Noticed that no one mentioned this so I thought I'd post. Dungeonscape mentioned that the app would be free to download and use in a limited capacity, with add-ons being available for purchase(PHB content, DMG content etc).

I asked if the Basic D&D we already have access to would be for free there as well, and after a little back and forth, the answer ended up being no. For free we can use and level(to a certain level) any of the 5 pregens. But no access to the free basic stuff.

I'm kinda bummed about that, but am happy that the word subscription never came up

I've read someone else asked if there'd be a subscription or a "pay for what you want" model as they said they'd have options "for everyone." Not outright saying you can just pay a one time fee, but here's hoping.

Here's a reddit post by Hobodelight where she seems to be saying it'll be one off purchases not subscription.

Steering clear of subscription models would make a lot of people happy, me included.

When I did the playtest of it at Gencon they said they were looking at multiple potential pay models, and possibly doing multiple of them.

A pay large up front for the software and have updates forever type model.

A pay small up front for the software and then pay for individual updates you want.

A subscription based model where you get the software and have access to all the current updates as long as you're still active on your subscription.

paying for updates will suck and the premium master gold option will probably be like 200$.

I really hope it's one time purchases for your HD. A subscription sucks. Even MMO's are getting away from the subscription model, and they are a ton more complex and involved the a character builder. Besides, what if I don't want or need every goddamn splatbook that comes out over the next few years in it? My ideal model would be 20 bucks or so for the 3 core books, and 5 bucks or so each for splatbooks and setting books.

Also...and this has probably been answered, but is it iOS and android only? Or do actual, real computers get to use it too?

PS: It's a shame they aren't letting all of the Basic PDF be free...That'd make more sense. I remember the first 4e CB was free up to level 3 when it was released, so you could at least get started with it (and get hooked on using it).

I have doubts that this will be a viable solution for me as a digital version of 5th that I can take with me. If not Im sure Ill find a free version online somewhere.

Hell...give it until january if you guys are patient enough and there will be a dozen FREE apps available that do everything you want.

it is 2014.  no reason to be scammed by shoddy programs like that when 'billy in his basement' will make you an awesome app for free in his spare time as a hobby.

and billy will be happy to share it as a fellow gamer and as a friend.

I'll try out the beta, if they let me, it looks good from the screenshots, but I'm cautious about the payment model.

Meanwhile, I've written my own character generator. It does what I want - infinite pregens.
