D&D 5e and new players

I agreed with my local store to organize an open gaming event with D&D 5e. I organized a similar event with D&D 4e in 2008, and it established one group playing 4e up to the present day.

I live in Brno in the Czech republic (next to Germany). Not many players come to such an event. Six players came to the 4E event, and incidentally six players came to 5E event as well, though four other players said they would come in September. Dozens of players play Magic in the store every week.

Till now, I've played 5e mostly via Fantasy Grounds with our regular group of three to five players, and me as a DM. We've played together from 4E era, and then switched to 5E when the rules were published last year. So, we are experienced players.

Back to the event. I thought there would come players experienced at least with some edition of D&D, like they've come on the 4E event. I was surprised two of those six players have never played any RPG, and four of them had experience with some edition of D&D, but never played any 5e game, and none of them have read the 5e rules till then. So, total newbies. I have to admit I was worried a little bit.

But it was great, D&D 5E rocks! We played LMoP, everything was smooth, game was flowing very naturally, and after few tens of minutes nobody would assume those players were new to the game. They adopted the rules very quickly. I would say 5E rules are much more new-player-friendly than 4E rules. But most important, it was fun, and very enjoyable! They all enjoyed every minute of the game. There trully is the D&D magic around the table, after the session we were like friends, and agreed on the next game session next Wednesday.

Thank you, WotC, for such a great game like D&D 5e trully is!

Sounds awesome, and it’s great that you’re getting new folks into the hobby and/or D&D. 5e really is quite great.

From time to time I think about trying to organize some sessions at my local gaming store, but I always wuss out.

I took over as DM for the HotDQ / Tiamat group that our FLGS is using as an "intro to D&D" effort.  We welcome / invite new people in to check us out for an evening.  Some of them even come back !

5e works well for returning players, it's familiar enough in feel to fans of any prior edition.

When I was looking for a group to DM I directly said that no prior knowledge is needed, though I asked everyone to at least skim through the basic rules and then try to learn while playing. Working perfectly. I think only the DM really needs to know any rules anyway, because players can just say what they want to do regardless of knowing the rules. Though it always means more DM work.

Give yourself a pat on the back, while you're at it.

5e is definitely more accessible to new players than previous editions, but it still takes a good DM to make any game run smoothly.

In fact, two more players want to join next Wednesday, and four more from September. We will need at least one more DM.
