Dragon and Dungeon

I am truly sorry if this has already been discussed but what is happening with these two online magazines now?

I used to subscribe to them when I was actively playing fourth edition.  I loved the idea that new feats and classes that they introduced would become "core" - namely that they would enter the character builder and hence not be "lost" or forgoten about when time came around for character creation.  I used to like buying Dragon and Dungeon periodically when they were out in paper but would tend to forget about the various options they presented.

Will D&D 5th edition be doing this?  Has this already started?  Will there be active integration with online character creation and will material be considered "canon" (and properly vetted and balanced!).

Just curious to see if Dragon and Dungeon are still going on.

I hope they don't do that actually.  I hate when game rules are printed in magazines.

There hasn't been any word, yet, other than the magazines are on temporary hiatus.

If we do get mechanics via the magazines, I think it will be less than we received at 4E's peak. Firstly, there are fewer designers on the payroll, at present. Secondly, I think 5E's balance is more delicate. They've done a good job making sure the classes were mostly competitive before release. In 4E, there were classes/builds that were significantly less effective without D&DI support (Battle Cleric and Avenger come to mind). While I'm unimpressed by the Ranger, I think they avoided gimped classes/builds in the PHB, this time around.

I wouldn't mind DDI supplying some crunch, now and then. I do feel like I'm getting more for my money when there are some mechanics involved. I can handle my own setting fluff, for the most part. I would be in favor of seeing the "Eye on..." articles return, especially if Keith Baker is writing the Eberron articles.

Assuming they are a paid feature once more, they will have to create some interesting content and value bundling to get my money this time. At its peak, I felt like DDI was worth the cost. Once Essentials came and flopped, and 4E's imminent abandonment was apparent, DDI became useless.

I'm more interested in D&D DungeonScape, really, just as I was into Insider for the original Character Builder and the Compendium. I'm hoping all mechanical content will be available through DungeonScape. Early reports suggest that's the plan.

I'm all for the return of Dungeon but Dragon as great as some of the articles could be isn't high on my list.

Dungeonscape interests me though.

It depends on if they can offer subscrition based online content that is attractive without adding in the magazines. If their tools are good enoug that people will pay them a monthly fee just for that, they probably won't publish the magazines as well.

Dollars and sense.

There may be a return of the magazines, but the idea of anything in them being "core" is long dead. There is no true "core" in 5E, because everything is optional, even the "core" classes and races.

Everything is core, and nothing is core. DM's and groups do what they want.

That's been the way of all TTRPGs for 40 years.

True, 'organized play' has its thing, but, I don't do that, so I don't follow its rules.

I'd like to see Dungeon and Dragon just be out sourced, and added to this new dungeonscape thing.

Anything WotC does should either be published in hard cover rule books, soft cover adventure books, (both for sale, on amazon, LGS's, etc, obviously) or just free pdfs from their website.

Alright so I guess Dungeonscape will be the new Dragon and Dungeon then.  I liked the articles for a read and to cherry-pick ideas but the real treat was to have the features for characters usable (i.e. in the character creation database) when it came round to character generation and progression rather than on the shelf gathering dust so this isn't such bad a thing.  As a traditionalist a part of me hopes the magazines will live on in some manner though.

Maybe we could see a "Dragon Compedium" with almost canon staff, for example new, or remade, races and classes. Something like a Player's handbook 2, 2,5..
