Hi all,
I've just been reading through the magic items section of the DMG, and I noticed several recurring symbols in the images of the items. One looks like a stylized "tm", while another looks like a trident with crossbars. A third looks like an upside down A, and a fourth looks like an eye (sometimes open, sometimes closed).
All four are on the rod of absorption on page 195, but some of them also appear on other items throughout the section. They look really familiar but I can't quite place them. Are they made up, or are they ancient Greek symbols or something? Is it just an inside joke, or is there some meaning behind them?
Anyone know?

They remind me of Sumerian symbols that they ripped off and used in the Necronomicon. Especially the 'tm' symbol. They don't actually look like anything that fits together collaboratively to from a uniform system that I am aware of. The eye seems Egyptian. Curious... good eyes!
This reminds me, I actually tried to use the Dwarven script in the PHB to decipher script found on the pictures of the rock walls in the Dwarf Race section of the PHB. Alas, it did not yield any real meaning and some of the symbols in the art of Dwarf race section were not even in the script found later in the book. A missed opportunity!

In fact, I think it might be the Prime symbol and not Hermetic at all, I'll find that out in a minute.
edit: Nope, it was the Correspondence symbol it looks like, and the Correspondence symbol has way more lines. (Imagine the same thing, but with like six or seven lines through it instead of the one.) I don't know where that one is from but I feel like I've seen it before somewhere.
The eye-looking one is, I believe, from the Neverwinter Nights logo.
the TM looks a lot like one of the Astrological signs. I don't think these have any specific meaning in the art but they all look like various mystic symbols.
