Avenger (inspired by UA: Modifying Classes)

So after reading the Unearthed Arcana article: Modifying Classes I have decided to try and re-create the 4E Avenger. Now luckily a large portion of the class is already handled with the Oath of Vengeance Paladin. In fact there's only a few things that I feel need tweaked to make the class more "Avenger-like". As such, here are my suggestions for doing so. I tried to keep to the guidelines of the article so I hope I didn't over-do it with Divine Censure. I don't want to make this version outshine or in anyway make the options presented as "Must Haves" compared to the official product.

As always constructive criticism is very much appreciated.

Avenger (alternative Paladin options)

PROFICIENCIES
Armor: None

ARMOR OF FAITH
Beginning at 1st level, while you are wearing no armor and not wielding a shield, your AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Charisma modifier.

DIVINE CENSURE
Your strength and conviction to your deity, church, or oath is growing and you gain a sense of righteousness that helps fuel your motives and ideals. This zeal confers a specific bonus depending on your choice on censuring your enemies. As a bonus action on your turn, choose one foe that you can see. You gain your censure’s benefit against that foe until the creature dies, flees from your sight for 10 minutes or more, or are incompacitated.  From the list below, choose one. From now on when you issue your Censure you gain the benefits of the feature below. Once divine censure is used, you must perform a long rest to restore it.

·         Censure of Pursuit: You may use the Dash action as a reaction whenever the target of your censure attempts to move away from you. You may only use Dash to move closer to the target of your censure.

·         Censure of Retribution: You add your proficiency bonus to damage rolls each turn you have taken damage from an enemy other than your censured target. This bonus damage may only be applied once per turn, even if you have more than one attack.

·         Censure of Unity: So long as you have an ally adjacent to your censured target, you or one adjacent ally can have advantage on attack rolls against the target.

This feature replaces a paladin’s Lay on Hands feature.

FIGHTING STYLE
Avengers forgo the protective properties of armor and shields, thus they have no need for the Protection or Defense style. Instead, add the following Fighting Styles to those chosen at 2nd level.

• Archery

• Two-Weapon Fighting

A class needs:

- An interesting background. Why is it a special character?

- Right balance of power, of course.

- Fun gameplay. To avoid be complicate (classes could be used by DM for nPC bosses) or specialize, and the class features enough interesting to be used by most of players.

How do I imagine a D&D avenger? Like a witch-hunter, vampire-slayer or the inquisitor from Pathfinder rpg, with less armour but more offensive than paladin, with some trick agains mind-affecting powers.

Another suggestion is to be a hybrid class, with some low level divine spell and a ki maneuver (encounter power from 3.5 "Tome of Battle: Book of Nine Swords").

Looks pretty good. The only thing I would change is this:

I am not sure you need to exclude the defensive style. The bonus to AC could also be derived from the stance or movements the character makes while in combat.  Being careful to keep up a strong guard or to move in a way that provides less openings to attacks would still increase your AC and would make sense to a lightly armored (or armorless) combatant.

Unless of you just simply do not want it and prefer the avenger to be a bit more squishy AC wise. In which case, that is fine.

I mention it since that is only two choices for fighting style, and I get why one may not want to include two-weapon fighting when you want to use that bonus action for directing your censor.

Food for thought I guess. So far I like the way it is shapping up.  I really enjoyed the avenger class from 4e.

I'm at work, so I don't have time to fully analyze this, but one thing I was looking at when making a Paladin/Rogue a while ago was Cunning Action. Especially the Disengage option, which neatly emulates the 4e Avenger's many powers which included shifting, IMO. I think it would be better fit for an Avenger than Lay on Hands, but would swapping LoH for CA be considered okay/balanced?
