| #1CelticPaladinAug 01, 2014 6:51:09 | From the Wizards of the Coasts twitter: here.
All in all, I like the art of the weapons. The only one I dislike is the giant box hammer, which has always seemed silly to me. Warhammers looked a lot more like the weapon that is above the one above it. |

| #3thespaceinvaderAug 01, 2014 8:40:22 | Is there any new information here at all, or is it just new art?
The art looks fine. I like the artichoke-mace. |

| #5Hurin88Aug 01, 2014 8:45:33 | The art is pretty good. The maul is a little over-the-top, but considering how gigantic previous editions made some of the weapons, it's not that bad at all.
What I don't like is finesse: it should allow you to use Str or Dex for the attack roll, but not the damage roll. Allowing characters to use Dex for both attacks AND damage is a recipe for making Dex a god-stat. |

| #12KalaniAug 01, 2014 10:48:49 | Admittedly, the differences are negligable. The Dex fighter will have better Dex saves for the majority of their career, but the Str Fighter will have better AC. IMO, thats a point in favor of both options being interchangable with neither option being clearly superior to the other. This is a good thing.
In addition, from what little we know about magic items - most magic weapons and armor will focus on special abilities, such as a +3 dwarven thrower, or +2 elven chain. Given the stereotypical examples of "special" items, and the kinds of weapons/armor they are attached to - it is my suspicion that this will skew things slightly in favor of the strength fighter - as such characters will most likely have greater variety in magic item selection. Again, this is a negligable benefit and would be entirely group/DM-dependant (as 5e makes no assumptions regarding magical item aquisition, or distribution).
Likewise, we have yet to see the full range of feats available in the game, but it is my suspicion that the feats will end up a net zero, and will simply reinforce Str/Dex fighter stereotypes but be of comparable value. |

| #14setiAug 01, 2014 11:06:02 | Dex for damage is great, and not OP, IMO. It allows rogues to do decent dagger, rapier, shortsword, etc. damage. It also helps rangers (at least in previous editions) and monks be about on the level of fighters with their melee damage output.
It also makes a lot of sense. Many weapons in reality relied more on precision use over brute force to hurt and kill people. Armies didn't issue 1000's of great axes, mauls, and great swords. Armies issued 1000's of spears, short swords, and daggers. In reality, 'finesse' killed more men than brute strength over the millenia. In the modern real world, weapons are pretty much all 'finesse' and/or ranged weapons (Dex)...Aside from baseball bats and explosives
Speaking of spears, IMO, the spear should be a finesse weapon too. Not the pike/longspear, of course. Stuff like the katana (if you use it) could be finesse as well. |
| #15KalaniAug 01, 2014 11:53:15 | The daishou combat style (Katana + Wakizashi) would be best represented by the Dual Wielder feat, which could be gained as early as 4th level (or 1st level if using variant human traits). Few samurai fought using nitoujutsu (two-sword), although this style has been heavily romanticized in the West - and of those who did, most of them trained in traditional kenjutsu first, learning nitojutsu later in their careers. To me, requiring characters to take a feat to simulate this combat style is TWF working as intended.
The other main example (Rapier/Arming sword + Main guache) can already be recreated at 1st level (Rapier + Dagger), due to the rapier being a finesse weapon. Heck, you can go all musketeer using two rapiers if you want. |

| #23KalaniAug 01, 2014 14:02:38 | For those who were not part of the playtest - one important consideration when discussing 5e mechanics - is the fact that there is a lot of interconnectivity between rules, class features, and other game systems.
As a result of this, you cannot view most features in the game (such as dexterity to damage) in isolation, as the design choice is interconnected with multiple other features (fighting style, extra attacks, weapon damage, etc) and is balanced accordingly. It is very important to be aware of the interconnectivity between even seemingly disparate features (a wizards 40d6 meteor swarm vs. a fighters 8 attacks/round) before making judgements on whether something is balanced, or OP.
Dexterity to damage was present in almost all of the playtest material, and it was never a major issue despite some 150,000 playtesters having been exposed to this mechanic, and giving feedback on it (and everything else in the game). |
| #24masterfat78Aug 01, 2014 14:25:04 | I think at later levels the dex fighter might be the more survival style fighter because dex saves are going to be needed all the time. They are with out a doubt the most common save that will be used. Yeah the str fighter might wear heavy armor but a dex fighter can always use a shield in melee. Does that make the str fighter trash? i kinda doubt that but it does make the dex fighter the stronger choice espially when you can use the longbow over the javelin. |
| #25KalaniAug 01, 2014 14:37:16 | That is a matter of opinion. As a stated design goal, bounded accuracy narrows the gap between the haves and have nots. Most characters (regardless of class or subclass) will have decent dexterity scores due to the importance of Initiative and Dex Saves alone. To that end, I expect it to be most characters primary, secondary, or tertiary stat (depending on class/build).
This holds true even for Strength fighters. While they might care about adding Dex to AC or melee attack rolls, they will care about Dex for other reasons (stealth, initiative, saves, long-range attacks etc) - especially in light of the fact their armor will impose disadvantage on some checks. I expect a lot of fighters to have 12+ Dexterity regardless of build.
Furthermore, once Maximum Stat caps (20) and Ability Score Bonuses are factored in, I expect that gap to narrow with increasing level, due to the increasing importance of Dex saves. I highly doubt anyone will use Dexterity as a Dump stat, and for those that do - well, they know the risks associated with their choice and will have to live with them. |

