| #1EvenglarexiAug 04, 2014 19:36:05 | All over the internet piddly little complaint about EVERYTHING spew forth from the vile recesses of these forums. Very rarely do you hear "You guys did great!" or "I really love X about this edition". It's always "Why can't I do this" or "I don't like how this works" etc etc. That's fine, you can have those questions, but also please try and acknowledge the good. This system is more balanced (debatably) than any current incarnation of D&D we have had. Not only that, but this player's handbook has has more options in the game than ANY core D&D (or any other d20 fantasy-esque) system we have EVER seen! It's AWESOME!
So I'm taking this time to personally thank wizards for the the play tests, for releasing the basic game for us for FREE, to give us an amazing book with amazing art and a wealth of content, and simply just listening to us this time around. They set almost unattainable goals, to unite all D&D players from any edition, to give us the options to run the game type WE - the players - want. And they have largely hit that target in my point of view.
Of course you can't please everyone all the time, but this is about as close as an attempt I personally can imagine. So again, thank you WOTC.. thank you for an amazing game that I am so excited about beginning. |
| #2kanageddaamenAug 04, 2014 19:57:39 | Well you know what they say, you can't please all of the people all of the time, but you can get people to passionately complain on the internet about things the majority of people are happy with/excited about all of the time. |
| #3AaronOfBarbariaAug 04, 2014 21:08:11 | Since the post I was originally responding to has been removed, I will instead say the following:
I am absolutely happy with D&D 5e, and even the few rules I don't like (critical hits - never been a fan) aren't a big enough issue for me to complain about them being included.
It is the game my group and I are most excited about currently, and we are currently playing through the Starter Set and loving it, while I and the other DM in the group are excitedly planning out new campaigns using the new rules (which has proven tough, but not tough enough to dull our excitement, because the rules parts we need to finalize our plans don't exist yet). |
| #4ChaosmancerAug 04, 2014 20:44:33 | I'm also glad for the game so far, but perhpas the biggest thanks has to go to the Basic rules. That alone makes this edition something special as now anybody with internet access (and either a printer or lots of determination) can join in on the fun.
Because it's late and I'm loopy this seems to be the best way to express it
"You get a game, you get a game, and you get a game. Everyone gets a game" |

| #6THEMNGMNTAug 04, 2014 21:17:00 | +1 to OP. |
| #7lawrencehoyAug 04, 2014 21:24:33 | I would also like to gongratulate the design team for a set of rules that can be interpreted in ways that support a multitude of playstyles. This has been a primary design goal from the beginning; and, I think they've succeeded wonderfully.
I've seen people complaining that the rules aren't specific enough (or, at least, that some rules aren't specific enough); but, making them more specific would just narrow the playstyles that can be played RAW. I think that would be a great disservice to the game; and, endanger the success of this edition (by making players of certain playstyles disgruntled, possibly driving them away).
It is my hope that the designers realize this fact and stay firm on a "use your own interpretation; whichever works best for your table" rules mindset; and don't make unnecessary errata, that limits or narrows the scope of the current rules. |
| #8TiaNadiezjaAug 04, 2014 21:25:17 | I adore Fifth Edition. I adore the game's rules on the page, peppered with flavor without sacrificing playability. I adore the experience of the game at the table, where I can do a full dungeon crawl with a lot of story and roleplaying time in 1-2 sessions and everyone has fun. I adore the customizability, where I've already designed multiple races and a subclass I'm confident in balancing with the rest of the game, and where when the playtest docs ran out of monsters for my players I was able to build new ones easily and quickly. I love its inclusiveness of playstyle, where I'm running a BECMI-style series of dungeon crawls with a Second Edition-style fighter, a wizard and rogue who come right out of First Edition, and a Cleric who would feel at home in Third Edition, but the game doesn't break andthe underlying math accomplishes the goals of balance and integrated mechanics Fourth Edition aimed for. I adore the inclusiveness of concept expressed in the art and on Page 33 of the Basic document.
I dislike two entries on the Credits page, and I'm a little nervous how the Warlock will work out. I've had to institute a small house rule on the Wild Mage sorcerer to avoid a single potential outcome that would be destructive to my games.
On the balance? Best. D&D. Ever.

