While I am disapponted at the lack of high challenge beasties (as my party is currently level 11), it seems like low challenge monsters will still be viable for high level PCs. But still, I hope the MM has more high challenge monsters.
I love all the swarms! And I especially love that there are TONS of choices for low level characters to fight.
Higher hit die size for bigger creatures is cool, but negated by the complete randomness of number of hit dice given to each creature. For example, the Satyr (Medium Challenge 1/2) has 7 hit dice, while the Warhorse (Large Challenge 1/2) has 3. I think I only find it odd because I associate hit dice with level, but monsters are built differently from PCs; ultimately I think that is good. I do want to see what sort of rules go into building monsters.
My only (silly) complaint: Hyenas are Challenge 0! The same as a bat or cat! I think not! Poor hyenas never get anything nice.
My actual complaint: running monsters with spells is impossible to do on the fly unless you have all the spells memorized. Looking up spells takes a lot of time. I would much prefer a quick and dirty summary for the spells to be listed in the monster stat block. In addition, after already illustrating the fact that monsters can (and should) be built differently from PCs, it seems silly to blindly require spellcaster Monsters to use the same rules as PCs. Especially the part on NPCs that says you can replace spells with other spells of the same level without changing the challenge of the NPC. Oh, well, seems easy enough to customize.... |

Thanks. |
