Battlesystem?

I love the DMG. I like the toolsets, I like the magic items, I like the info on building worlds and towns and multiverses even though I'm unlikely to ever use that last because high-end interplanar adventuring doesn't much interest me as a DM. I like the variants.

But wasn't Battlesystem supposed to be in there? Anyone know where it went?

Ah, all right. Thanks.

Drat, though. I was kind of relying on having it sooner rather than later.

If you've got a 1e or 2e Battlesystem book, you could go with that. I plan on using 1e Battlesystem for my 5e campaign (assuming my table has any wargame fans).

ROugh idea of a battle system, Dont change anythig really. Make a character as normal, but now field it with 4-6 units. You now have a small unit. As you chip off hit points, lose a soilder. All units follow the same subclass, so you dont have 1 Beastmaster Ranger, and 4 Hunter Rangers. Squads take feats as a whole.

Units share a pool of hp, but can each attack seperately, and change weapos. So a squad of 6 fighters can have any combination of their melee and range weapons. Attack as normal.

When recovering hit points, you do not bring units back. You may So a squad with 4 max units and 40 total hit points, will not regain a lost unit whe it recovers hit points from below 30 to above. The squads max hp is still 40, but they cannot recover fallen units.

Squads with spell casting cast the same spell with their action, and share spell slots.

Alt rule for faster combat: all members of a squad attack with same weapon, though weapons with thrown property can be thrown if they are not in melee range.

i might make my own thread with a lot more detail rules

My houserule is the squads works like one creature with monster traits like swamns, and I use "pain points". When a squad loses all pain points it is desmoraliced and starts to run away.

For me the true problem is the right balance of power when there are warmachines like catapults, high level spellcasters (who litterally can change the battle field), or firearms. Some troops are really dangerous...until ammuniton is exhausted.
