In last nights session on of the clerics asked for dinve intervention and pulled it off with a whopping 11% chance of it working.
The scenario was amassive strip min full of fire giants, cultists of tiamat, a pair of young red dragons and large amounts of hell hounds +king Snurre. THere were multiple things the PCs could have done such as sneak in, draw them off, incite a slave revolt, diplomacy, bluff etc.
THey chose frontal assault. THe 1stfighter was with 4 FIre GIants+8 hell hounds, the 2nd fight was the same again and they were spotted by a flying patrol of Urds (wingeed Kobolds).20 Urds each had a 5d6 blast crystal that explodes as a fireball. One of the PCs shot the crystal and set of a chain reaction explosion in the sky for 100d6 damage but it raised the alarm and the Fire Giants started organising in alert mode. Two dragons swooped in with 2 dragonborn gladiators using great axes on them. At the same time the fire giants released the hounds and 18 hell hounds came running up the entrance ramp ETA 3 rounds, 5 rounds after that 8 fire giantrts would have arrives after that the timat cultists (6 level 9 spell casters+gladiators)
The Dragons breath weapons managed to break concentration spells including a maximised cal lighning spell in a level 6 spell slot.
Note if PCs do something like kick the hornets nest I more or lesss throw the encounter level guidelines out the window. They were losing the fight being blunt and both clerics got desperate and called for help one of them pulled it off.
Now it says you can ask for a cleric or domain spell and the PCs had a quick look. Word of Recall was mentioned but thye were more than 5' away from each other. The effect was in the desription but they wanted a more powerful effect to get all of them out of their.
I'm not a super cruel DM so I granted the request but since it was a bit more powerful than what they could get I sent them elsewhere back to the Threshold where the campaign started and not where they wanted to go. I was not out to kill them but I was willing to TPK the party after all they went with frontal assault as plan A. You kick the hornet nest bad things can happen.
So basiically they all got a mass teleport effect and the PCs will have to deal with the consequences of of failure (metallic dragon gets sacrificed to Tiamat, Hand and/or Eye of Vecna may be recovered for the forces of Evil). Vecnas cult may also start working with Tiamats. They also missed out on Tiamats payment to King Snurre (100k gp) and they failed to break the alliance of tiamat and the giants.
So what do you guys think of this use of divine intervention? I more or less treat it as an old school wish spell anyway that will not screw you over in terms of power.

Being flexible in the *exact* effects, without it being a "get out of jail free card" (sounds like there were LOTS of consequences for failure!) will discourage them from trying to "break" Divine Intervention. |

Otherwise, sounds like their plan was ineffective and they paid a dear price for it. Worked as intended IMO.

The divine intervention would have gated in a bunch of highish level - a dont know off the top of my head - a trio of planatars - or whatever would have evened up the battle to make it hard but very survivable.
And I would have had them battle to the death. It would have been glorious, either way! And if they died, ah well, roll up new dudes yo! |
