchen-sinking the setting to excruciating levels. Even so, there's still vast areas that are seldom ever detailed or visited where you could plug in stuff if you'd like. Or just invent an island or small continent elsewhere if necessary. For myself, I think the Realms yield a far better experience when you shape it/own it at your own table.

I would place the Nerath setting in one of the places where map-makers like to write "Here be dragons".

Faerun is one part of a larger continent, which includes a China-like area (Kara-Tur) and an Arabia-like area (Zakhara?) in addition to Faerun as "Europe".  Another continent - Maztica - to the west of Faerun is approximately Aztec / Inca America.  There is room for another continent well to the south of Maztica that could hold Nerath.

I've seen a "world map of Abeir / Toril" but only the areas I described have been developed much.  There's still plenty of room on the other side of the globe for you to fill in.

Dragonborn have their own civilizations in FR and are from Aebir and came into the Realms when parts of Aebir supplanted regions of the Realms (including the continent of Maztica) during the Spellplague. Tieflings in the realms were 2e style Tieflings with more variety and less uniform "fiendish" looks. THen during the Spellplague when Asmodeus ascended to godhood (using sparks of divinity from Azuth) he used a coven of tiefling warlocks and their bargain turned all tieflings in the Realms into the 4e/5e version of tieflings.

Most of that lore can be found in the 4e FR Campaign Guide and a bit from some of the recent novels (Brimstone Angels series for the history of the tieflings being changed).

Arkhosia could always have been a realm in Abeir, so the dragonborn who've come into Faerûn might know about it. Maybe there are still portals here and there, left over from the Spellplague, granting access to some of its ruins.

Right off the bat theres this giant patch of desert smack in the upper middle section of most versions of the FR map....

I think thats a GREAT place to have once been the Tiefling homeland.

Eh you've had Sthrad Von Zarovich connected to forgotten realms via Jander Sunstar for years and years. So I think you could do worse by adding those two kingdoms my via that returned continent when FR picked up Dragonborn.

Then again...heh I kind of hope they bring back castle ravenloft sooner than later. It seems like we wont be leaving the sword coast any time soon anytime soon as far as setting go.

They kind of did this allready with Elemental evil as well and now Ravenloft is mentined as being part of a great wheel demiplane in our psudo FR "Core."

It's a bit of a mess, but eh here's hoping.

Assuming you want to plug it into the existing areas and ignoring the 4E fluff and earlier fluff. There are continents that have not been detailed and the 3E FRCS has a global map. If you just want to ignore the existing fluff replacing Netheril is one option and the Dragonborn could be plugged into the western heartlands, ancienbt Cormyr or the western heartlands.

Why not just use Nerath and the Nentir Vale? Lots of setting info that can be fit together however you want.

As others have said, plenty of room to place either, you have Anchrorome to the north of Maztica, Katashaka "The Land of the Tarrasque" to the south of Maztica, and you have Osse, south of Kara Tur.

My suggestion is to use some ideas of background about the chronomancers from 2nd Ed, like the time spheres. Maybe the PCs could to travel to a alternative "Realspace" with a different time line, and even a time sphere where the background of the main D&D worlds are mixed (and some zones with alien colonies from d20 Future). Some gods could create demiplanes where some loyal petitioners are alive again with past memories, like a reward and to breed more loyal followers.

There's always the Dread Mists. Isn't that how they incorporated Ravenloft into 4E? I could see something like Bael Tuath having ended up there, maybe dragging Arkhosia kicking and screaming.

Another option is the empire of Arkhosia became a demiplane, and added to Io's blood isles from "Councyl of Wryns", and Bael Turath has got a clonning demiplane linked to the infernal gate-towns from the Outlands (the plane where we can find the city of Sigil).

One of the Novels had people travelling between the two settings via Sigil. So you could just use that connection to the City of Doors without changing any canon.
