A familiar can take actions, just not the attack action.

Among other things, this means a familiar can take the Help action. This means that fortune low cost of a feat (Ritual Caster) you can have an easy source of advantage on the first attack you make every round.

Rogues can always get their sneak attack without needing to hide. Paladins get an increased hit chance for their smites. Low level warriors get the benefits of reckless attack with now of the downsides.

Am am I missing something?

P.S. Your other ritual should be unseen servant.

It's about 10 gp a pop and familiars pop fast given their low hit points. I can probably accomplish the same thing for free by playing to get Inspiration. Still not a bad trick though.

They're possible familiars for a Pact of the Chain Warlock, but not a regular find familiar spell.

Also, the familiar must be adjacent to the target of your attack, so it's quite likely the familiar will "pop" early in the combat.  That being said, for the cost of (part of) a feat, you could have advantage for one attack roll or ability check per turn.  Seems similar to the benefit of the Lucky feat in scope.

Note that Rogues don't actually need the "Help" action to get Sneak Attack, as the familiar merely being within 5' of the target will provide grounds for Sneak Attack (barring other sources of disadvantage).  The "Help" action would increase accuracy, though.

Take a look at arcane trickster. I don't have my phb but I think the level 9 ability grants something similar but for mage hand as a special ability. As long as this trick doesn't steal the AT's thunder it looks cool.

Um don't familiars have the ability to exist in their master's space, and basically live in their pockets, and use the boss for cover all the time? COuldn't they use that to avoid getting knocked off?

Nice catch. I dont think this trick is particularily OP, but definitely increases the combat utility of the familiar.

Is this really a problem though. You can hire a someone untrained to 50 days for roughly the same cost with comparable advantages. Not to mention that all sounds like reasonable advantages.
