It needs to come with something. Personally, I think the -2 to attacks is the least interesting option. In Dark Sun, I prefer the food/water consumption penalty. In other games, I would prefer a -2 to AC or Disadvantage on all Dexterity checks. Still, it seems that we are now discussing semantics and are largely in agreement, so whatever.

Revised Half Giant Race

Half Giant

  • Ability Score Adjustment: +2 Str +2 Con
  • Powerful Build - You are larger than a Medium sized creature. Your space is 10 ft by 10 ft, you count as Large to determine your carrying capacity, and you count as Large for grapples and shoves.
  • Giant Heritage - You are a giant, not humanoid so you are not affected by spells that target only humanoids.
  • Fire Acclimated - You have advantage on Con checks to resist heat and on saving throws vs fire.
  • Speed - 30 ft
  • Rock Hurling - You are proficient with improvised thrown weapons, they deal 1d8 damage
  • Oversized Weapons - You wield larger than normal weapons. Increase the damage of the weapons you wield by 1 step (d6 to d8, d10 to d12, etc) but you suffer a -2 penalty to attack rolls with them. Note: both 1d12 and 2d6 become 2d8.

Zard I'm not complaining about your class version that is specifically one of the ways to make a problem race like the half giant work.

BUt handing out the 'traditional' half-giant and presenting it as a race option next to the standard PHB races (except non variant human which may in fact be just as if not more broken, but in a more overall manner rather than being overspecialized), is just flat OP.

Any weapon using class will be better off with the half-giant and any trick that could be used to compensate the HG could make use of as well and come out ahead once more. Even that dueling style can be used by th HG to put it out ahead again.

NOw penalties to AC, speed, and/or the major saving throws, might actually work for a race. However you still don't address the issue of the race being completely useless for non-weapn users, which means that you're actively punishing people who wanna play the race witha  different class.

Zard, should the 'rocks' have the versatile ability because I think a two handed rock would have more impact.

Also You're still taking too much from the fighter chart change some of those any ability boosts into something else, I've given plenty of suggestions, and you have you're own set of abilities that could be improved like more brute shots or damage ups.

Oh yeah: as for large creatures dealing additional weapon damage, just look in the free DMG. While not a rule, this something that can be inferred based on creature size:

Ogre is large (+1W). Their great club does 2d8, their javelin does 2d6.

Minotaur is large. Their greataxe does 2d12.

Hill Giant is huge (+2W). Their great club does 3d8 damage.

Frost Giant is huge. Their greataxe does 3d12 damage.

Fire Giant is huge. Their greatsword does 6d6 damage.

All large+ size weapon users follow the same trend for manufactured weapons. Natural weapons do not follow a discernible pattern.

I'm not going with increased damage dice for the HG due to problems it has caused in 3rd and 4E. Being large the HG can use two handed weapons in one hand thaty is the boost to damage there. The average danage is very similar to a normal fighter taking the duelist fighting style which the half giant cannot do. The one thing that makes me go hmmmnn with that thogh is level 4 taking a feat like the great weapon feat which someone using the duelist feat could not do. Thats why I am using the fighter class as a chasis so I can use it for an easy comparison.

Why when the class operates more like a barbarian?

Attacks less often but goes for the heavy hits.

Also just because you stated out with the fighter as a skeleton doens't mean you can't change the features more. That's the whole point of making a class!

Any simpler than the champion and it would be a 3e warrior.

Anyway, Ok first of all is there anything you'd like to include but have trouble expresisng mechanically?

I'd like to install a sort of brute force class ability where they can make use of their massive strength once per round in order to do things like fling people or crash through walls.

If half giants are a class, I want to run a halfling half-giant-- a jungle dwelling, cannibalistic half-giant.
