Mike Mearls has been posting pics of promo sheets for each of the demon lords featured in Out of the Abyss on Twitter.

I see how most PC's must have already encountered Graz'zt.

I like it.  It sort of reminds me of the seven deadly sins, and how a writer once ascribed a demonic personage to each one.

Thank you.  That is cool.  I wonder if they will retroactively add some madness powers to the lesser demons too.  Something simple like everyone who gets within 15 feet of a regular demon has to save or be affected by demon fury (+2 to strength, -2 to AC, no concentration, make an OA on any living thing that leaves their space) unless they were under protection from good and evil, hallow, or a similar spell.  Might have to wait for 6e for that, but it would definitely mechanically set demons apart from other fiends.

Dude, graz'zt is my favorite as usual, but this is great info. if they ever create a second monster manual, this is the kind info an creatures i want it to be. I kinda also want a third one with more regular creatures too

The pictures are cool, but in my settings the demons are only "I want to destroy all only because I am evil (and I hate my mom)", but maybe a "I want to destroy all because I hate Divine Pantocrator and I wish to take revenge" or "I want to destroy all because I don't like this space-time line, and I want to travel by time to create my own space-time continium line where I rule".  I don't want stupy crazy cultists who worship an infernal creature who discounts them. I imagine the demon cults with the background from the White Wolf's rpg "Demon: the fallen".

In a fantasy world where you can see miracles by the clerics... who would adore infernal lords? Would you make a crime if you know there is a hell for your condemned soul?

Grazzites are so mad that they aren't just messiahs, but have a messianic complex ontop of being messiahs. @_@

Just to clarify, despite the similarities in our names, I am not Graz'zt nor a follower of his. I mean if I was would my profile pic be sucha  cute, adorable doggie?

I am sure these names have long histories attached to them, but some of them seem pretty badly conceived.

Jubilee means celebration, change the last 'e' to an 'x' and it is a faceless demon lord?

Orc is one of the most common people in virtually all D&D worlds so "Orc-us" seems an odd name for a demonlord with no relation to them. It would be like having the name "Elwyn" on a celestial lord that had nothing to do with elves.

And Demogorgon? As in "Demon Gorgon". The combination of demon and the general greek word for monster. That one just seems lazy.

I get that they are trying to reach out to old school fans, but... man.. I think I would rename these guys if I were going to use them in a campaign. The others are fine, but those three are in desperate need of a rename. Maybe include a second name as an AKA. Surely their names aren't the same in all languages.

Orcus actually was Roman God of the Dead akin to Dis Pater and Pluto. Christianity demonized all these figures as Satanic entities.

So making him the Demon Lord of the Undead makes a lot of sense, in terms of history.

Orcus and Demongorgon were both in Paradise Lost, among the aristocracy of the Abyss.  Satan makes a deal with their king (Night) to destroy Heaven and Earth to bring everything back into the primodial chaos of the Abyss (except maybe Hell).  Sadly, they never made other members of the court (like Rumor and Turmult) into demon lords.

Sounds like a Sara Douglass novel I read last summer. Almost word for word.

Graz'zt is pronounced Igratz. I would have never figured that out. Everyone I know pronounced it Gr Az zit. I live on a small island so the circle of gaming friends is small.

* You have to say the wrong way, because if you say the right pronuctation then you are summoning him, and that may be dangerous.

* The crazy cultist are cool for the Lovecraf's stories, but in a fantasy world where an army of paladins can terminate you mercilless you can´t be only cannon fodder. I don't like the dark cults with too stupy and crazy members. I would rather something smarter, like mason lodges and secret societies.. something lik the siths from Star Wars, or the Camarilla from "Vampire: the Mascarada". The better villain bosses are more good leaders than tyrannical sociopaths. The evil groups to survive need loyalty member, and this isn´t free. The villain boss needs a good reason, not only menace, to keep the loyalty of fellowers.  Without loyalty, the minions will not sacrifice for the boss.
