Goodbye, friends.

In an attempt to assuage the oncoming sadness of a thousand disparate threads seeking to share final words one poster at a time, I thought I'd start a central place from which each of us could say farewell — not for ourselves, but to each other.

I have given much to this place, and received much in return. I thank all who have contributed to my game — through welcome support, through welcome challenge; smiles and struggles. I am better for it, my experience with D&D is better for it, and I hope this place has been everything it has needed to be for every one of you.

Goodbye, friends. May your dice be kind always, may our screen names cross our minds when topics of passion arise at home, and may we always reflect back on the things we did here — for our hobby — in the name of something we all loved.

Tomorrow!

So long, mrpopstar.  I've enjoyed reading your comments over the years.  Move it over to ENWorld (if you aren't therer already) and continue to be a constructive member of the community.  Cheers.

Now, you are one of the very few, if any, posters that is good and true, that I will actually miss, good luck in your future endeavours, whatever they might be, you seem like a good person, that deserves good things.

Good bye, though my time here was short lived.

...back on track, if only briefly...

This forum, and the people on it, are my whole gaming community. I was curious about D&D in high school but never had the chance to play, despite hearing more and more about how awesome a hobby it was over the years, until a few years ago when I started playing with friends. I was directed to this board to check out the 4e guides, which let me eventually introduce myself to the 5e sections, and wow. I went through a decade of D&D experience in a few months. There have been so many people with so much experience and so many perspectives, having conversations of varying but generally high intelligence, and letting me participate in them and vampirize their knowledge. I'm familiar with each name in this thread, and most names on the forum, because everyone was part of those valuable discussions. I'll never grow as much again as I did here.

It's been swell.

. . . I'm starting to wish WotC had just closed down the place without warning.

That would work, too. Better for us, actually.

I will miss this place. If not for these forums, I would not have so easily gotten back into dnd  after losing interest as 3.5 wore on, and my high school buddies got busy with life. I love social media, and there are great forums out there, but many noobs will never find those forums, and social networks aren't the same. They do not lend themselves half as well to prolonged, dedicated discussion.

I hope that the community does not suffer from the lack of these forums as I have benefited from their existence. I hope that the brilliant humans who made these forums worth visiting find new homes worthy of them, run and inhabited by people who are willing to invest in heir communities.

Thank you all, even the folks I butt heads with. We were pretty great.

While sad to see these boards go, let us not get all maudlin... If we all want to stay talking about D&D stuff with each  other, that's easy—ENWorld seems like the obvious choice as some of us already have accounts there as well, and it looks like there's already refugees from these boards heading over there (and, besides, they've got far better forum software than this place). Same Bat Time, different Bat Channel, as it were.

So, this shouldn't be goodbye, just see you on a different forum.

I'd like ENworld better if it split up subforums like here. I've always liked having rules, char op, and general discussions separated that way.

I'll probably stagger over to a couple of other sites after this one closes down, and maybe I'll make myself known there, too. But this was the first forum I ever joined, so I plan to be standing on the cliff sticking my tongue out at eternity as the red sun expands to burn away this reality.

...My apologies, I don't usually wax quite that poetic. I meant I'm going to keep the forums open in a browser window until they get deleted.

I'll be turning eighteen in a few weeks, and all you good people have contributed a good deal to the way I've turned out over the past four and a half years.

I don't know half of you half as well as- no, that's been done.

Anyway, thanks to you all.