| #10Kiraya_TiDrekanAug 04, 2014 23:18:57 | 5th Edition is my favorite version of D&D thus far and my RPG of choice at the moment.
:D |
| #11PsikerlordAug 04, 2014 23:41:27 | Aye, well done devs. I like 95% of what I've seen, and REALLY like the "tailor the game to make it your own" vibe 5e is giving out. |
| #12ParaxisAug 05, 2014 0:09:54 | Are you serious? These forums and pretty much every other rpg forum is nothing but people who think nothing is wrong with 5e at all and if you dare make even one small negative comment a hoard of fan boys jump up to defend it.
Yes it is a good system, so good for WoTC. Does the system have major flaws yes it does, could they have done a better job, yes they could have. Will I run it once or twice a week anyway, yes I will.
But come on, any negativity you see about 5e is nothing compared to the negativity that 3e, 3.5, 4e, or 4e essentials got when they came out. |

| #17NautilusAug 05, 2014 1:08:43 | The 5e Player's Handbook, and the volumes to follow, are gonna provide me with rock solid Sunday evening entertainment for the foreseeable future.
Fifth Edition is my kind of game, and that's all I ask of it. |
| #18Xeviat-DMAug 05, 2014 2:10:52 | Positivity doesn't breed creativity. "Yay, the game is perfect!" means nothing about the game can grow; it's done, perfect, finito. Complaints about small aspects of the game say, to me at least, "I really love this game, and I wish it were better".
So, of course people are going to say more negative things than positive things. I think Wizards will see the positivity in the game's sales; I doubt they would care if the message board was alight with positivity if there were no sales to back it up. |
| #19DaganevAug 05, 2014 2:28:07 | The gulf betwen positive and perfect is possitiviely enourmous.

| #21ssvegeta555Aug 05, 2014 2:46:28 | I played all trough 3e and 3.5 and loved it. I left D&D around 4e came out. It just didn't click for me. I explored other games at that time, playing World of Darkness, Savage Worlds, Eclipse Phase, Witch Hunter the Invisible World and so on. I then went to pathfinder as I loved 3.5 still and I saw that as new beginning for an old friend. But that system got too blaoted my tastes. I scoffed at the idea of 5th edition at first, but having read the basic and rules and running the starter set for multiple groups, I'm hooked. 5th edition brought me back into the fold and I couldn't be happier. To me, 5th edition has 3e mechanics and 2nd edition feel with some good 4e bits. |
| #22DLfanAug 05, 2014 3:01:47 | I would like to say Thank You to WOTC. I was very skeptical of D&D 5E after 4E and especially with Mike Mearls at the helm since in my experience Mike know martial flavor very well (Iron Heroes was an awesome book) but he does not seem to grasp arcane flavor at all. But so far I am so excited. The rules seem to realy favor old school play with interesting innovations from 3rd & 4rth edition brought in to keep martial characters interesting. I always hated rogues in previous editions and was not even a fan of them in 3rd. Now, I am playing a halfling rogue in the Mines boxed set and I love him. That is a huge turn around and I do credit WOTC with making the character fun and interesting to play without making him feel over-powered. I therefore think the other classes will be fun to play with. My only complaint is the artwork. I am hoping the Monster Manual will be better. (I think it will.) So yes, Thank You WOTC, you have done well. |
| #23Caliburn101.Aug 05, 2014 3:08:24 | The highest accolade I can give 5th. Edition is that of all the D&D editions ever released, this is the one I finally want to base a large and complex homebrew campaign around.
Bounded Accuracy makes far more sense of a living breathing and (to cater to my preferences) sandbox world.
Dials on magic item availability, healing et al allow a campaign to be more 'yours' and less just another version of 'theirs'.
Overall, the relatively few problem issues and poorly drafted rules are all capable of being houseruled-away and will undoubtedly be errata'd in the online offering quickly enough. Moreover, there may be tools available to do it in line with intended balancing available in the core books as well as homebrew stuff like backgrounds, sub-classes, spells and monster powers. These are all welcome firsts for a core rulebook release in D&D.
I am eager to get running my homebrew and having D&D 5th. Edition as the long-term platform in my gaming future. |

