D&D Attack Wing and Miniature Line

I'm fairly upset by the strategy that WotC and Wiz Kids has taken regarding the D&D Attack Wing game. I'm sure there is a section of the market that will exclusively play DDAW and not play D&D, but I would think that the majority of the market is playing both.

When the new release of minis came out, I purchased a brick and now own all models. With the release of DDAW, which was after the minis line, I couldn't use any of those minis for DDAW. You have to have the supporting materials to be able to use them. This is completely crazy! I don't need two Green Dragons. Now I understand that the D&D minis are blind boxes, but this tactic still seems predatory.

Their latest product announcement is that the Bahaumut figure will be available for DDAW in APRIL!!! I just paid $60 for the D&D version at my hobby store and I won't be able to use it in DDAW. If I want to play Bahaumut in DDAW, I have to pay another $80 for a new figure!!!!   WTF? Now I know that this is WizKids and not WotC, but surely they had some influence over the products and release times, etc..

I think they have really handled this poorly and I feel like they are trying to take advantage of my desire to play both games and I think it's underhganded to make me pay double for the same product by with holding a cheap portion that would make it cost effective for their customers to make the most of their purchases.

I'm going to give them my money for sure, I just want them to respect my loyalty as a customer and value my purchase.

I think they should make DDAW models unique. Then I would buy both and get value for my purchase. Otherwise, make the materials available to use my D&D models as DDAW figures for a reduced amount.

You are looking at this all wrong - imagine not the customer like yourself that wants both minis for use with their D&D playing and minis for Attack Wing, but rather the customers that play miniature games and don't play D&D, and the customers that play D&D (and actually use minis, but haven't already declared their collection sufficiently complete) but don't play miniatures games.

My experience is that the people which are exclusive to one type of game or the other are much more numerous relative to those that are interested in both - and beyond that, miniatures aren't usually really big sellers outside of games that rely entirely on having dozens of them per player involved, so a company saving a considerable amount of money by reusing a mold whenever they can is not "predatory" so much as intelligent.

Sounds like if you bought the DDAW models, you'd get the AW stuff and be able to use them for D&D, but not the other way around.

Though apart from buying the base DDAW game, you could get the stats from other players.

SORRYbaby interfering...`two frost giants from Tyranny of dragons.  Despite randomness, you are better off buying some boosters and then second market minis instead of attack wing if you want minis to play DnD with.

There's a few things that you need to understand when dealing with WizKids. 1) They'll re-use as many sculpts as they can. Including from one set going into another. 2) They really don't give two s****s if you don't like how they operate. Or what your opinions are. So complain & vent if you want, but realize t hat it will NOT influence them.

I play both D&D and D&D Attack Wing. I don't mind paying for both the lines. I bought both the Icons Bahamut and Tiamat and I have every intention of buying the D&D Attack Wing versions.

The D&D Attack Wing expansion packs comes with a host of additional game peices that have truly expanded my playing experience- it has been fun.  To me, it's worth the price point for the expansion packs even though they are reusing the sculpts.

I think it's a bit unrealistic to demand that Wizkids develops entirely new miniatures for the D&D Attack Wing game. The costs alone to redo the sculpts for the exact same mini would be great. At the tournaments that I've played at less than 5% of them actually play D&D. They are board game enthusiasts that play Star Trek and X-Wing as well.

I mean- I bought a case of Tyranny of Dragons and I have a boat load of extra green, bronze, copper dragons and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.  It's fun to give them away to those who don't have them or can't afford them.  Buying duplicate D&D Attack Wing miniature will not keep me up at night.  I'm just glad that there is a Attack Wing game for D&D AND THAT IS COOL!

In my opinion, it would feel more "predatory" if they made sculpts for just one game and made me buy them just to own the sculpt. I am glad they offered both. I bought the figures I wanted from the D&D miniatures set, then bought a set of the hobgoblins from Attack Wing just to get a nice number. I don't play DDAW and couldn't care less about the cards etc that came with the hobgoblins.

I dion't think anyone is complaining about the re-using of sculptures. I think the complaint is that if you want to play D&D and attack wing you literally have to buy the exact same figures twice, because there is no option to just buy the rule cards (or download them). This is more ridiculous because apparently even if you know you want the figures for attack wing, the attack wing versions of the figures is released later than the D&D mini version, so to avoid buying them twice you might just have to put your campaign on hold for a few months while you wait for the attack wing versions to release.

It's just poorly done all around.

Seems more like 'I don't want to use photocopied stat cards precisely because I bought a brick of random figures! When I have that money to throw around, I deserve more for what I spend (for some reason...?)'

I can see how buying the normal figs and then buying Attack Wing is anoying, but the problem isn't Wizards (or Wizkids) fault.  It has to do with the order you bought your stuff.  If Attack wing didn't use the same figs you would be in the sam situation.  You would have to buy both.  But since they are the same you could concievably not have to buy the D&D Icons minis and just buy the Attack Wing Stuff.

I will grant that Attack Wing Minis are more expensive, but you get a lot more stuff with them.  If you want to play Attack Wing you ar going to need that stuff.  If you are not going to play attack wing then no one says you should buy the Attack Wing stuff.

Let's break things down into three groups of people

People who only play D&D: By the Icons minis (buy them on ebay you don't like that they are collectable)

People who only play Attack Wing: Buy the Attack Wing stuff, it is priced almost exaclty the same as X-wing and Star Trek Attack Wing

People who want to play both:  Here you do get a price break for only buy the Attack Wing figs.

I don't see how anyone loses out.  (Except the guy who wanted to play  both, but has already bought all the Icons stuff)

I would also like to point out that you can Buy just the basses and pegs seperatly.  This isn't all you need to use an Icons Mini in attack wing, but it everything else is either carboard or a card.  These things could be easily proxied with photo copies for casual play.
