Feats!

I hope future books add some more fun feats to take and that help to provide more good options.

Please make good feats for spell casters.

Since most of the DnD classes have spell casting abilities, it would be nice to have more spell casting feats.   Magic initiate and ritual casters are about giving spells to a character that a currently doesn’t have access.  It would be nice to see feats that increase the power of spells.  From the feats below, only war caster is generally good with Elemental Adept and Spell Sniper being poor - good depending on the build.

War caster – This is good because concentration is so important.

Elemental Adept – Good for dragon sorcerers that rely on one damage type.  Still not all that exciting as you only do slightly more damage unless the target has resistance.   Could use increased spell range or some other feature.

Spell sniper –    Works on cantrips,                                                     doubles range, ignores cover, gives a cantrip.

Sharpshooter -  Works on all your ranged weapon attacks, ignores range penalties, ignores cover,  trade -5 to hit for +10 damage.

Compare spell sniper to sharpshooter.  I would rather have the -5 to hit and +10 damage instead of a cantrip.  Additionally, once you get enough spell slots, spell casters won’t be using their cantrips as their primary action unless they are a specialized build like an evocation wizard or a eldritch blast sorcerer.   A ranged weapon attacker will probably using their ranged attack as their action most of the time.

I can imagine a feat that would give another spell slot, max level a character can cast up to level 5 or 7.

I can imagine a feat the gives more spells known (from your class).

I wish some of the sorcerer abilities were feats instead of stuffed into that class.

Others feats:

Sharpshooter/Crossbow expert and Polearm master/Great weapon master – these combos are extremely good compared to other options.  These combos should be reduced in power or other options should be made available of similar effectiveness.

I can see a defensive feat,  if you use your action to make a weapon attack you can take a minus X to hit for a plus X to AC.

Things that won’t change, but I wish they were different:

  1. I wish feats were smaller and obtained more often, preferably once per level.  I choose human because I like feats.  Some class features could be moved to the feat department.  Such as the fighting style from fighter/paladin/ranger.  Classes could have a recommended feat selection to build it the way it existing now for people who don’t want the configurability.

  1. Feats were broken into smaller components and weren’t specific to a class of weapons. Such as hand crossbows and polearms.  Even the -5 to hit +10 damage GWM could be critical strike for dex based attackers.

  1. Ability increases separated from feats, it’s a boring advancement but often the most effective based on how many poor feats there are.

Spell based feats are weaker than weapon based feats by design. It is part of the way spellcasters are being kept balanced (so that we don't repeat the 3e debacle).

There are good feats for casters!

I think that your focus is mainly on the lack of a spellcaster "-5/+10" and the abuse a player could bring with Polearm Mastery.

As a Sorcerer I am extremely interested in:

-Alert

-Defensive Duelist, because this is a semi-Shield without costing me a spell slot.

-Elemental Adept for the increase in damage and how it works against resistance, too bad it doesn't work against immunity.

-Inspiring Leader since I think it's one of the best ways to heal.

-Lucky, the only inexplicable luck is that we were lucky enough to have this banned in our campaign.

-Observant is incredibly powerful.

What you will notice is that these feats are incredibly powerful, they just don't focus on damage output.

And do we really need that when we are casting Fireballs?

Further analysis of weapon based feats:

Charger - decent unlil you get an extra attack action.

Defensive Duelist:  - has one good ability but not three abilities.  It's powerful but could use another ability or two.    A first level shield spell is a much better option if available.

Dual Wielder - +1AC and a bigger damage die on off hand attack.  It's rather weak and dual wielding is likely only effective for rogues at higher levels.

Savage attacker - Here again, only one ability instead of three and you can only use it once per round.  Averages probably 3 or so more damage per turn at best.  It's simply not that exciting.

Hoping they make some feats that are more exciting to help give people better options for weapon choice feats.

Best choices in my book are:

Sharpshooter/Crossbow expert and Polearm master/Great weapon master and Sentinel.

I don't support nerfing any of the feats. Just because you believe a feat combination is over powered doesn't mean it isn't balanced. I would like some new feats though, more options are always fun

The Princes of the Apocalypse focused on Elemental magic and therefore provided a plethora of spells and yet no feats. I'm cool with this as long as not every release only provides spells and no new feats. I don't think it would have been a bad thing to have had some new feats in the Princes of the Apicolypse.  I imagine they'll focus on feats at some point down the road.  The upcoming Alice in Wonderland themed adventure has me cringing though- I hated those Gary Gygax adventures, utterly hated them.

I would love more options for feats that give a +1 to a  mental attribute and then some other benefit.  I want feats and/or archetypes that would make a Fighter want is mental attributes.
