So, there's been a lot of talk with various places about the Sorcerer being redundant in the face of the Wizard. With only a few exceptions like Daylight, Earthquake, and a few other druidic elemental attacks, the Sorcerer spell list is just a truncated Wizard spell list. Metamagics can slide into being a subclass feature of wizard (the legendary Generalist subclass!). Dragon and Wild Magic fit pretty well into Warlock with little struggle. A friend of mine did just that.
So, I thought to myself. Lets say that we use her houserules. I'd like a fourth Arcane class to fill out the roster. But what? Psionics? My group is happy with the Great Old One warlock. Artificer? No one's come forward as being really interested in them.
Then, I flashed back to the playtest. Well, people's discussions of the playtest, and how the sorcerer was more like an arcane gish than a dedicated caster. I remember the Swordspell class in 4e, and the PF Magus class. A sword-mage would be a fun class, and I imagine that it could end up different enough from Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster to stand on its own. Well, I'd like to at least try.
Thus, this thread. What would you all consider to be a key aspect of having an entire class devoted to being an arcane gish? What sword-mage traits would you like to see built into the class? What skills? Abilities? How do you envision the arcane swordsman working out?
I'd love to hear your ideas about what's central to this class. |

Secondly, I'd suggest a gish has to at least get 2 attacks per round (in the current edition, this seems pretty decent.) Also, I'd suggest at least 6th level spells, but 7th feels a little better to me, and 8th would be pretty awesome.
As far as swordmage traits, I'd love to get Dimensional Vortex as a reaction every turn, but that's probably overpowered... Maybe once a short rest. Swordbond of some flavor seems fitting, Also, using it as an arcane focus would be the bees knees.
If you really want to emulate the 4e Swordmage, you could make different Aegis Subclasses. Shielding could get a survival boost and make mini shields on allies. Assault could get an attack as a bonus action, or an ability similar to action surge on the fighter's list.
Just spitballing here.
Really though, I think they've done a pretty decent job of making all the classes feel different mechanically, for the most part anyways. See if you can't add a subclass to an existing class and make something more to your liking before bringing in a whole new (untested/homebrewed) class. |