| #26RottleAug 05, 2014 6:20:19 | There isn't much in 5e I like. I keep hearing about 2e feel cannot see it. I look at 5e and see 4.5, sorry I do. Still I wish you all the best with this edition hopefully you can enjoy it for years to come.
Still there have been positive threads before and will be again. They draw little interest because other then back slapping not much can come from them. Problems can be addressed, rules can be changed or clarified, missing items can be added. |
| #27EvenglarexiAug 05, 2014 6:36:19 | I think some of you missed the point. I'm not saying don't complain about things you hate. Infact I'm pretty sure I stated that in my opening post, so.... if you missed it please attempt to read better. What I am saying is that we should thank the people that worked on this game for us. Hundreds probably thousands of combined man hours, and for me this is the first topic I have seen that actually is only about congradulating the devs. So go and complain all you want! No one here is stopping you, just please acknowledge that saying thanks has an equal value to lift the morale of people on message boards. It gets pretty old after a while seeing nothing but complaints complaints complaints, but hey, this IS the internet. |
| #28Emerikol.Aug 05, 2014 8:27:02 | I think 5e does a lot of things very well. I still can't give it an unqualified vote of approval.
I do think that forums thrive on disagreement. Just singing kumbaya all day long is boring. I think 5e is being received fairly positively. Still those commenting are of course negative because that is the nature of most comments. If the game is 99% perfect then the thing most people will comment about is the 1%. Call it feedback.
I don't like modern day healing so that entire aspect of the game is a big fail for me. I also do not like the way they did the simple fighter in many cases. I don't like the 1 hour short rest.
I like the rest of 5e pretty well. I can take or leave the spell casting system for the wizard but I'd be willing to give it a try. |
| #29AquaticSpaceChickenAug 05, 2014 8:34:38 | I have a general feeling of goodwill towards WotC. The public playtest was great, and allowed me to give them my feedback. They didn't do everything I told them to (I need to work on my All Powerful Overlord skill during downtime, I guess; not enough people realize that they should just Do Whatever I Say Because I Said So. Or maybe I am too lackadaisical to be a good dictator. Whatever.), but I still feel like they listened and considered what I had to say. Plus, free Basic.
So, yeah, thank you, WotC. I think you are doing a great job with 5e. Also, I am looking forward to all the new adventures I can collect and use. |
| #30Plaguescarred1Aug 05, 2014 9:37:20 | Good job Wizards! 5E give me so much fun to run or play with friends, family and even complete strangers! |
| #31tallric_kruushAug 05, 2014 9:46:58 | I was very skeptical about 5E when it was announced, and disappointed to see 4E's failure to catch on brought full circle. I did not participate in the playtest, despite signing up. My only exposure was through a few of the adventures released during that time.
Now that it's here, I must say they did a good job.
So, well done guys! I really look forward to enjoying the fruits of your labors. I hope it's a monstrous financial success, leading to a ton of published content (for us!) and plenty of job security in the career you love (for each of you |

| #36vacthokAug 05, 2014 10:32:00 | There's a difference between critiquing the game, pointing out confusing bits, or identifying problems and engaging in the "GAWD the devs are so stupid! Clearly, using the word "and" in this sentence makes this completely broken and forces me to utilize every single angry person cliche to express how I'm not going to buy the game unless they immediately fix this and allow me to lord my superior designing skills over them from now until perpetuity" style of "criticism" that the internets are so good at fostering.
So yes. Whatever the warts on the game are, real or imagined, present or yet to be found, kudos to the people at Wizards for designing the new system that gets me and others really damned exicted about playing it!
|
| #37Mr_TreeginsAug 05, 2014 11:00:00 | I find the new Dungeons and Dragons game very well designed too and I think that from the 3/3,5 edition (which I hated with a passion) onwards, the game has gotten better.

