So today is July 3rd, the release of D&D Basic free pdf on Wizards website...right? Why is it so hard to find the download? Can somone post the link so I can check it out? Thanks.

It is currently difficult to find the download because it is not there yet - WotC offices have been open for like 30 minutes at the most (if they aren't actually open in roughly 30 minutes, that is) and the link will appear once the designated employee finishes setting it up, which likely isn't something they are able to have be their "I just walked into the office" activity because of things like morning meetings and other office-y stuff.

You would have thought such an important release would have been done at midnight, and presetup to make pushing to their website very easy.

The meetings are probably to make sure they have all their ducks in a row. They want this to go off well. Murphy is a tricky son of a gun. They had the PDF finalized yesterday.
