DM number 2 is going AFK in January so tomorrow I will be breaking my Spore addiction and World of Tanks grind and getting behind the DM screeen again for the 1st time in a few eweeks due to things like Christmas and RL interfering in our gaming. The group is currently on holiday over here so we can play every 2nd day if we want to. Maybe even every day.

Anyway I am planning on running the 2E boxed set adventure The Night Below adapted for 5E. Being Greyahwk I indicated that alignment restrictions wold be used along with Greyhawk Races and Classes which means most of them wold be allowed.

Races. Any PHB race ask 1st about Dragonborn though, good luck if you want to be a Drow but it is allowed.

Classes. Any (including monk)

According to the DMG one can put restrictions back on the races and classes so I went with alignment restricitons being Grehawk. I did give tjhe PCs the choice of AD&D or 3.5 alignment restrictions basically limited or strict restrictions. They chose 3.5 restricitons.

When I run a setting I to set the tone of that setting I more or less try to have that worlds flavor as such baked int. Greyhawk was an AD&D setting along with the 3.5 default. The1983 GH boxed set will be used along with the Darlene maps. Hence alignment restricitons wiill apply. Had they chose AD&D ones they would have has less choices (Druids N only, Rnagers good only). Its an AD&D setting with an AD&D adventure so the restrictions help define the setting and because the NPCs are using AD&D alignment rules as well.

Alignments

Barbarians . Any non lawful

Bards. Any non lawful

Clerics. 1 step rule.

Druids: Any neutral

Fighter: any

Monk: any Lawful

Paladins LG only, anti Paladins CE (NPC only)

Ranger: Any

Rogue: Any (assassins evil maybe or at least non good)

Sorcerer Any

Warlock: Any

Wizard: Any

Feats: Yes

Multiclassing: Yes

Pantheon: Greyhawk page 195 PHB

Optional DMG rules being used: Flanking.

Starting Level 2.

I also asked them did they want the long and short rest times adjusted and by how much (5 minutes to 8 hour short rests) and the PCs said no. I might let one of the PCs run 2 characters as well as The Night Below is designed for 8 PCs but i will tweak some of the size of the encounters as 11 Orcsfor level 2 or 3 PCs iis probably going to be a bit rough.

Anyway for those of you who remember this adventure and forum users in general feel free to chip in for some ideas. The adventure is a bit railroady along the Lost Mones of Phandelver levels of railroading as opposed to Hoard of the Dragon Queen levels. Some of the monsters are missing from the MM as well such as Derro but I can add hoc them in.

As a current player in this at the local shop (we're running it as 1e): 1) come up with some better intro than what's given. I found it contrived & stupid that a band of complete strangers (us PCs) to the area is tasked with all this as opposed to us having been locals. 2) Up top on the surface world, don't present it as railroady. There's plenty to do & plenty of reasons/factions to do it for. Make it organic, not just "moving on to area 4...." 3) down below: yeah, it is a bit railroady. But that's because there's not alot of routres. So you kinda gotta deal with things in order.... (my knowledge of this adventure ends right before "the glass pool" we pick up in that chapter in a few weeks). ~~~~~~ oh, & if you post anything about your sessions? Please don't regail us with how xyz is broken etc. We just want to hear the stories/be entertained by how some other group did this one.

Interesting that your players went with less alignment restrictions. I wonder if they would have ditched them had you let them.

For all the things I find wonky in Zard's posts, I love our shared disdain for Monks. /hug
