| #1dmgorgonNov 11, 2014 13:00:57 | Anyone having issues creating a particular character concept with 5e?
I've seen a few posts on other forums ranting about this issue, but I generally don't agree with them since those complaints are mostly mechanical / edition specific in nature.
I did have one player who complained about not being able to make a semi-historical Viking Berserker because he was forced to take a feat or multi-class just to wear a basic suit of chainmail. Apparently, all barbs are encouraged to be he-man types.

1: Sneaky defender. Turns invisible and redirects attacks from enemies upon himself. PC's don't even know who's guarding them.
2: 4e Shaman. I can kinda-sorta do this with find familar, but it's not enough. |

In 5E he'd be required to MC a level of monk to get d4 damage (but not 2 levels or he becomes magic) or be stuck not rolling damage until he could eventually pick up the poorly named Tavern Brawler. Variant human could do okay picking up Tavern Brawler at level 1.
Even though you could do it in 5E, the lack of feat support and way unarmed strike works would leave him pretty far behind just giving up and going magical ki monk. |

| #10sleypyNov 11, 2014 17:34:16 | I can't make my inspirational leader that stood in the frontlines hide behind his giant shield and directed people with his spear. I techincally can still make the character, but the prospect of playing a bard spell caster kills any joy I could every experience. |
| #42setiNov 12, 2014 13:08:40 | I used to be mad about the exclusion of the 4e Warlord from 5e. I thought it was a slap in the face to 4e fans.
Now I realize that you can just reflavor the sh*t out of a cleric with the war domain (maybe with a few levels in Bard), and play a Warlord. Just stop thinking of inspiration, healing, and such as 'magic' at your table and when you imagine your 'Warlord' PC.
I still think 5e is missing Shaman, psionic, and more Sorcerer bloodline mechanics, however. Hopefully we'll get that (and more) in the next few years. |

| #47THEMNGMNTNov 13, 2014 21:45:53 | This was mentioned by somewhere else in another thread, but factions can be used to recreate many aspects of prestige classes. In fact, from a pure story standpoint, representing an affiliation with a group (which is what many PrCs did) is better expressed outside of character class. |

| #49UchawiNov 14, 2014 3:21:21 | If we are not talking about what any player/class can do in reference to roleplaying or picking skills, equipment, etc. then all that is left is the mechanical differences between editions. And with the stated 5E is different enough that alot of class concepts are not covered, unless you are willing to overlook the mechanical differences. |
| #50GuntharNov 14, 2014 7:58:57 | We can't make a Swordmage at all: A lightly-armored, tough-as-nails, elite swordsman who uses his intellect in battle and magic is used for shielding and redirecting attacks from his allies. |

| #53GuntharNov 14, 2014 8:24:15 | The Eldritch Knight is in no way a Swordmage. It's a Fighter/Wizard Kludge that doesn't act or work anywhere near the same way. Heck, it relies on strength (or Dex, but that creates other issues) instead of Intelligence for its swordsmanship alone, not the study of opponents, physics and anatomy.
Put another way:The Swordmage is the guy who jumps in to the fray or danger not because he's foolhardy but because he not only can take a hit but he sees a way out others would miss. Think about a fire rescue ranger. The Eldritch Knight stands at the edge and tries to contain the danger, hoping anyone inside can escape while the Swordmage dives in to the danger and pulls the those inside to safety.
The Blade Warlock also fails. |
| #54AaronOfBarbariaNov 14, 2014 8:25:53 | Yes, if you are going to insist that it's not a swordmage unless it does exactly the one thing that you want, which appears to be use Intelligence for melee weapon attacks (in which case I suggest using shocking grasp and your imagination in concert) then everything is going to "fail" your assessment.
If, however, you were open-minded and willing to compromise at all you would see numerous swordmage (which, by the way, is a fighter/wizard "kludge" by design) options in 5e. |
| #55ChrisCarlsonNov 14, 2014 8:30:43 | Well, at least we're starting to get why Gunthar was so quick to take offense to that "passive-aggressive" almost-attack on 4e in the other thread... |

| #63TimboramaNov 14, 2014 10:47:31 | Having a blade do slashing vs. fire damage makes 0 difference until it needs to. So...Fluff away...? Either as a Paladin or EK. Or with a magic weapon. Personally I see things like Burning Hands as a nice substitute to Burning Blade, despite Swordmages probably being my favorite Defender-types from 4E. But maybe that's just me? (or maybe just not LaWolf or Gunthar)
(also, +1 to CC, I kinda thought the same thing) |
