I was over on RPGnow.com and saw that the 1E core books were 1st (DMG), 6th (MM) and 9th (PHB) on the best sellers list. Now I know a few of the AD&D/OD&D reprints sold out but I always assumed it was mostly grognards buying it. I was wondering though has anyone here who has never played an edition of D&D older than 3.0 been buying PDFs of TSR era D&D for use with 5E?

They're sold out? I better buy the copies at my friendly local gaming store then.  It's just a bit expensive, so I've been spacing them out.

Only bought the 1e AD&D core 3 + UA. But they have the 2e reprints and 3.5e reprints there as well, as well as some of the classic 1e adventure series.

Still have my originals from back in the day, so I guess I count as a grognard. That being said, I know another member of my gaming group who began with 4e, picked up the PHB.

Encyclopedia Magica. It catalogues all magic items ever created in any dragon magazine, supplement, box set, you name it for TSR era AD&D, introduces a few new magic items of its own, and provides randomization tables as well. I got volumes 1,2, and 3 from a friend, and have ordered volume 4. The items basically all transition with little to no effort. When they reference a spell or a magic item that already has rules in 5th we use those rules otherwise most effects are easily transitioned to fifth ed. For instance an artifurnace from spelljammer can basically be wholesale copied from the encyclopedia magica and still work properly in a 5e game. I'm also using the encyclopedia magica to determine the magic item economy (how much stuff costs). It's a little arbitrary, but it works.

I started with 4e but I bought the AD&D 1e 3 main books (reprint) and PDFs. I actually liked, however I didn’t play them because of the groups’ choice and because of so many miscellaneous rules. That’s life. Still was worthy because he taught me many things. I also have 3.X pdfs and borrowed books from quite some time, so I know about them already. I choose to buy 1e because of all the “Politically correct” changes 2e made; I think that 1e is truer to the “tone” of the original game.

However, I cannot help but remind of the other games. Final Fantasy-based system was the first one I learned, but 4e is still to today the game I most DM-ed in my life. Actually when I think about it I like quite a bunch but they made some mistakes (many after some time of publication) that really hurt the playability. Basically updates are gods, half of the monsters are useless, math needs fix and combat is too long (although I think I can fix that for my table). Sad, isn’t!?

13th Age seems to be very good but I'm still shy to leave D&D. Not so many options compared to past D&D editions, but it’s a small project compared to D&D, so let’s give it a shot. Some things which I prefer old-school were chosen to be new-age-style, but that’s a minor.

Edit:

Well, I think I will share this here with you. My relation with 5e is kind of a love-and-hate one. Formerly I was going to skip this edition and go to past editions of D&D. I thought they were better to my taste. And in some ways, they are. But in others… I’m kinda of tired from 3.X Brokenness, 4e different-but-still-brokenness of the math, AD&D 1e with its odd miscellaneous rules and general lack of options… 13th Age is great! But, I still think it’s not quite like D&D, so I’m thinking now to go back to D&D 5e. But I would need to talk to people about it. And save money. Lots of money.

Castles and Crusades is one of the best 3rd party D&D products of 3e, and probably my favorite OSR game. It pretty much managed to take old school D&D and the unified mechanics of 3e and blend it all together in a simple, rules-light product.

Hum… You talk about this system a lot; I’ll check up on that. Thanks!

But yes, talking about the opening post, I did start with 4e but bough 1e products with time. Actually between 2013-today I’m learning some systems besides D&D 5e and D&D 4e. Too bad my gaming table was recently dismantled, and that will take a time to reform.
