Interesting. But you should remember that if PCs can use them, also monster humanoids.

For me the trouble is about gunslingers should be higher XP value. A goblin with an axe and a shield, and a goblin with a mustekeer from the top of a tree are the same creature with the same stats but two totally different menaces. Maybe we need something like a monster template for "extra help". What if the firearms are stolen by a group of gnolls, or sold to a hobgoblin warlord.

Another point are the housebrew rules about magic vs firearms. Maybe gods of war give extra divine spells againts ballistic damage or to block cannons.

Kind of a gloss over article really.  The great thing about D20 Modern was how streamlined the Classes and Rules were as compared to 3.5e.  One of the reasons SWSE and D20 Modern are both two of my favorite Rules Guides is because of how well they work at the table.

I think he'd have to do some serious revision of Classes and Rules guidelines to get the same kind of Feel that D20 Modern brought to the table, and I don't seem them putting that much effort into doing so.  At least, if their 'Eberron' articles were any indication.

Oh yeah, what happened to those?!  They kinda just dropped them on us, said they'd be working on refining them, and then moved onto the next thing.

Seems to me they're just jumping around from Idea to idea, not actually putting any time or effort into the series.

I appreciate seeing stuff like this. I like that WotC is putting forth the effort to give us material for inspiration. I also think it's great that they're showing us stuff that's NOT fully worked out. It's okay to have new stuff evolving without strict mechanics. Don't think too hard just have fun. ;)

It’s not a modern campaign, but my current campaign is in the Renaissance and has firearms. Sadly, most of the PCs have ignored them, but that’s probably because they’re pretty expensive and the PCs are still pretty poor at low to mid level. I’ve been thinking about stepping up to make them more interesting by adding enchantments and special bullets.

Half-baked ideas are what I come to the forums for.  That's my inspiration.  Half-baked is good BTW -- it means I can take it and make it my own with a little effort.

Since there is so little published support for the new game, I kinda wish the website articles were more polished.  That's the difference between inspiration and support material I think.  Polished as in ready-to-use, outta the box with only a little tinkering on my part.

This article is a step closer in that regard, while the Unearthed Arcana articles are a step the other way.  Both are good but for different reasons.

= = =

I like the idea of ballistic damage for modern firearms.  Looking forward to more articles in this same vein.

I'd like to request an actual PDF download for the article (I'm using CutePDF to make a pdf but the text looks funny in places).

I really like the D20 modern article. The wrtier explicitly stated there is more to come in future articles which will flesh out the world, so not too worried it not being "polished" enough.

I would really like the idea of using the 5E engine to make a new D20 modern RPG. What all would you need for that?

- Base classes based on stats (Strong/Fast/Smart etc.)

- Some way to do the advanced and prestige classes (can this be handled with archetypes?)

- Wealth System

- More feats and perhaps a few new skills

- Minor tweaks to weapons and armor, as in the above article

Anything else?

The true problem is the balance of power, fighter vs gunslingers, and magic vs gunpowder.

We need playtesting with different types of campaings.

A campapings could be about a gnome + gnome rebelion againts the giants and dragons, where the PCs are little humanoids who have discovered the secret to craft firearms. A second campaing would be the opposite, where the PCs can´t use firearms (maybe their civilitation hasn´t discovered yet, or it is forbidden by religion and noble houses) but they are attacked by an faction who use them for example scro (orc-like race from Spelljamers) invaders or a steampunk goblin civilitation who is using gunpowder for a racial genocide to take revenge againts higher races (gnolls, bugbears, lizardfolk, goliaths..). I could bet we will see some player or DM trying create some magic or power againt firearms, for example a psionic power to create ectoplasm to block enemy canons.

* Let´s imagine there is a official D&D skirminish miniature game. One of the warbands is a group of warmage squads (from 3.5 complete arcane, a sorcerer variant with armour), and the other band is a group of musketeers/gunslinger. How to get the right balance of power?

* Has anybody seen the "devil hunter" character from the comingsoon videogame "Lost Ark Online"?

* We need a playtesting to know the true challenge rating or XPs value when enemies are using magic items or another extra help like a monster pet, or squires who reload the firearms or the crossbows.
