Well do ya? In the new Warrior/Martial book? Someplace else? Will you hoserule them in until official rules appers? No likey?

To me, exotic/superior weapons come in 3 groups which apply to 5th edition.

Pure Damage upgrades of existing martial weapons.

Greatbows

Waraxes

Dire picks

Various chain weapons (reach finesse weapons which deal real damage)

Etc

Unique properties and combination of properties

Double Axe, Two Bladed Sword and other double weapons (attack with second end as bonus action)

Various Repeating Crossbows (crossbows with no loading property)

Special weapons

Bolas

Garrotes

Double crossbows

Lassos

Firearms

I'm no big fan of the pure damage weapons. But since I want to create a exotic weapon master subclass of the fighter, those would be its damage bump.

Your thoughts.

I have thought about this, and only if they make new weapons that are just setting unique but still martial or simple, if not with the damage numbers they will just become a feat tax for martial characters, and that is kinda going against the idea of 5e.

I wouldn't mind more unusual weapons coming out in the future - chain weapons, spiked shield, etc.     But nothing so soon.    And, truthfully, I prefer the standard weapons used throughout history (ie the default ones in the book!) actually be the superior ones, while the more exotic ones having unique quirks that someone can toy with for amusement or a speicific combo.   I do NOT want power creep where the weapons in the core book basically become obsolete.

I want Bolas, Garrotes, Lassos, and Chain Weapons.  I don't think these are superior or exotic though – I hope to see them in an Adventurer's Vault-like supplement.

I want Firearms, and I HOPE the DMG has a section on using them and what that means for the game (when you advance it into the firearm age).  It's a big change, but primitive firearms were used alongside medieval weaponry, as well as equivalent Chinese/Japanese weaponry.  I hope they have rules for primitive firearms, as well as advancing into an age where firearms are much more reliable, as well as the in-between phases (rather than throwing them at us and suggesting that they all existed at the same time, and some, which are more risky, are simple, while others are martial).  Firearms defy the simple/martial split.  ANYONE can use them – that's the point.  But early ones were heavy and had bad kickbacks and had poor aim.  The POINT of firearms was to create a simple bow/crossbow that anyone could use, so they shouldn't be martial.  But their damage dealing potential shouldn't be low either.  It gets us into the trouble, though, of what HP represents.  If HP is another way of talking about accuracy (that arrow didn't kill me, it barely missed me, or it it a non-lethal spot), then early firearms should deal less damage than a longbow, since the point was, they may be less accurate, but anyone can use them, you didn't need decades of training to use them correctly.  But then again, the shortbow has ended up as a simple weapon for no good reason save having to add it to proficiencies of various classes.  And the Hand Crossbow and the Heavy Crossbow ended up as martial weapons, despite their simplicity of use.

Weapon categories are messed up.

I wouldn't mind seeing new weapons, in the rare cases where a weapon not present can't be given a satisfactory treatment by simply changing the name of a weapon already in the books (such as me feeling their is no need for a kama because we have a sickle).

I would, however, prefer that no new classification of weapons besides Simple and Martial be invented. I am a big fan of the idea of their being weapons which the Fighter (and other classes with similar weapon proficiencies) is not proficient with by default - they end up either being not worth anyone ever using because they require a feat investment and aren't hands down better than using a weapon out of the PHB and a different feat or ability boost, or they end up being hands down better and leave players feeling that they "must" use them, neither of which are good in my opinion.

I'm no fan of the pure damage ones. I don't like the damage creep.

I prefer more special weapons. Bolas that trip on hit at range. Garrotes that allow attacks as bonus actions on grappled enemies. Lassos and chains for ranged grapples. Double crossbows which can shoot on or two bolts but takes longer to load. Boomerangs and chakrams which return on miss if thrown short distances. Longstaffs that let you make one attack as a bonus action when you dodge and don't move.

No. I think you can easily reskin the weapons already on the list to provide whatever kind you need.

I think reskinning and the "special" property should be the places for crafting exotic weapons. I wouldn't want to see pluses to hit/damage or increased damage dice.

Superior weapons not really. If Superior weapon as an alternative path to magic weapons are fine with me. Superior weapons as a feat tax no.
