Durimg 3rd edition they made new versions of some of the old 1st ed books. For some strange reason I bought them all.
Left to right
Unearthed Arcana, Deities and Demigods, Fiend Folio. Monster Manual 2, Manual of the Planes.
IIRC they made MotP for 4E as well, and a MM2.
I think UA would be a good idea as not every rule variant will fit in the DMG, Deities and Demigods has always been a little silly and rather stating out the gods I would rather see missing 3rd ed domains+ some deity aspects and servents as opposed to stats for the gods themselves. FF/MM2 are just more critters I suppose but as a DM I do not mind that at all. MotP can be very useful or all but useless.
Thoughts?

| #3VanRicterSep 19, 2014 14:55:55 | I would really like to see them look into rewriting there best selling adventures with 5th edition rules. |

| #6TrillinonSep 19, 2014 15:19:38 | Mostly yes. Though they should take some time before attempting an Unearthed Arcana. I'm less interested in a Manual of the Planes than a Planescape setting book. But Fiend Folios and Monster Manuals are always good. Deities and Demigods doesn't interest me much.
But I'd love to see classic adventures updated to the new rules and trade dress. |
| #7draegnSep 19, 2014 15:52:54 | I would like to see all of the Bioware NeverWinter Nights material and expansion packs put into a mega module. |
| #8arnwolf666Sep 19, 2014 15:54:29 | I would like to see Manual of the Planes, unless it is just a rehashed version of what I have been reading of 30 years. The same goes for Deities and Demigods. I would like to see more on Quasi-deities, anyone remember them? |
| #9AaronOfBarbariaSep 19, 2014 15:58:06 | Saying that I want 5e versions of those classic books would be misleading - I do not want those books "converted" to 5e.
What I can say, though, is that I would love to see at least one more book filled with monsters, at least one more book with sub-classes and feats, and a book discussing the classic D&D multiverse through the lens of 5e... but I have zero desire for a book of deific beings.
In all cases, if they want to use "throwback" titles, that works for me. |

| #11noaharkwvSep 19, 2014 16:37:05 | Tome of Magic would be nice for more of the spells they weren't ready to cover in the PHB.
Fiend Folio is great for including some really nasty monsters.
Unearthed Arcana would be nice to add a few new archetypes for each class.
Manual of the Planes would be nice if they made it more complete so I didn't have to get two Fiendish Codex books in the future. |
| #12WebsterSep 19, 2014 19:38:09 | Not really. Been there, done that. I'd like to have new material. |
| #13TiaNadiezjaSep 19, 2014 19:48:29 | Good conversions - conversions that capture what was good in some classic modules and discards the massive pile of awful ideas that came with the good because the whole genre was new and nobody knew what made a module good or bad at the time - of the B and especially X-series modules would make me smile. |
| #14arnwolf666Sep 19, 2014 20:40:37 | I would like a 5E reprint of Tall Tales of the Wee Folk :-)
Like that will ever happen |
| #15ArtifactSep 19, 2014 21:48:00 | Unearthed Arcana was my favorite book for 3e. I even bought two copies (only do that for the PHB). Lots and lots of variants. That's why I'm so anxious to see the 5e DMG.
Tall Tales of the Wee Folk was my favorite book for BECM. My PC had a hsiao (wise owl) as a mentor NPC.
Manual of the Planes was my favorite book for 4e. Loved the World Axis cosmology. I even retro-fitted it into our 3.5 homebrew.
= = =
That all said: No. I don't want 5e conversions or updates of this material. I plan on doing some of that myself anyway. What I really want is to see what DDN offers that I haven't seen before.
I'm especially interested to see how the writers and designers *mesh* 4e and traditional D&D lore. I'll be doing some of that myself (along with the conversions) but it would still be nice to see other takes. I didn't particularly care for how they lumped bits of the World Axis into the Great Wheel but there's still time for some real creativity I think.
Off-topic: Just got my Monster Manual today. Absolutely beautiful book. At first, I wondered if I had moved beyond traditional D&D (in favor of an approach more like 4e) but no doubt about it, I still love this game. Cannot wait to get my hands on the DMG and see the complete system. |
| #16BW0222Sep 20, 2014 0:02:29 | No.
IMO, once WotC gets the three core books out... it should focus on publishing soft-cover settings books (no rules, just countries, cities, maps, descriptions, etc.) for its key settings (FR, Greyhawk, Ebberon) and them soft-cover adventures for this. 30-40 pages, one to three levels per, often in arcs... and get a good set of these out.
Introducting more 'splat books' (at least initially) is not likely to win converts to 5E. Costs need to be kept low. If 3.x, Pathfinder, or 4E players see a $200+ splat book collection, IMO, it will seriously slow the adoption rate. Likewise, not having their favorite setting or pre-make adventures also slows convertion. Wait two years until you have a base on 5E. |

