DnD is doing more comics, which is great, but will it matter?  I don't want to read some elseworlds story, I want to read stories that matter!  Will the new comics have a direct effect on the Forgotten Realms?  Are the new comics canon?

Who cares if the stories are cannon? Why do you want the works (comics, novels, even splat books) of others to be more valid than the stories you & your group tell? At the most you should be concerned: is the art good? Is the story good?

While IDW is better than Marvel or DC regarding continuity (both have completely given up on it), I doubt they'll try to make it canon.  There's just too many writers who would all have to get together just to keep everything straight.  Trying to make it canon would only lead to retcons of one media or the other.

The very best D&D comic being done right now is "Rat Queens."  Go buy many, many copies.

I'm just curious about why a 'Legends Of' series would tack on the 'Tyranny of Dragons' title.  What's the connection?

So, according to some Tweets from Mearls and Jim Zub:

A) The story is tied to Tyranny of Dragons, and involves the Dragon Cult

B) Jim Zub answered a question concerning how Minsc and Boo might be alive outside their original Era, by saying "All will be Revealed..."

So it does look like not only are Minsc and Boo still alive, but they will somehow involved with the Tyranny of Dragons story.  At least, that's how I take it.

Really not sure how I feel about that.  I guess as long as the story is done well, and not rolling in Cliche's, it'd be nice to have more of Minsc and Boo.  That said, it also kind of feels like a marketing gimmick to drum up support, as the two are some of the most remembered and favorite characters of the Baldur's Gate series.  I also feel like I would have preferred the comics to be about their adventures prior, during and after the Baldur's Gate events.  Time Traveling to the future, whatever method used, can be very tricky to pull off without coming off as silly, IMO.

Won't stop me from checking them out though, LOL.  So I guess they're already successful, at least for the first Comic's release, anyways.

I am going to go out on a limb and guess that Minsc and Boo are involved through some flashbacks to when they were alive.   I don't think they will be transported to the present FR.  Although, Resurrection or True Resurrection is an idea...

I have never acknowledged the Time of Troubles, Spellplague, Age of Mortals, Wars, Prism Pentad, The Grand Conjunction, Inhuman Wars II, or The Faction War.

I like to grow the setting myself, not busybody adventure and novel writers mutilating the setting.

That was another great aspect of Al-Qadim, no metaplot meddling.