| #27masterfat78Aug 01, 2014 14:38:13 | Thats funny because the pregen fighter does exactly that in dumping his /her dex. Its the first thing I noticed when looking at it, I thought this guy is hamburger going up against anyone who uses magic that is dex save based. And There are a few classes that are going to have to dump dex because they need other stats. Like I said I dont consider str fighters trash but I do think that dex fighters are ahead of the curve in this race. |

| #30KalaniAug 01, 2014 15:02:21 | True. A dex fighter can wear the heavier armor (just as easily as a Str fighter can wear lighter armor). Honestly, in 5e - I think it would be smart to carry both types of armor for different occasions, esp considering most armor will be nonmagical, or +1 at best (rare, special armors excluded as their existence/non-existence will depend entirely on DM fiat). With bounded accuracy as it is, even nonmagical spare armor will be valuable [read: superior] in the right circumstances.
A dex fighter wearing heavy armor removes his Dex Bonus to AC, and suffers disadvantage on stealth checks. Some players may see this as undermining the Dex fighters strengths however, but I simply see it as a player choice. The same can be said of a Strength figher who wears light armor despite having a lower Dex Score. Such characters may be focusing on the stealth and movement elements of the character, and not care about the 1-3 point difference in AC (depending on class level).
To me, the fact that at least 3 of the above options are viable choices while the 4th (Str Fighter in light armor) is at a slight disadvantage tells me that the player options are far more versatile and robust than in earlier editions, which had far fewer mechanically-viable options, and many suboptimal choices. |
| #31PsikerlordAug 01, 2014 16:16:04 | Fighter with high strength, dump dex. He knocks dudes prone all the time which give him adv on this multiple attacks, he can grab and drag dudes around like no-one's business, he breaks down doors etc. As for dex saves, he has the shield feat which gives his shield bonus to his dex saves... and presumably this will go up with a magic shield.... plus if he can find a bit of cover (inc an ally) he'll add an extra +2 dex save bonus on top of the shield. Dex saves solved.

| #34masterfat78Aug 02, 2014 13:58:50 | I cant say anything about the feats until we see the final form they take. I would be surprised if greatweapon master feat wasnt nerfed a little, its far and away one of the strongest feats there was in the playtest. That and the fact that they got rid of DOAM which meshed so well with that feat does change thing up. |
| #35NoonAug 02, 2014 22:57:06 | I like the emphasis on the weapons instead of the words. |
| #36lawrencehoyAug 03, 2014 21:06:13 | I wonder why they decided to put two pictures of both battle axes (bottom weapon on each page) and, possibly, maces (if the first weapon is a mace, I can't think of anything else it might be). Unless one of the axes is actually a halberd or poleaxe. |
| #37SturmunddrangAug 03, 2014 21:32:14 | I hope we're getting shown the artsy pages. 2 pages of equipment, 1 of art and 1 of rules. The feats had 2/3 of the page be art and we saw how well giving prefernce to art over rules went there... |

| #40setiAug 04, 2014 1:58:18 | I was just happy to see weapons illustrated in a pencil drawing-style instead of an obviously digital shiny colored style. It reminds me of a lot of some of the 3e internal art that I loved.
I am biased, though...I like stuff like DaVinci's sketchbooks, and I personally like using just monochrome pencil and charcoal or pen and ink.
I also like seeing a more realistic warhammer instead of a WoW/Marvel's Thor-type rediculous unwieldy warhammer. A brick on a short stick is not a good weapon, LOL. |

| #43masterfat78Aug 04, 2014 15:48:18 | I would have a hard time calling someone who threw a ten into their dex stat a min/maxer. AC is not the reason some people call dex the uber stat. Too me dex saves are more important and iniative is always good for the first strike. Longbow is way better than any other range weapon if you have the dex. One point of AC is not that big a deal to me and a dex fighter can still get that giving up some movement and stealth. But like I said in an earlier post, a dex fighter using a longbow in heavy armor is still a nasty mix of range DPR and defense. So he cant move that fast, he dont need to. |
| #44TiaNadiezjaAug 04, 2014 16:58:08 | In a game where combats last 2-4 rounds, initiative is huge. Dex is probably second only to Con on the list of stats everybody benefits from. |

In my opinion, the goal should be making the options obvious based on what you are aiming for as opposed to obscure and far-reaching. Even then, I take issue that the 16 STR Fighter is outofhand inferior to the 20 STR counterpart. The 20 STR Fighter gave up *something*, probably Exploration and Interaction-Pillar statistics. The 16 STR Fighter most likely CHOSE to be more well-rounded. |
