$5000 for a selection of rings.

Looking good!

I notice that the entries have no gold piece value with them or any listings of how to craft such items.   I am totally fine with that, though I imagine others might be concerned by this.  I wonder if the DMG will have a table listing the items with suggested gp values and such?

I really like these items, and that they are "balanced" otherwise than by short or long rests. Personally I'm glad there is no gp value, I dont want any concept of "wealth per level" or  to encourage any magic shops etc. I hope they leave that sort of thing up to individual tables and their campaigns.

I kind of hope there's SOMETHING in the DMG that gives us an idea of what sort of price an item of a particular rarety might be expected to have. Just as a guideline. It would help with homebrewing items. Like, if I want to make a thunderstone an item alchemists can craft, the easiest way to price it would be to give it a comparable price to a scroll of Shatter or something.

The goat of travail seems...overly simple?  What is so travail-ish about 'becomes a goat'?

The playtest included general price ranges based on rarity, which might indicate that precise market prices are a thing of the past.

I am happy about what is seen in this preview.

Regarding the ivory goats, which is on the short list of items most commonly featured in my campaigns, I am glad to see the goat of travail being simply a big friggin' goat, rather than having a similar approach to the 3.5 version of the item that gave it special charge damage and the stats of a nightmare.

Also, seeing the goat of terror having the use of its horns as weapons clarified is cool, and I am glad that the +3 lance and +5 longsword are toned down to +1 lance and +2 longsword.

They forgot the onyx panther, man, this is like the most iconic figurine ever, how could they forget?!?

I want that Bronze Griffin.

One of my favorite characters was a Paladin with a griffon mount.

I wonder if they still have the pounce ability?

I'm more interested in the Eyes of the Eagle there. Looks like just the thing the Barbarian needs to finish his Hawkman costume.

Now I'm curious about  Flame Tongue following directly after Figurine of Wondrous Power. Apparently the DMG will list every magic item ever alphabetically, rather than going for the old weapons/armor/rings/scrolls/etc subcategories. Anyhow, I'm perfectly happy with what I see here and in the Deck of many thing preview. Well, except for the Folding Boat illustration. I's named Folding Boat, not Rolled-Up Boat; come on!!

I'm extremely pleased that magic items are no longer listed like a player character purchase catalogue. Having magic items returned to the control of the DM makes them unique, rare, and special again and one of my absolute favorite 5e design decisions.

The only problem I have is that I used to judge a magic items level of power based on it's gp value. This helped in my decision as to whether or not it would be an appropriate reward/find for a pc of a particular level without being imbalanced or unfair with respect to the rest of the party. Maybe this will simply encourage DMs to more carefully consider which items they decide to drop into their adventures. I'm ok with not having the best walmart price on magic items but a table that lists them in order of rarity and power level or groups them in levels of rarity/power level would be a nice inclusion in the DMs guide, imo.

As I said, I am glad the item shop is gone, but having values in the listing/table would be helpful for those times the party wants to sell an item as a general guideline.

The AD&D DMG had gp values in the tables, but not in the actual description which is why I asked about the table in my original reply above.

No gold value is a step in the right direction.

IMO, the game should not be supporting character buildz via magical items.   That's style of play can be relegated to an aberration.

The one big problem (and this may be addressed) that I'm concerned with thematically in the game is that with all this much-vaunted 'rarity' talk, if they're really as rare as everyone talks about then there's really no incentive to adventure past about level 5.  If gold and things worth gold are the only real reward, why would you keep risking your life after you have enough?  It'd be like Warren Buffet risking his entire investment portfolio on the riskiest scheme every day just for giggles.

For all the people I've heard talk about rarity that I personally know, I've never seen anyone follow through on it.  I'm reminded of the 2E player I know who told our DM at length how terribly rare magic items should be, needed to be, and all this other stuff...then when over at his house and looking through old characters, finding literally sheets filled with items his former characters had.  One in particular, a mere 12th level wizard, had SIXTY-FIVE items!!  His reply was something like "Wow, I don't remember having all those!"  But who gets excited over yet another long description of a gem or yet another stack of coins?

DM: "You find a large, fist-sized chalcedony with a near-flawless isometric cut set into a ring of elven-themed tooled platinum in the shape of..."

PLAYER: "Right, I'm not writing all that down.  How much is it worth?"

I'm not saying items need to fall from the sky like candy, but the whole concept of "You may only ever have one or two items!" means that 'rewards' are either a large stack of boring, something that breaks rarity, or the equivalent of a wizard's scroll bag in 3.5.  "Hey look guys, I have 10,000 one-shot scrolls/potions/rocks/beads/marbles/etc!"

But these are just concerns on magic in general.  The items I've seen so far look really nice, even if that third goat makes me blink just because its description is so...short compared to the other two.  But thematically I do like the goats.

I must admit that I am also suprised not to see the most iconic Black Panther Figurine but I guess that is Wotc tactic to make me buy the Forgotten Realms book.

I hope they have rules on magic items taking permanent damage, or being destroyed. That case will be front and center for mounts.

Would Guenhwyvar even be considered a FoWP as listed in the DMG? The text reads that they take no actions on their own unless you command them. She was off doing things on her own all the time without Drizzt telling her what to do.
