Finally we get a FRCS (light)

Didn't see any thread about it, so I though I'd might as well start one.

Finally: Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide

While it's not a real FRCS, at least it's something to fill the void

Hurray for Forgotten Realms players with 40 bucks.  I like the approach but I am patient for some Spelljammer stuff.

Interesting – I imagine we’ll be seeing the Realms detailed piecemeal like this, though hopefully we’ll see a DM-focused full FRCS, too. Surprised they didn’t start with the Moonsea area, though, since so much of the AL stuff takes place there.

Since they mention the swashbuckler, I wonder if this means that some of the other UA material has moved from "playtest" to "completed", and if so, which ones?

Well, it has player content. That’s a plus. Win!

But I don’t care about Forgotten Realms. Not at all. Perhaps Spelljammer? Dark Sun? Nerath/Standard 4e setting which I’ve been advocating the entire time here? Greyhawk? Eberron? Dragonlance? Come on, there are lots of settings so good or better than the Realms, I think we should give them some love. Of course, have your FR books all the way fans like, but you don’t need to dry out everything else.

On the other side, I decided to give 5e its fair chance. It’ll take a while, though. I have a list of things to read and plan to skip no one.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Rise of Tiamat. Yep, Sword Coast. Princes of the Apocalypse. Also Sword Coast. Rage of Demons. Yep.

Seriously, can the next book be somewhere else please. We've had eight (or is it nine?) computer games on the Sword Coast. Three adventure paths for 5E alone. Lots and lots of pre-5E material.

How about giving the Unapproachable East some more love? After all, D&D Expeditions is set near there.

How about just making adventures that are more than a hundred miles from each other?

Correct me if im wrong, but didn't the 1e/2e Forgotten Realms Adventures book have a similar design?  World, History, Gods, Geography, Races, Classes?  Granted I understand that it was probably the entire Forgotten Realms and not just a subsection.  I bring this up because it appears that WotC has been attempting to recapture some of the early AD&D feel.  That book could have something to do with its design model.

On a different note, the art is well done, but I have to admit that the art is my least favorite of all of the 5e books so far, not to mention compared to cover art on the 4e, 2e, Campaign book covers or the original box set.  Saylavee.

Torn on this.

Mixing a campaign setting and player's guide is always a bad idea, since you can't have DM secrets in the book, and you need to sacrafice world lore to fit in the player options. Plus, at $40 it's likely 256-pages, making it short for a Realms campaign guide. The reasoning is obvious: by mixing the focus the book appeals to Realms fans, people who want more options, AL players, and people looking for an accessory for Rage of Demons. In theory the product will sell better as a result. However, it also means no one audience is truely satisfied.

I imagine it could just be what it says: a FR guide that focuses on the Sword Coast and barely touches on the regions beyond the Heartlands, saving that for future books. But that seems odd.

#37

Devilbass

Jul 22, 2015 22:18:47
I'm sure there is an audience interested in just such an amalgamation of lore and mechanical crunch. I, for one, am excited by the sound of it. With any luck I will be truly satisfied.

This sets the stage for possible every year now WOTC will launch a new FRCG in a different area  of Forgotten Realms and it will contain similar elements as this one will with new races and subclasses and lore of the area.  Eventually we will get a PBH2 and those classes will be added into the mix of the FRCG stuff.

Mirtek, its is a smallish book, but it IS a campaign supplement. One book cannot possibly encompass the entire Realms, unless it provides a small sentence or two on each country/region. This book is a comprehensive setting book for the Sword Coast, which is where the new APs are featured. Why would I want a book on Thay if Im campaigning in Berdusk/Greenest/Phandelver/Waterdeep? Id rather they give a region good treatment rather than give me 2 sentences in a book for the entire continent.

And I disagree, it is not a 'light' supplement. Its a full fledged campaign guide.  Maybe we agree to disagree.

I hope all of the setting generic "crunch" material appears in a free web supplement. I have no interest in the Forgotten Realms in any medium - tabletop, MMO or CRPG - so buying a product that will be 95% useless is poor value for me.

Hm, my mobile seems to habe swallowed the last part of my answer. Short summary: You want info beyond the swordcoast if you don't give anything about WotC's premade adventures and want to run a FR game. Also the most comprehensive guide to Chicago is still not an USA Campaign Setting. SCAG is the successor to supplements like Neverwinter or The Shinning South but not a full FRCS

Hey WotC,

I gotta ask... what is your obsession with the Sword Coast? Seriously?! 5E Start Set—Sword Coast, Hoard of Dragon Queen—Sword Coast, Princes of Apocolypse—Sword Coast, Sword Coast Legends—Sword Coast, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide—Sword Coast, Lords of Waterdeep—Sword Coast, Neverwinter Nights—Sword Coast, Baldur's Gate—Sword Coast.

