I've not had much chance to play with the new edition yet, but my immediate reaction to the layout is... a bit negative. I found that the 4e handbooks presented the most pertinent information to creating a character of that class right on a single page which was a godsend when you're flicking back and forth. Similarly, it feels the same way with the Race layout.
Now it seems that there's just a wall of fluff not only before you get to the meat of class features, but also a load of it in the spaces between more mechanical bits of information.
Am I the only person finding this a bad change overall? |

The classes however are rougly in the same order as presented on their class chart, i.e. the level 1 abilities are listed, then the level 2 abilities, and so on and so forth.
4e handed out al your features and such at level 1, and then gave each class a list of powers they could choose from in order of lowest level powers to highest level powers. With the classes using a similar progression and format this lead to a very compact entry regarding the core features of the class, followed up by power uptions.
With the core features scattered over the class progression itmakes for a more hectic class entry.
It's not so much that the format of the presentation has changed, more the format of the things being presented has changed. |

Many people didn't like 4E presentation and missed the fluff. I already know my fluff, so I rather like the clean, "these are the rules you are looking for" presentation of the 4E books. Embedding rules in a paragraph of fluff is not to my liking, nor is flipping around a huge spell compendium in the back of the book in order to pick my spells. I don't see any viable solution for the spells gripe, though.
I do not miss the sterile, blinding white pages of the 4E books, though. Ugh. My eyes are relieved to once more have nice, muted pages. |
