| #1Nivek_LoneshadowJul 13, 2014 21:06:33 | Maybe it's still too soon to hope for this but i really liked the Modern Series. Would anyone else purchase a product of this nature?
I'm expecting someone to say 3e related stuff is easy to translate and I can do it myself. You may have a point but much as I liked the idea of modern adventures I'd really like to see some new ideas going into it instead of how a lot of the specials were simply a way to boost a skill. I think the system could benefit from a consolidation and reboot of new ideas rather than a simple attempt to translate.
Thoughts? |
| #2MechaPilotJul 13, 2014 21:34:09 | I would definitely like to see Modern and Future genre-books for 5e, and I would definitely purchase them. |
| #3Cyber-DaveJul 13, 2014 21:58:46 | I loved d20 Modern, and I hated 3e D&D. Seeing as I really like D&D 5th, I see no reason why I wouldn't. |
| #4aleatoricJul 13, 2014 22:41:44 | I really hope this is one of the first products they produce after 5e is fully released. |
| #5Luis_CarlosJul 13, 2014 23:40:25 | WotC wants a new d20 Modern but it needs a special playtesting for a different XPs rewards system. A monster like a dinosaur could be a great menace for a character from d20 Past but free XPs for a space marine PC from d20 Future. A fomorian giant could be killed with only a shoot from a rocket launcer or bazooka, or a simple enemy nPC with firearms would be a nightmare for players.
If there is plans about a d20 Superheroes it will be a challenge for game designers, for the balance of power martial artists vs gunslingers. What if for a d20 Past campaing the DM add aliens with high-tech from d20 Future?
In a d20 Modern adventure a simple truck could be used to hit a horde of zombies.
My suggestion is enemies with "extra helps" like firearms ought to be like added monster templates, with extra XPs rewards.
Example 1: the classic goblin, only shield and sword.
Example 2: a goblin archer with poisonous arrows from the top of a tree..
Should the two examples be the same XPs value? I don´t think it.
Maybe we need to playtesting the modules about firearms and arcanepunk technology.

| #6RoninJTJul 14, 2014 0:54:50 | I don't see it happening but the market is past due for a good d20 update to other genres. Modern and superheroes being prime among them.Sadly, with WOTC having to throw so much of their time and energy into competing with Pathfinder now it is pretty doubtful they have the available resources to make one. A shame really. I always loved the setting for d20 modern (and it's era/theme-based supplements) but the system was fairly lacking by comparison to D&D. |
| #7RustedKitsuneJul 14, 2014 4:50:28 | well, we can easily modify 5E to be d20 Modern. Step one, we remove all the classes and just give out a standard HD and let people choose their proficiencies. Step two, we add in "class features" as a set of abilities you can choose from at certain levels. For example, Expert: Choose two non-weapon proficiencies; you double your proficiency bonus for all checks with those proficiencies.
5E feels like an extremely versatile system to me. It really does. |
| #8ChrisTheSJul 14, 2014 7:01:16 | I mentioned this before, but the Amethyst setting will be getting a 5e version probably within a few months of the DMG being released (I don't know about Ultramodern or NeuroSpasta), so there'll be third-party options even if there aren't core ones. |
| #9Luis_CarlosJul 14, 2014 8:20:17 | The d20 Modern is a lot of different styles of game. A module could be about a psycho-killer like the "Scream" movie saga or "Friday 13" (PCs without guns) and another it is war campaing where PCs can use the most expensive toys.
I can bet lots of players would use d20 Modern to create campaigns about their favorite videogames. Why not?
|
| #10JC999Jul 14, 2014 9:54:06 | I loved d20 modern. The action-movie feel was fantastic (my into to Action Points, which ended up in every D&D/ game I played afterwards.), and Ultramodern Firearms is still a great reference. |
| #11strider13xJul 14, 2014 10:31:59 | Hasbro already owns GI Joe and Transformers, right? Seems like a no brainer to make a d20 Modern and d20 Mecha RPG! |
| #12Luis_CarlosJul 14, 2014 12:53:37 | Hasbro has lots of IPs and can get agreemeents with other companies, it can do a remake of a old IP, for example Gamma World, to create actions toys and a cartoon serie, or to mixture Star Frontiers and Star*Drive to create a new line.
But the problem is d20 Modern has different styles of campaings, like X-Files, Green Arrow and Batman superheroes, walking dead, Tomb Raider, Mirror´s Edge, Uncharted...
A PC could be perfect for a d20 Street Fighters but bad for a d20 Call of Chutlhu or a d20 Expendables.