Are you seriously just running out of ideas? It sounds like you're playing a business model that extends your current library of content, so you don't have to develop anything new. You just keep rehashing your old stuff.

Enough with the Sword Coast already. Ed Greenwood developed a whole world for the players to explore. Where is the Forgotten Realms guide? Where is Dragonhawk or Eberron or Dark Sun?

I'm pleased with 5th Edition enough. You've created a good core rule system here. WAY better than 4th and a vast improvement on 3.5.

Now follow through. And stop shoving the Sword Coast down our throats.

You've lost me. I don't need any other core books. And I won't be purchasing anything Sword Coast related.

BEEN THERE. SEEN THAT! SHOW ME SOMETHING NEW! #sosickoftheswordcoast

If it covers the entire northwest of Faerun (that is a lot), and they go into the post-Sundering shenanigans (not that I acknowledged it to begin with), that would be cool.  As for the crunch, I am wondering if it will be generic enough for any setting, or will we be looking at subclasses like: Harper Scout, Red Wizard, etc.

#59

Honestly, I'm excited for any new crunch we get, especially subclasses and feats (assuming there are any). But I'm just as excited about the fluff and lore even though I don't run or play in the realms. My homebrew is perfect for picking apart pieces of existing settings, or dropping entire regions in whole cloth. I'm looking forward to it.

No, not all Adventure League is Moonsea. Expeditions are, but Encounters are Sword Coast.

Purple Dragon Knights are from Cormyr, so they're at least gonna have to have something about stuff from outside just the Sword Coast.

I kind of feel like WorC cant win at this point.

Many of us, my self included wanted a setting book, knowing that we would probably get an FR book if any at all.  Some people wanted a book that provided new crunch.  This book is anounced and many people (MYSELF INCLUDED) have complaints.  I for one am very excited about this book.  I plan to buy this book asap, but I hate the cover art.  It letterally makes me want to Punch a Bunny.   So how does WotC win?  How do they create a product that is approachable to new players, fulfills Hasbro's marketing requirments, allows the writers to be creative, provides something new and valuable to old fans, provides enough crunch for players, enough fluff for DM's, effectivly conveys the atmosphere, politics, and geography of a 30+ year old setting and make it affordable?

Seriously, how do they REALISTICALLY achieve this Herculean task?

I feel bad for them.  Again im just as guilty as many as I bitch about the cover art (this is actually very important to me as I derive tons of inspiration from cover art).

But I think they are in a catch 22.  Damned if they do and Damned if they don't.

To WOTC - Thanks for producing a FR setting book,  I appreciate it and will definently give it a try (even though I hate the cover art).  Please make more in the future.  (COUGH, Dark Sun, Planescape, Spelljammer) Cough, Cough

Thus far it looks like 5e will be the edition that has bits and pieces of campaign setting information scatered across several books and modules.  In this edition, you are forced to buy the extras to get the meat.

I was hoping they would release a small campaign setting update that's more general in nature.

I'm not a fan of the Sword Coast area, but I do think that focusing in on a smaller area within the FR is usefull.   I'm just not sure how much information this book will have beyond what the 2e source books I own have, but I'm sure I'll find something.  Of course, I'm more interested in FR updates that are applicable to my campaign area of choice (Bloodstone lands), which I suspect will never happen.

While the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide is a valuable resource for Dungeon Masters, it was crafted with players and their characters foremost in mind. There is a plethora of new character options to intrigue and inspire every member of the adventuring party.

This quote from the Press Release almost makes this sound more like a Players Guide......?  I wonder if they will anounce a Sword Cost Campaign Setting at a later date.  Maybe Gencon?

Swashbuclker only a subclass? What a pity? That is to waste an archetype with a great potential. Swashblucker should be the name for the future "Warblade" or "Swordsage", or a variant class.

While i am glad to see the first supplemental rules book for fifth edition.   In another way i am extremely dissapointed.

It was in some sense, obvious that FR was going to be the unofficial 'official' campaign setting for fifth.   Which i am fine with Fr is a great setting, if a little convoluted at this point.

But not releasing a full campaign setting is a real kick in the pants-the only justification i can think is that all there adventures are the in the swordcoast so maybe they wanted to hurry a product out for that area.   But in principle  what the company should do is release the full campaign setting.   Then later on make more detailed books on regions for release, like the dalelands or sword coast.

What i hope is that this doesnt signify a trend of campaign settings being sold with several books.   I dont mind paying even $50 books for a fleshed out campaign setting.   But i really dont want to spend $150 or $200 over 3 or 4 books.   Additionally me and my group are kind of OCD when it comes to settings.   I dont want my PCS trapped in the sword coast because i dont know whats going on in the rest of FR.

