I have been working a biut on my camapign but I am also thinking of running Greyhawk as my default setting. My PCs do not really know the lore of GH very well when compared with FR for example and I have recently bought the 1983 GH boxed set and have not really used it. That boxed set has the Darlene maps of the world and I also have the 3.5 poster sized maps of the world. The Greyhawk Pantheon is also on page 295 of the PHB. The PHB anand boxed sets to give you an idea of the size of the maps.
The 1983 Maps
However Paizo also made 4 poster sized GH maps and put them in Dragon magazine. Said maps are based heavily on the Darlene maps and they have added the various sites of the classic AD&D 1st Ed Modules to them.
The last adventure path that was in Dungeon Magazine (The Savage Tide) also put the Isle of Dread in Greyhawk. My PCs are currently here the city of Sasserine.
Sasserine was located south of the Greyhawk maps to the lands south of the Scarlet Brotherhood. A closer up view of the map.
So I have these Greyhawk materials and I am very tempted to use them. It saves me a lot of time designing a world and I think somw of this stuff looks great. I missed most of the 2nd ed Greyhawk stuff so I will just use the 83 boxed set. I can also get away with excluding certain things I do not like as they do not exist on GH and they did not blow up Greyhawk to the extent they did with the Spellplague so I can avoid that neo retcon of the sundering as well.
So to Greyhawk or not to Greyhawk is the question. I have run games set on Greyhawk before and the PC know Hommlet for example but I never really played up the Greyhawk angle before. Tenser, Melf and Mordenkainen will all exist, and I can drop in Sasserine, Scuttlecove and Threshold easily enough. The appeal of going back to where it really started stong atm.
Leaning heavily towards a naval type game where the PCs sail to various iconic GH places and maybe do an adventure set there. The wealth form dungeon crawling can turn them into merchant princes in Sasserine and they have access to exotic goods such as coffee. |

Have fun and let us know how it goes! |
| #5Ath-kethinSep 08, 2014 15:27:05 | So, are you asking us to try and talk you out of running Grayhawk? Cause I think most of us will say do it - you have a great starting point, fantastic maps, and you clearly want to. Why would you NOT run Grayhawk? |

| #8DevilbassSep 08, 2014 16:02:41 | I had the 1983 boxed set about 15 years ago when I was still just a kid. I loved it, and wish I still had it. Really hoping they do some old-school boxed set campaign settings for 5e. If I had all that stuff, i would definitely be running a campaign in Greyhawk. |

| #22AkeishaSep 08, 2014 19:36:40 | That is a gorgeous set and it would be such a waste not to run with it! ;) |
| #23ShasarakSep 08, 2014 19:37:08 | I am sure your home brewed rules will be fine. |
| #24BrightmantleSep 08, 2014 19:43:28 | Look Zard: You like Greyhawk and want to run it old school? Do it. Who cares what others who aren't players at your table think? If you and your players are happy -rock it. |

| #33THEMNGMNTSep 08, 2014 22:52:11 | Go for it. You've got a wealth of older and newer material to draw from and you can modify it as necessary to make it your own. Using a pre-existing campaign world doesn't mean you're locked into somebody else's vision. Sasserine is a fun location and the first half of the Savage Tide AP is solid stuff. |

But eh, Greyhawk doesn't do it for me. |

Wonderful resource if you are happy to run a canon game post Greyhawk-Wars.
Me... I am thinking of running a Greyhawk game that is set a century later (so Wars etc. are all historical) with only an old Mordenkainen left alive of the 8 and the re-constitution of The Great Kingdom with the now fully reconstituted Ivid the Undying as it's new Lich King - with Vecna as the state religion, so Iuz isn't the only game in town... |

I don't have the maps with the adventure locations from dragon magazine though. I wonder if such a map would be available online?
I say go for it! Especially if your players don't know much about it. Nice idea on adding the other region too.
Don't go bidding against me now folks |
| #47sgt_dSep 10, 2014 14:54:03 | Those 1e maps from Darlene are incredible; I wish they still made maps that way.
Either way, sounds like the Greyhawk 5e game should be fun. Some of my players want me to convert my Birthright docs, so that may be coming down the pike for me when this current campaign is over. |