| #13JC999Jul 14, 2014 13:19:47 | I've always liked the idea of a Burn Notice style campaign. Hope to see some Modern adaptions of 5e eventually for stuff like that. |
| #14Nivek_LoneshadowJul 14, 2014 22:05:47 | It's nice to see there is a call for modern RPGs.
Amethyst - Interesting I lost interest in 4e and I had to look up what this setting was. I'm going to try and read further out of curiousity.
As for styles of gameplay I am seeing how it can be challenging to fit everything into a handful of books. The first run did divide eras pretty well. Maybe there could be a way to adjust the CR based off the level of tech allowed in the game. Tech and magic can be treated pretty similar as far as the DM controlling dificulty.

| #15Luis_CarlosJul 15, 2014 5:00:09 | Why a playtesting?
Do imagine this.
Campaign: The lost world.
- d20 Past: Oh, my god, a Tyranosaurus Rex. LET´S RUN AWAY!
- d20 Future: oh my god, a Tyranosaurs Rex. FANTASTIC, A NEW HUNT TROPHY FOR THE COLECTION!
Campaign: zombie apoycalype
- Civilians PCs:
- I have got a idea, I could drive a truck to hit the zombie horde.
- I suggest other thing, a bird in a cage would be the hook, and from the top of a balcony we would use hammer meteors (chaings with a stone) to break their skulls.
- soldiers PCs:
- a new horde of zombies in the main street.
- no problem, the flamethrower is ready. LET´S ROCK! |
| #16ChrisTheSJul 15, 2014 7:17:14 | You could handle the disparity between genres with a modular threat system - pick base statistics according to the threat level that you're looking for and then layer on flavor extras. To be honest, I'd prefer to see something like that in base D&D as well, because I'd rather like to be able to throw dragons at characters of any level.
(I've been spoiled by Fate, where all it takes to make a monster an appropriate threat for a party of any level is to match its peak skill rating to that of the party). |

| #18BlinkDog1Oct 03, 2014 14:58:42 | Please do a 5e revamp of Modern D20, I only ask a few things be retained.
First, keep the class system of the older version, updated of course and for thos who do not like the class system do a classless system. Obviously you couldn't mix the two, so players and DM's would have to agree on which one to use.
Second, change automatic fire and burst fire. You don't need a wisdom of 13 to burst fire, I can do it have been trained to, but I'm not that wise. Automatic fire can be aimed, like burst fire (if character has the feat) just do 3x damage, 10rds fired.
Third, Some modern types of weapons could even provide certain feats to someone using them. For example, very low recoil weapons like the AA-12 Shotgun, Kris Vector and Ultimax machine gun would give the user a burst feat even if the firer does not have the feat, the recoil from these weapons if half or more of more conventional designs. A Tracking Point rifle would have Far Shot feat.

I'm writing up a D20 modern version of my RPG Uncivil War, using the 3.5 book version. I would like it if they do publish a 5e version of the rules have it more seamless for conversion for older supplements. |
| #19Cyber-DaveOct 03, 2014 15:00:28 | I would buy it... |
| #20arnwolf666Oct 04, 2014 1:58:23 | I love Urban Arcana settings. I just use D&D rules, and make up my own for equipment. Generally pistols do 1d6 and can be duel wielded, rifles do 1d12 and need 2 hands. |
| #21SaelornOct 06, 2014 13:25:43 | The obvious question for conversion would be what to do with the advanced classes. Because d20 Modern was so heavy into multi-classing, it doesn't make much sense to translate the advanced classes as sub-classes of their respective base stat classes.
The way I see it, there are two options:
A) Advanced classes are independent classes, which have a multi-classing pre-requisite including a minimum character level. B) Replace each advanced class with a feat that covers the major aspects of that class.
What does anyone else think? |

| #24rampantOct 07, 2014 17:55:06 | HUh I thought most of the Prestige classes were made into sub-classes? |
| #25BlinkDog1Oct 07, 2014 20:17:15 | Played 5e for the first time last night and while doing so was trying to compare with D20 Modern. I found 5e to be much like 1e but using the DC system (higher AC is better) as compared to the AC system of 1st where lower was better. There would have to be some sort of class system, based on the basic classes then backgrounds and finally a race system or some sort of psudeo race system.
I like what they have done with spell casting in 5e, with casting a lower level spell in a higher slot as opposed to just assumeing that a spell cast by a higher level is automatically more powerful. And good job with the spell write ups, specifying things like how powerful a sleep spell is etc. I also appreciate that they have done their best to balence the classes, doing away with class attribute minimums and such.
But with a system like modern where people multiclass, I would think introducing an attribute minimum like 10 for a basic class would be warrented to avoid weird characters especially at high levels. I also think that it has to be considered and factored in that the rules may be used in a magic/psionic/super power less setting. Maybe some reality level tweaking rules, like raising DC levels for grittier games. |
| #26rampantOct 07, 2014 20:37:43 | Assuming you use the attribute hero classes as the basic classes then an attribute requirement is legit. |
| #27RainsDec 26, 2014 1:07:56 | Bump because I desperately want 5e Modern |
| #28masterfat78Dec 26, 2014 6:59:25 | I think 5ths core would make a good building block for a new d20 modern. Imagine a dex class with say gunslinger as one of its subclasses. I do feel that a mix of AC and DR is a better way to go than how 5th does AC. |
| #29JenksDec 26, 2014 22:42:33 | I'd dig it. You could easily turn the different talent paths into subclasses. Or you could ditch subclasses all together and reintroduce talent paths. Either way seems pretty easy to impliment in 5th. |