| #19KazadvornSep 20, 2014 7:02:19 | Once I see the DMG, I'll have a better idea, but at this point.... NO.
With Pathfinder, I wish I had bought the Core book and maybe the first Monster Manual (I could have probably worked with my 3.5 ed MM's) and stopped. That one book was really all I needed and it turns out, that's all I really wanted.
What I'd like to see them focus on is Settings and Campaign manuals with plenty of high quality Adventure Modules to support the campaign settings.
First on the wish list? DARK SUN... Campaign setting and monster manual...
In fact, I think that it might be a good idea to drop the concept of generic MM, MM2, MM3 that seems to have become standard... in favor of some sort of 'themed' monster manuals. So if they release a campaign book for Dark Sun, maybe they'd do a Dark Sun monster manual... or just include the setting specific creatures in the campaign manual. I can see it working both ways... If they put the monster manual in the campaign book, that would generate some good will from folks who's say..."Wow, thanks guys... that saves me some cash, I don't have to buy two books.". On the other hand, a DM who wants some new monsters... but doesn't want to run a Dark Sun campaign would be well served by a Dark Sun Creatures manual that's separate from the campaign book.
They could also do some 'concept' books... Like "Open Grave - Secrets of the Undead" from 4e. A book that expands on the subject of the Undead... Includes some DM tips for running an campaign focused on battleing the Undead.. and some expanded variations on Undead creatures... maybe even containing a couple of small sample adventures... like the 4e book did.
As far as 'core books' goes... I think 'less is more'... As much as I love 4e --- and I DO LOVE 4e --- I don't want to see a return to PH1, PH2, PH3, DMG1, DMG2, "X" Power... ad infinitum books. (That said, I do wish they would have finished - or continued the series. Against my better judgement, I'd still buy a 4e DMG3 focused on Epic level characters and adventures. I've got a problem... 4e junkie... I sleep with a pile of 4e manuals next to the bed.)
Now that I'm 57, what I need is a simple, concise group of core books and alot of support on the Campaign and Adventure module front. I just don't have the time to design settings and write adventure plots anymore. |
| #20Arawn76Sep 20, 2014 7:25:09 | A couple of campaign settings...let you guess which I'd prefer 5e version of the brown and blue books from 2e
The environment books ie stormwrack if done better would be interesting. |
| #21sailoroswaldSep 20, 2014 9:07:22 | Campaign setting books are what I'm interested in. Love me some campaign fluff. They'd also be good books to place off the wall rules that fit the setting. A few extra monsters would be good too.
I thought the old 3e environment books were okay. I'd rather see a single tome handle it than having to buy a desert book, and an ocean book, etc.
While I know it's the traditional method to have a PHB2/DMG2/Etc., I'd much rather see a book that throws them together. Give me a book with more player options and more DM options together.
I have limited shelf space, so the more books they can comprehensively put together, the better. |
| #22arderkragSep 20, 2014 9:27:31 | I'd like too see the return of campaign box sets. The books aren't nearly as cool as the boxes were stylistically. |

| #27DreamstryderSep 20, 2014 20:09:48 | Thanks for laying them all out like that; it's fun to look at. For me, it actually inspired some questions rather than answers: Unearthed Arcana or DMG II? Why FF instead of another MM? Or should be name each new monster book some new alliteration? Should Manual of the Planes be part of a campaign setting book, or is it already a campaign book in itself?
But for more monsters (especially from non-European cultures), I'm personally interested in other things. I'm interested in settings that D&D hasn't quite visited before or recently, like science fantasy or post-apocalyptic fantasy, or the material to help make them (something like Numenera perhaps, or Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, with mecha, strange vehicles, and fantasy mutant parasites... I like cultural detail, but not long histories and mythologies.) I'm also looking for good exploration adventures.

| #30Brock_LandersSep 21, 2014 0:22:23 | Yes, I would like 5th Ed versions of:
Campaign Settings (all of them!)
Manual of the Planes
Deities & Demigods
Psionics Handbook
Fiend Folio/Monster Manual II
Unearthed Arcana (chock full of variants)

| #31rampantSep 21, 2014 0:56:04 | I'd like to see the 5e version of some of the classic stuff, COuncil of wyrms, eberron, athas, planescape, anything with dinosaurs as a major component.
But I think I'd prefer if 5e spent a bit of time stretching it's legs and working the kinks out first.
I don't even want them to attempt an artificer clas until late 2017. |
| #32CCSSep 21, 2014 1:18:31 | I assume they'll rehash the titles in their inventory. Books/settings/adventures etc. |
| #33arnwolf666Sep 21, 2014 1:26:58 | I would like the next Deities and Demigods to have no deity statistics, but to be about how to use them in your campaigns and how it relates to the Cleric class. Maybe archetypes for Cleric for specific deities. |
| #34rampantSep 21, 2014 1:34:27 | I dunno, the threat of deicide is the only thing keeping those jerks in check. |

| #37OraibiSep 21, 2014 3:15:08 | I'm kind of already tired of nostalgia-driven game design in 5e and would love to see them do something and original -- like all of those books were in 1e when they first came out. |

| #39Caliburn101.Sep 21, 2014 7:12:42 | What they should do is re-release all of the campaign worlds thusfar created with 5th Ed. statblocks.
They wouldn't have to change the text in all but a few cases - just the stats listed.
Add a little evocative artwork to replace the badly dated, just plain bad, and to doevtail it with the current artwork zeitgeist and repackage.
They would make a fortune...
There is no need to just run with FR - and in fact it's not going with the mission statement. Not everyone sees FR as THE multi-edition showpiece, and they shouldn't make it the default.
Greyhawk for instance should be relaunched at the point it left off with all the appropriate previous material summarised as 'history' and the latest material as 'current'.
It wouldn't create that much work and would sell very well. The same is true, I am sure of Dark Sun, Planescape, etc.
Just my two pence on the issue... |
| #40Mind_Flayer_MonkSep 21, 2014 7:49:54 | I would rather see new content and original ideas.
There was some great content in 4e. |
| #41The_JesterSep 21, 2014 8:23:03 | Unearthed Arcana 1e and Unearthed Arcana 3e were very different books.
The rest I expect we'll see. |
