I am planning on starting up a new Fifth Edition campaign with my kids, using the Starter Set and included adventure, which should arrive any day now.  I am a huge Greyhawk fan, but understand that the official setting for 5E will be Forgotten Realms, and that they will most likely be releasing the FR campaign setting for 5E first.  So, should I go thru the trouble of converting the starter adventure to Greyhawk, knowing that it will be a while (or possibly never) until any 5E Greyhawk setting is released?  Or should I just take the path of least resistance and run the new campaign in the Realms?  Also, if I go with Greyhawk, any recommendations on where I should locate the players/adventure?

I would do the same as MonsterEnvy. If you have your Greyhawk books, you can use the fluff there to describe the setting and make stuff up for the things that you don't have 5e rules for yet.

Personally, when I get my hands on the starter set I'm going to mod the guts out of the adventure to match my setting. It's all deep background anyways.

90% chance that only you care about the setting.

Personally, if I'm running for the kids, I'm running FOR the kids - my personal peccadilloes take a backseat to their fun.

So if it's Forgotten Realms and someone wants to play a warforged, well damnit, there's warforged now.

Yeah I believe you could use the wildcoast as a stand in for the sword coast and have Greyhawk kind of sitting in the same position as Waterdeep.

I though have not seen the actual starter set and I'm only going on what I've heard on these boards.

I agree with Bawylie that the kids probably don't care so the extra work is for your benefit so if it's worth it for you then do it.   If Greyhawk inspires you then when you get out of store bought adventures and get into writing your own you will be better off.   The only campaign setting I've ever ran a campaign in was Greyhawk and that was before my build my own phase began so I have some nostalgic attachment to it.

I see nothing wrong with Forgotten Realms though.  For brand new people, I'd probably avoid the more exotic settings and bring those in once they've got their feet wet with basic fantasy.

Running a campaign setting that you're familiar with always seems like a little less work than trying to manage one that you're not as invested in. I'd argue that would be the path of least resistance!

If you know Grayhawk in and out, I can't imagine it'd be a ton of work to convert the Starter adventure. I bet you could mostly do it on the fly, depending on your playstyle...
