#1 zagora_01 Jan 01, 2015 21:59:36	I'm thinking of playing an online game. I've played both but i'm still undecided. Neverwinter lacks class and race options, and I'm not sure if ddo is still going strong.   What are your opinions.   Also, I like to play the mmos like pen and paper. I play if I die, I'm dead unless I was resurected by a character.
#2 Maine Jan 01, 2015 23:03:12	Sounds like neither game is really what you are looking for.   Perhaps consider the older Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition (available from GOG.com for $10) , or Neverwinter Nights 2 (also on GOG for $20, or $25 for both).

You may like a different type of video-game than I.   So here's a brief opinion on both:   DDO: Fantastic game! I mean, really fantastic. It's not what I would call an "RPG" type of video-game (but neither is Neverwinter), not like the older ones such as Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights (not to be confused with the Neverwinter MMO). But it is a really good dungeon-based game. It differs a lot from what you're use to in MMOs. Really a different type of game, based on challenge and difficulty, not just "farming" levels, items and this sort of stuff.    The rules feel a lot like D&D and are based on 3.5, although they've added some original stuff to those rules. You get, well, more overpowered than a regular D&D character as you level, but all in all it still feels like building and leveling a D&D character. All the essential of 3.5 is there.   Neverwinter: Generic MMO with no "mojo" whatsoever. Really, there's nothing going on for this game that I would call cool or unique. I wouldn't say it's bad... but... as I said, totally generic MMO. You'll do your usual quests for leveling, than group for dungeons with tank/healer/dps and all that samey-ness of generic MMOs.   Plus... they say it's based on 4th Edition... it's NOT! It's not even remotely based on D&D. The only thing D&D it has, is the name they gave to some stats and mechanics in the game. Just to look like D&D, but the actual mechanics of the game has absolutely nothing whatsoever of D&D! Zip, nada, zero.        My suggestion: both games have Free-to-Play available. Try them both and see what kind of game you like best.    Personally, I'd suggest giving DDO a more serious thought. It's a better game overall, it's more unique, and if you're looking for a game that "feels" like D&D, it does a whole lot more than Neverwinter.

#7 Ashrym Jan 02, 2015 12:01:53	I absolutely enjoy DDO more than Neverwinter, I found the same thing where DDO was more like D&D, moreso back in 2006 because there have been a lot of changes with their version of epic rules, prestige classes, and online implementation of some classes and abilities but it's still a great game. Neverwinter didn't base itself on my preferred edition rules and didn't follow the ruleset advertised, IMO.  I know ppl who enjoy it but I found it rather generic. I also enjoyed LotRO from Turbine. You can join a permadeath guild in DDO easily enough and the game still seems to be going strong.
#8 DaveDash Jan 02, 2015 12:54:47	I find neverwinter laggy and underwhelming. DDO is a much better game, and due to the team nature of it gives you that Pen and Paper feeling more. I just haven't played it in a while so I don't know if its still populated.
#9 masterfat78 Jan 02, 2015 13:34:32	Both games break down when you get to end game. With DDO you pretty much needed to start paying for the end game. And new players where at a huge disadvantage in neverwinter after some of the changes made to it. Ive heard DDO has made alot of changes since I played it but not enough to interest me. Neverwinters PVP is pay to win and doesnt have enough options and their expansions are really uninspired and encourage whales, plus gold spammer run rampant in neverwinter like no other MMO Ive ever played(I hear elderscrolls is really bad also).
