Chapters 5, 7, and 9 look very interesting.

Appendix B sounds like it will be about 8 pages of the MM sorted by CR, Environment, etc.

Only one page for the creation of magic items, and it's in the DM section.  Maybe there aren't going to be rules for PCs to make items after all.

Creating a multiverse sounds interesting.

I've picked up the Elric books again and started reading.  Absolutely loved the first book (of the old Daw series).  I've collected Moorcock's books hodge-podge over the years (just wherever and whenever I can find 'em).

His multivese has always kinda intimidated me (the idea of an Eternal Champion for instance).  I'm ready to dip my toes in again (finally).  Have a sinking feeling I'm gonna be visiting wikipedia a lot though .

If you look closely at this preview and the preview of the firearms page (page 267 according to the lower lefthand corner), the table of contents has changed since this image was taken.  The table of contents clearly list page 267 as the first page of "How to Create a Monster" and there is absolutely no information of that nature on the firearms page preview.

Its silly to be too critical just looking at a toc, but I am really hoping for a lot of tweaks and hacks of the game as opposed to regurgitated generic info. Im asuming the DM workshop section is what I am looking forward to most, and at 20 or so pages it seems a bit scant. Def will have a look thru prior to outright purchase.

I think I'm being more analytical than critical. 20 pages is...

I would trade all the planes stuff for more options.

Loving the look of the table. Seems like plenty of options and the "workshop" section is where I will probably spend most of my time (along with the campaign and planes stuff). Customizing my own material is more interesting to me than canned options.

I find it very odd that the book will go through ~25 pages of explaining the Multiverse before getting into the really essential stuff such as running the game and creating adventures.

Poor choice of organization if you ask me. Especially for a new-DM trying to get a hang of the game, to be fed such non-essential information, irrelevant to get a new game going, right at the start could be overwhelming and dismaying. I would have left such stuff for appendixes at the end, or at least after all the more important stuff.

I got to say that 70 pages of magical itesm is a lot for a game that claims that you do not need magical items to play.

Also I am not sure where the section is for PCs creating magical items - it could possibly be in Section 9.  Hmm.

I like how the spin on playtest was all, "This is going to be the modular edition! Rules variants for every playstyle!"

Then the PHB came out with about as many "modules" in it as the 3e or 4e PHB, and the spin was all, "but wait for the DMG! It's basically Unearthed Arcana, what with all the awesome rules options we're putting in there!"

And now all those game-changing options get a grand total of 27 pages.

I can't wait for the spell point "module" that just says, "give everyone 2 spell points per class level. It's balanced, except when it's not." (Remember that one, guys? The debate over Vancian spell slots, which were far from universally popular, which Mearls said they resolved by including a module to allow for AEDU, spellpoints, and other variant magic systems, all designed to be balanced for any spellcaster class? Doesn't even make the TOC.)

/rant. Sorry for the negativity. A lot of what is here looks nice, but it certainly doesn't seem likely to be a huge departure from the style of previous DMGs.

I'm not really sure what everyone was expecting for combat options, but 3 pages isn't much.

Does anyone have any clue what ability options might be?

My hopes for the Wilderness Survival section includes hypothermia , dehydration, heat exhaustion etc... you know all those great things found in the 1e Wilderness Survival Guide.

btw, you can almost make out that one of the "Styles of Play" is called "Heroic Style"  It's hidden under the variant resting rules.     I think that's good news because the DMG is making it clear that people play this game very differently.

Chapter 8 Running the game under combat is were I believe the mass combat will be. Seige weapons are in the chapter also. Chapter 9 Dungeon Master Workshop is were I would think the customization options will be 27 pages or so. Things like lingering wounds called shots ect. Possibly spell points. I also believe that the DMG did get expanded some just based on the previous previews not matching the table of contents. I think the delay in the DMG may be related to some of the options and sections getting expanded. I also think that the Dungeon Master Workshop is one larger sections in a DMG for tweaking game that can remember being in a D&D DMG. Also the sections on world design and planes ect is to help new DMs not the experienced per say. I am happy seing the Table of contents in the DMG.

As I have indicated before I think for me most of the game had been completed with the players handbook and MM being done. I do think there will be a higher level of custimization than people think in DMG. Was the combat section in players handbook around 9 pages. 5 page battle system would be half the size of the combat system in the players and an addtional 3 pages in chapter 9 is 1/3 of the combat section in players handbook.

It is odd that the ToC they released doesn't line up with all the sample content pages they released. It's also odd that the 320 page count doesn't line up either. Unless the index is a comprehensive index of all three 5e core books...Or there's unmentioned filler pages like blank NPC/monster sheets, etc.

Dunno.

I can say I still am excited to see it at least, and will be giving 5e a serious run next year. Bottom line, to me, is that so far it fixes much more problems with D&D than it creates.

Do you think things like Martial Healing fall under Making New Character Options?  One of my group's players told me that options like that were supposed to be in the DMG?  It seems kind of odd to stuff it under the DIY section.  That'd be some worldclass spin right there!

"Oh, yeah, hey get this: there's going to be a ton of options for everyone!  Granted, you'll have to make them all yourself, but..."

Some of the stuff looks pretty interesting.  The lack of Shadowfell information leaves me a bit jittery, since Ravenloft was supposed to be in there or something like that?  Glad to see the monster tables, the Monster Manual left me really wanting some.

Overall impression: Some pretty good stuff, some filler, and a few questions that won't really be answered until we can see it.  Glad to see the Magic Item section is so big, but like another poster I wonder about its size in relation to "But you should only ever have an item or two."  Still high on my buy list overall.

From EWorld, Michael513 makes a good point:

For those disappointed by how few pages in the DMG are dedicated to optional rules/modules, I think a little perspective is in order. The Dungeon Master's Workshop chapter has 26 pages (25 if you assume a full art page at the front of the chapter). If you look at the PHB, the ENTIRE rules of the game (chapters 7-9) is covered in 27 pages (24 if you don't count the full art pages at the front of each chapter). So there are more pages in the DMG dedicated to rules options than there are pages in the PHB dedicated to the actual rules of the game. And this doesn't even factor in the possibility that there are sidebars with optional rules in other sections of the DMG. For someone craving rules options/modules, I for one am not disappointed in the least.

#74

AaronOfBarbaria

Oct 25, 2014 17:09:36

Yeah, it is important to keep perspective. Most optional rules are only going to need a few sentences or a paragraph to explain, so dozens of options can fit in a small number of pages.

Just got around to reading this and I have to say I'm pretty underwhelmed.  Looks like an awful lot of it is geared toward new DMs, is fluff-without-crunch (like race and class intros in the PHB) and/or is highly campaign setting dependent.

Possibly interesting bits:

The chapter on planes might be ok if it replaces the need for a separate Manual of the Planes. Otherwise it becomes a waste of pages as soon as that is published.

The two new villain subclasses that we've seen are great.  I wish there were more of this.

Downtime activities definitely need to be expanded

Magic Items, Artifact, Sentient Items, Alternate Rewards, and Rewards at Level 20 are always a good time

Hopefully chapter 8 will contain some rule clarifications and special case handling. /fingerscrossed for new poison types.

Chapter 9, Dungeon Master's Workshop, has me worried.  I'm both interested to see what those "options" are and dreading their influence at the table.

Monster indices....well, this should be an online tool.
