Half Hobgoblin and hobgoblin race...

So I am busy converting my Kingdoms of Kalamar books to 5E, because the setting is a pretty good match to the lower magic feel of 5E. As Kalamar is one of the rarer played settings, some of you might not know that there are hobgoblin kingdoms and half hobgoblins. Along with 5 sub species for orcs.(Which were easy to convert)

Currently I am debating about what half-hobgoblin and hobgoblins racials should be. Stats are easier, however the standard monster ability for Hobgoblin is pretty OP for PCs so I am trying to come up with a simular but "balanced" raical for the race.

I have also considered racial armor training and weapon profs but those are not the issue as stated above. I would rather it be on par with the half orc race.

Any thoughts?

Edit: I am also trying to make a "path" for fighter that goes with the Kalamar specific class Brigand. Which is a fighter/rogue mash up. I am compairing it to EK and Champion to gauge its "balance" To try and keep it in line with the power curve.Thinking capping sneak attack dice at 1 or 2 to replace crit from champion ect. I will post when I finish that as well.

Well traditionally hobs are known for being tough, agile, disciplined and organized.

Do you want sub-races?

As for racial features I'd suggest either something that shows off their drive and will power such as being able to get back up from taking a hit, or shrugging off conditions.

Either that some sort of tactical maneuvering ability.

I created a Hobgoblin race a while back when basic was first released.

I haven't updated some aspects... for instance races used to get advantage on a skill rather than proficiency in the skill, so that ought to be changed.

My basic philosophy is that the traits seen in the Monster Manual entry are not actually racial skills but in fact class skills. In terms of the Hobgoblins you typically encounter in a fight, they are Fighter 1/Rogue 1 NPCs with a special alternate Rogue trait that replaces the usual backstab.

A Hobgoblin player would initially start off as a bit weaker than the typical trained Hobgoblin soldier, but would very quickly catch up though they would almost certainly take a different class route than most typical soldiers.
