Has Anyone Encountered That Dragon Yet?

I'm really curious to see how many TPK's will arise from that encounter with the green dragon in the Starter Set adventure.  A cookie to anyone who provides a full report!

Give me a couple months probably and I'll let you know :P

One of the player's in my group has expressed that, if his character is ever near enough to see the dragon, he intends to walk up and try to talk the dragon into leaving... so I expect that things will invaribly turn sour (he's not very skilled at negotiation - always acts like he is the one holding all the cards, even if he isn't) the rest of the party will try to "save" him and a TPK seems likely.

I'll be sure to share whatever transpires... since there is an outside chance my players actually approach the dragon situation intelligently, and if they do I give them decent odds to take it down without suffering losses.

Is the dragon easy to find, is he going to let the party escape if they make a quick getaway?

Hopefully getting knocked down to 0 hp by goblins and hobgoblins will cue them in that a humungous dragon is something they probably shouldn't get on the bad side of.

I think a strong 4th level, or especially 5th level, party (I'd say even 4 PCs, as opposed to 5 or 6) will kill that dragon, or at least cause it to flee. They'll need to play it smart, spread out to avoid everyone getting caught by that super strong breath weapon, and they should prevail. Most of the party will be down before the end, but with ranged healing word etc on hand, they'll do it. I suspect it will be easier to win the fight after we see PHB and all the options therein.

If on the other hand the dragon gets the drop on them ...  and they all cop the breath weapon in a suprise round.... well they'll be real dead real quick!!

Opening the following spoiler officially releases me from any ill will you might have at reading spoilers for the adventure.

my two cents

I haven't completely read through the starter adventure, but I do recall the mention of a piece of magic armor that helps you against dragon breath (I think it gives you advantage on the save).  That could certainly help with the PC survival rate.

From a strategy perspective, if you clear the surrounding area of foes and draw out the dragon, you might be able to divide and pepper it with ranged attacks from the various ramshackle buildingins.

That's a really bad analogy, but you do need twisted ones to try and maintain your position as it is kind of absurd.

Your entire position is absurd. Is it metagaming if your Paladin player tells you he'll react with hostility towards any Undead he encounters? Of course not. Because it isn't taking advantage of meta information  gratuitously shared as in your inept analogy, but describing how a fictional character would react to a hypothetical situation.

On Wed my group goes up against it. I think I've convinced them it's at Cragmaw Castle (since they saw the picture and noticed the name on it's stat block earlier) they went around talking to folks after taking out the bandits and decided that getting the treasure from there is near the top of quick errands  One player seems to feel that they can kill it somehow. Which is weird cause he's the one who normally has monster blocks memorized. Yay for new editions; and the unknown.  (you'd think having one of the bandts knock him out with just advantage would make him more cautious about monsters, but I guess they're good luck vs the bugbears have made them over confident)
