Chris talks about his job as D&D's Story Manager in this video. (Thanks to HobbitFan for posting the link over at EN World.)

In short, it's Chris' job to "connect the dots".

Right at the end, the guy asks him if there will be any campaign setting books coming out. Chris' response is pretty intriguing.

To summarize:

  • He can't talk about products that haven't been announced yet
  • They value all of their worlds, as each one has "tons of fans"
  • They are focusing on specific areas within settings to detail and "codify" via their story bibles
  • Their goal is to "challenge people's expectations" re: sourcebooks
  • They're "not interested in releasing books for the sake of releasing books anymore"
  • They want book releases to be events that will "surprise and delight people"; they also want to put out books that people will actually use rather than books that will just get put on a shelf to "stay there and slowly rot"
  • "One of our creative challenges is to package [setting] material - reintroduce facts and important details about our worlds - in a way that we know that DMs and players are going to use, that's going to excite them, that's actually going to surprise them. We may get that content out, but I'm not going to guarantee it's going to be a book. I'm not going to guarantee that it's going to be anything that you've seen before. But it will be something."

This is pretty exciting stuff, I'm very intrigued by this and the prospect of giving D&D something new.

I love listening to Chris Perkins.  I really think he is the face/voice of D&D now, and that's a good thing!

I want his DM guide articles to start up again.  I found invauluable examples and suggestions in there.  He is the DM that I would want/and want to become.

I'm not convinced that challenging everyones expectations is such a good thing.  It sounds like they only want to release adventures.   We will be stuck buying adventures to extract all the bits of lore and information we need to run a FR 5e campaign setting.    It's too bad because I try to stay clear of published adventures.  All I really want is a "Where the realms are now" primer before I even consider running a 5e FR campaign.
