| #1ShadeRavenAug 16, 2014 6:13:45 | I thought about adding some exposition to this that relates the story of the campaign, but as Rhenny enjoys doing that, I will leave that in his capable hands.
So what I am going to do is give some DM side insights and data. I'll use the SPOILER tag to prevent any unwanted information for those not wanting to know about this hardback adventure ahead of time.
Session #1: Thursday, August 14th, 2014. 8pm to 11pm Eastern USA Time Zone. Interface: Over the Internet through Fantasy Grounds. Special Note: Characters were all rolled up, using 4d6 drop lowest, with stats being determined in order. So, first roll goes to STR, second to CON, etc. Everyone then decided what they were playing thereafter.
First hour was dedicated to building the backdrop for all the characters and really engaging them with the world of Abeir-Toril (Forgotten Realms). I have some relatively new-to-RP players in this campaign, so the extra detail and character notes encourages their investment and education of Faerun (which is something I need to).
Background With 5 very different backgrounds, it was a fun challenge to find ties that I thought would work for the group. There was a need to find reasons to have them end up in the southern section of the Sword Coast - mainly, in the vicinity of Greenest.
For the halfling (Mily) who was escaping the retribution of a duke of Amn, north was her destination of choice to avoid the eyes out of the Duchy of Tastus (a small, but influential province). In her wanderlust, she eventually comes across an enigma to her: someone who simply wants to be left alone and doesn't want to talk or have any interaction. Determination and affability win out in the end. Mily earns both the friendship and trust of Grim Greycastle.
Grim's story still mostly cloaked in mystery, even to the effervescent Mily. Little is known of his history except that it has molded him into a very reclusive, untrusting soul. His isolationism was eventually broken by the befriending of Mily, but whatever it is he searches for continues. His only true interest seems to be in collecting stories of cult worship from small communities and folklore. Something recently piqued his interest because his attention suddenly fell fully on Greenest. With Mily in tow, they've headed there with an air of expectation.
Myles and Strix, on the surface at least, seem to be an unlikely pair, but they are fast friends who've been inseparable for years now. Myles is a human raised by elves after he was taken in by the fair folk when most of his village and all of his family were slain by orc raiders. Myles adopted many elven mannerisms, but there's a dark hatred for the humanoids responsible for his family's deaths that bubbles to the surface now and then which even the priests of Sylvanus could not dissipate in his acolyte training.
Perhaps the intensity of his passionate loathing of orcs is what attracted Strix to Myles originally, but what the studious human eventually came to appreciate most in the young cleric was Myles' elven-taught willingness to take the world for what it is. This is important to Strix as his interests are not mainstream. In fact, most find his fascination with the undying to be loathsome. For Strix, though, it's just an intellectual pursuit that he find challenging and intriguing, not nefarious. Myles willingness to accept Strix's views for what they are has allowed their friendship to remain strong over the years. It's also what allowed Myles to have complete trust and willingness to follow Strix to a town called Greenest when the young mage suddenly showed late one evening, battered and bloodied but not willing to talk about what happened to his closest (perhaps only) friend only to say they must go to Greenest.
Finally, there is the dwarf Brevick. Almost nothing is known of the silent warrior. He does not speak, has unusual markings on his face, and interacts little except to do what must be done. In fact, it was only recently discovered that he could talk at all for he does not know the Common tongue and none of the other four in the party can speak dwarvish.
How they've come to be together is more by happenstance than planning. Greenest has proven to be a quiet community with few answers for the two who came there looking for resolution to whatever drew them there. Two followed friends and curiosity to the village. One seems to have nowhere else to go or be. All came to be under the employment of the Nashkel Trade Guild as merchant guards as they try to afford their new wandering lifestyle.
And so ten days have passed. A bond is starting to develop between the five (though who can tell with Brevick) as they've been the only constant guard working the road between Nashkel and Iriabor. But tension is building and boredom is setting in (especially in Mily's case). |