I like fifth edition and dont want D&D to die, so i will probably grant them this one buy.   But just the once if i see another campaign regional sourcebook come out before a campaign setting im going to officially consider them to be mismanaging fifth edition .   So WOTC, if you read these threads, PLEASE, if you want to make more suplimental books, do unearthed arcana, or warriors compendium, or players handbook 2, etc etc.   Dont do regional campaign sourcebooks without having first released the full campaign setting.

I really don't get all the venom in this thread; IT'S A NEW PRODUCT! IT HAS NEW CONTENT! Isn't this basically what everyone was asking for? Okay, I get that FR has been done to death for people who've been with D&D since THAC0 was a thing, but seriously, is this really a shock? As has been mentioned before, all the AL stuff so far has been FR, they've flat-out said they're sticking with FR for a while, and there's all kinds of cross-promotional multimedia buzz going on. Expecting them to just pop-out Dark Sun or something at this point is like expecting a waterfall to suddenly flow UP.

In any case, I'm mostly a player, and when I DM I usually just completely make stuff up, so I really don't care if the campaign book is about FR or Dragonlance or Planet Seti Alpha 6... as long as the crunch is solid, it can easily be given a new coat of paint to fit any setting. You don't like the name "Swashbuckler," in a non-pirate setting? Literally, all you have to do is cross off the name on your sheet and write "Fencer," or "Scoundrel," or "Hamburgler." Whatever.

Yes, it's only covering the Sword Coast, which is (as a liberal estimate) about 1/4th of the realms, maybe less. That just means that they'll be able to provide more rich detail on each specific area, rather than just painting everything with a broad brush. It's like "Specific beats general" as applied to publishing! I should also note that the release date for this book is only two months after Out of the Abyss, which was released FIVE months after the last actual product, PoTA. This could mean that WotC has heard all of our kvetching about the slow release schedule, and decided to step it up.

It's entirely possible that this is only the first book of four (five?) that are to be released every few months (let's say one per quarter?), each covering roughly one quarter of Faerun. So by the end of next year, we could have what is effectively a PHB2, an FRCG, and maybe a Martial/Arcane Power splat, for a grand total of $160-$200. The alternative that so many people are suggesting would be a huge $50 FRCG, and four or five $40 books covering each little section of the realms, plus the player material in separate $30-40 books. Am I missing something here?

Hopefully, this will be modelled on the excellent 4E Neverwinter Nights Campaign Setting. Small-scale setting books are much more useful at the table than large-scale ones.

However, there can't be any more doubt that at this point tabletop D&D is simply an avenue for selling the Forgotten Realms brand. As far as WotC is concerned, D&D is the Forgotten Realms.

I am glad to see that we will soon have our first setting specific "splat" book for 5e. I would however have preferred a Forgotten Realms Setting book rather than a regional book for Fae'run.

I'll give it a look at the FLGS before I commit to buying it. I am looking forward to more tangible content for 5e. What I do not want; is to exchange that for system bloat.

So people are basically wanting a detailed book about playing on the planet Earth with all of it's history and cultures in 256 pages so we have people upset that 256 pages of the Sword Coast is just too many pages for that area of the Realms.  Am I understanding this correctly?

I don't generally run games in the Realms.  Which is why a general FR book isn't that useful for me.  However, these focused regional books are more useful for me - I can drop a lot of the stuff into Greyhawk (where I do run my game) and it tends to work fine.  Because the stuff they are detailing the most is things like smaller towns, and adventures, most of which don't need to be tied to the Realms.  The difference between the Realms and Greyhawk, on the micro level, don't tend to be that great.  It's the macro big map stuff that tends to greatly differ.

I never asked for the expansion of the Anauroch desert to be explained, Zhentil Keep to be destoryed, or even Sembia to be detailed, but it's all said and done.

For the sake of the campaign setting, my hope with the new FR direction is that the designers select a pocket of the realms for their own junk and leave the remainder alone.

The Sword Coast is Ed's original location for what would later become the FR.    That seems a fiting place as any for official material and changes to be located.

With that said, the gaming community still needs a FR 5e update.    I want updated maps, npcs, monsters, gods, organizations, etc... you know all the basic stuff one would expect to find in a campaign setting.   If all we get are updates for the Sword Coast, well ... that's completely useless.

Without a FRCS type book I am still more likely to stay in the pre Spellplaghue Realms and if the game goes on  long enough ignore the Spellplague entirely. Killing off Cyric and brining back Bhaal migh be an option or just ignore the Time of Troubles as well. Sick of crappy RSE's.

Mystra returns in 1479 ending the Spellplague.

Sundering novels major events all take place between 1484-1487 (Companions is 1463-1484).

Tyranny of Dragons is 1489.

Princes of the Apocalypse is 1491.

