Confused about Lay on Hands

Greetings all

 

I have been reading through the PHB, and thus far, I'm loving it!  I do however have a question on the Paladin.  the Lay on Hands (page 84) skill is confusing to me...it talks about

 

"...as an action, you can touch a creature and draw power from the pool to restore a number of hit points to that creature, up to the maximum amount in your pool."

 

Now, this is why I am confused...what pool are they speaking of?  How do I know I have points in my 'Pool'?  Any help here is MUCH appreciated.

First paragraph of Lay on Hands, page 84.  Immediately above the part you quoted.

 

"With that pool, you can restore a total number of hit points equal to your paladin level x 5."