|
| #31Nivek_LoneshadowDec 29, 2014 15:01:51 | It's nice to see a few more people post here again. I keep thinkng we should start a comunity project and work on the conversion. However I think it can get challenging for everyone to agree on the direction for a project like that.
Personally I have givin it a lot of thought and though I agree with Masterfat78 about how cool a Fast hero with a subclass of Gunslingers sounds cool. However after really picking apart modern's design I don't think it would work as intended in 5e. Sometimes I think keeping modern very close to the original is best and other times I think a 5e version of Modern would have to look a lot like the current version. Instead of Fighter, Rogue, Monk, you would have Soldier, Rogue, Martial Artist for example. Instead of having to choose Strong or Fast you could choose Soldier with a high STR or DEX, Don't choose Fast or Dedicated for skills. Choose a class that is focused on skills. Rogue? Expert? Luminary (A class I am working on)? ect and then decide how stats influence your goal of being a skill monkey. The base classes and their talents would have to be grouped together like 5e feats and just let people choose from what talents they want versuses the need to multi class fast hero/Dedicated hero for example. 5e levels the playing field with a lot of the stuff that separated classes. ie total skills, BAB, ect. Finally 90% of the skills advanced classes get boil down to "Expertise" or "Advantage" I think much of modern can be cleaned up and fit into the models we already have. Imagine am Investigator that is 90% 5e rogue but you can have a choice in how much sneak attack you gain vs maybe having some other skills or profs like the "Contacts" they get. I've never liked how D&D does specials like Evasion. I prefered Monte Cooks way of making that a feat for anyone to grab.
Truth be told SWSE may have been a better design for modern gaming even though I played Modern far far more. Brock_ Landers. How does your SWSE conversion look? I think a lot of people would love to see it |
| #32Sorin_777Dec 29, 2014 17:18:26 | FWIW, I think it would be a cool idea. I would be interested in playing it but, in the area of "too many games, too little time", I am also wrapped up in the Fantasy Flight Star Wars RPG. I have to "just say no" to about a thousand other cool games that I just couldn't possibly latch on to a new edition of modern. |
| #33arnwolf666Dec 29, 2014 21:40:52 | I love Urban Arcana. But I really find no new mechanics are needed. I use the same classes and expand the equipment list, create or expand a couple skills. I like the resource system in Fantasy Craft better than d20 modern, or I just use credits like in star wars.
I am not interested so much as for new rules for a modern setting. I want a cool modern setting with cool plots, NPCs, and intrigue. I want the setting and not the crunch, but I am happy if they give you guys your crunch if they can create the setting. |
| #34LuisCarlos17fDec 29, 2014 22:28:31 | We can get plots and backgrounds from movies, TV, novels, comics and videogames, for example from "Evil in us". But modern settins need a special XP reward system, because monsters and enemies become too weak, or too powerful, with modern technology. |

| #39BlinkDog1Jul 23, 2015 19:15:33 | To me it seems the two biggest hurdles for converting the older D20 modern to a 5e type system are the way multiclassing is handled in the new edition and the skill system.
I decided to recently do some though experiments making D20 characters using assigned attributes and found that all the talents and feats would work nicely using the 5e rules, the biggest hicup was with skills. Since skills are done so differently it was hard to figure out just how many skills a first level character should have and how to resolve attaining future skills. With the set proficiancy level with the new edition it became hard to figure out when a character could switch to a prestige class.
I have also noticed that 5e limits your ability to multiclass as well due to the limit of having only 20 levels, the previous issue of attaining new skills comes up as well.
Has anyone else noticed any sort of paradox between the old and newer rules? |
| #40cowleymenJul 24, 2015 2:56:26 | Ive never played d20 modern, was the third edition put out by wizards of the coast? i have seen many d20 sci-fis though, and Ive never really enoyed any of them. To me, the super heavy class system that d20 and 5e lends itself too never really sat right for me when it game to modern sytle games. Even the base stats of str, dex, con ect; dont have the right kind of feel that i seek for modern/scifi. I defiently have intrest in a modern system, and the behind the scenes article that came out several months ago (http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/my-new-d20-modern-campaign) has me very interested in it. |
| #41Brock_LandersJul 24, 2015 9:49:37 | I recently converted Star Wars Saga Edition to 5th Ed (quite intuitive and relatively easy), I will get back with some specifics. |