| #38strider13xAug 05, 2014 11:21:23 | I've been congratulating the Next crew sinse early in the playtest and I am glad some else has started a thread now 5e has been released. I post on the forums less and less due to the negativity and individuals fulfilling personal political adjendas that have nothing to do with D&D. If more folks would find ways to critique and add to the discussion rather than bash the system and the folks involved this forum could be a fun, creative space for all who come here. So kudos to the OP and thanks to WotC for giving us this space to discuss and expand on our favorite hobby, D&D! |
| #39BrightmantleAug 05, 2014 11:24:25 | Yep, good job "so far" Wizards! What we have thus far is good. 5e. might shape up to be my second favorite edition. |

| #43zoroaster99Aug 05, 2014 14:22:35 | I had very little interest in 5th Edition when I first heard about it, and was frankly annoyed at the edition change. But WOTC won me over and am already running the Starter Set adventure and eagerly awaiting the Player's Handbook and Hoard of the Dragon Queen. So WOTC must have done something right in the development of WOTC and its marketing. Now my big question is whether the game will be as fun at mid and high level as it looks to be at low level. But at the very least it is brining us joy already so, thanks, WOTC, indeed. |
| #44CelticPaladinAug 05, 2014 14:32:44 | I disagree that positivity kills creativity. It's just wrong. A positive atmosphere creates idea fluency. Disagreements can still be done positively. As can quibbles.
I am really enjoying 5th edition so far, so agree with the OP to an extent. However, I think it best for my personal sanity to simply not engage with those who are exhibiting problem behaviors. This doesn't mean people who have problems with 5th edition. This simply means those who go about their arguments (for or against 5th) in an unhealthy manner that doesn't engender positive discussion and idea fluency.
Half of a negative atmosphere are problem posters. The other half are the people who engage them. |
| #45DiffanAug 05, 2014 15:01:31 | So far I'm finding things I like and the game has some bright spots. Unfortunately my group seems pretty happy with v3.5, Pathfinder, and 4e currently so that leaves little time for Next. Maybe in a year or so I'll run another adventure after more supplements come out. |

| #47spelleyAug 05, 2014 15:16:43 | Positive, constructive criticism leads to things like Ramzour's Stat Save mod and to new Backgrounds where there are perceived holes. Negative, unconstructive criticism leads to hyperbolic declarations of "broken" without any propositions on how such things would be "fixed" (aside from Burn It All And Start Over) |
| #48BadMikeAug 05, 2014 17:48:54 | This is my favourite iteration of D&D since 2nd, and if I can avoid looking at my first gaming experiences through rose-coloured glasses, this looks to be the best version of the rules that I've ever played.
Is it my perfect edition? No - and I don't think many will be able to make that claim. Anything this big will almost certainly have some rules choices that each individual would have made differently.
But overall, I love it. A great job all-around by Mearls & Co. |

Honestly, I don't think WotC needs a thread saying "Bravo!" (Not that this thread wasn't started with the best of intentions! It's a fine sentiment that is great for us fans to share with each other.)
Truth is...
You want to compliment Wizards of the Coast and the contributors on what you think is a good edition and game... what they need is to hear it through your wallet (or purse, etc).
Go out and buy. :-) Nothing says Thank You more to a business than your continued patronage. Believe me, they'll hear you much louder that way than on these forums.

So tomorrow night our poor DM has to deal with seven players. |