Rage of Demons will be some time shortly after that, or possibly near the same time. The synopsis from Archmage says the threat over the Silver Marches is gone, so definitely after 1485. The State of Hillsfar Expeditions player supplement under one of the backgrounds says it's been a "few" years since Thultanthar's destruction (1487).

All that tells me we're looking at around 1490-1491, 11 or so years after 4e to be filled in.

I read the description of the supplement and while I'm intrigued I still have no reason why Purple Dragon knights are detailed in a supplement that is no where near Cormyr or anywhere near a Purple Dragon stronghold or base? Swashbucklers make sense as do sea-based subclasses like Storm clerics or weather-based Sorcerers but.....Purple Dragons??

Currently I am running HotDQ and hope to run RoT by the new year (We have a dozen pcs that takes a lot of time).  I passed on the PoA, I felt I didn't have the time to run it soon and interested in purchasing it just to read. I will purchase Rage of Demons because Im interested in reading it, it sounds really intriguing to me. If I run RoD it will be in my homebrew campaign. I'll alos get the new Sword Coast source book, because Im sure I can use the material in a homebrew campaign. You don't have to run a FR campaign to use FR based adventures and sourcebooks. I've used FR, Ebberon, Dark Sun, Greyhawk, Birthright, Oriental Adventures and many other sourcebooks for both my homebrew campaigns and established published campaigns. For example, I've used FR material in an Ebberon campaign and vica versa. What attracts me to the Sword Coast source book is that it is D&D5e source book and those are rare and far between. Regardless of the lack of 5e material published for sale, I am really happy with alll the free content available online. Just some really cool stuff for free, Thank you WotC.

I am a bit torn re: Purple Dragon Knight. On the one hand I'm excited about seeing an example of an organizational subclass. On the other I'd want them to include it in a possible future sourcebook about the Cormyr/Dalelands/Myth Drannor/Sembia region, but then I'd feel like the space could've been used for new stuff.

I foresee myself taking a day to add tabs to this book for easy access during gameplay. It has saved me so much table time when it comes to the PHB. I use red tabs for races, yellow for classes, and blue for everything else. This time I might add green tabs for bookmarking the different subregions of the Sword Coast as well.

What class do you think is getting the Purple Dragon Knight subclass? My guess is Paladin, due to the 3.5 PDK being able to continue gaining Paladin levels. Inspire Courage and Oath of Wrath would make good Channel Divinity options. Final Stand is a decent ability for 7th level Order ability.

Mistewell, do realize that the scales between the 5th Edition Map and the 3.5th Edition Map you posted are very different.  I purchased the high-resolution 5e map from Jared Blando, the official 5th Edition cartographer.  And when you inspect his map closely, you realize that in 5e the major city of Berdusk is directly south of the major city of Scornubel.   In the 3.5 edition map, Berdusk is clearly south-east of Scornubel.   Explanation?  Continental Shift?  Globe wrap?  Mind Flayers using some secret weapon to warp the coninents?  Who knows.

If we go solely by the 3.5e Map on its own merit, then I posted below a screenshot of the map with the Distance Scale included.  And the distance scale is to correct scale (even with image resizing, etc). The scale reads from 0 to 480 miles.  Now that we have that point of reference.... now we can talk about travel distance and travel time.  From Suzail to the Coastal cities.... at least several days ride by horse?  Looks to me like well over a week.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say maybe, just maybe they included some non-Sword Coast stuff in there just to throw a bone to those FR fans that like other regions of Faerun. Heck, I wouldn't even be surprised if they had brief entries (like maybe a paragraph or two) for other countries in Faerun and maybe a small map of the continent just to provide context for the Sword Coast to the larger setting. After all, it may be a while before we see coverage for other regions of the Forgotten Realms. That may not be the case, but as I said, I wouldn't be surprised if it were.

I think we will learn a lot about the future Product releases by what is announced right after the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide is released.

Is the SCAG the bookend that signals the end of the sword coast AP's and Story lines?

Will the next AP be in Cormyr?  If so then I would expect a coupel of AP's in that region and then a Cormyr Adventurers Guide book to close out the year and the region.

Will the next AP be undead focused and deal with FR party going into the mists that lead to the Domains of Dread?  If so then I would expect a couple of AP's dealing with that subject followed by a "Ravenloft" region guide if you will.

The same could go for any of  the settings that are "connected" to the Forgotten Realms.

If the follow up release to the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide is another AP set in the Sword coast then I would expect the entire year to be more of the same.

I know that WotC stated that they were only going to do AP's but SURPRISE!!!!!  SCAG!  So maybe there is hope for other settings.

Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure it was debunked that they'd ONLY do AP's. That was a misunderstanding that grew out of the talk about the fact that they'd only announced AP's so far and that their marketing strategy is to only talk about their next product to come out so they can generate hype and interest in it and not distract people with talk about future products. They've also stated they have entirely in-house projects in the works which likely means not APs.
