I didn't see this announcement mentioned on the boards anywhere else...  I know it's only My Little Pony for now, but maybe they'll open it up to DnD figures (kre-o or otherwise)?

Or are DnD tropes generic enough that this won't matter?

Can 3D printers create pieces of action figures?

I would love to create my own version of D&D playmobil figures, or  D&D (G.I.Joe style) action figures, or d20 Future aliens.

Metal printers are too expensive for your home user, yes.

But you can get a nice multi-color plastic 3d printer for about $3000.  With about $0.50 per mini.

Which isn't cheap, but still achivable by many house holds.

That said, this is going to be a small buisness thing for now same as photo copy stores (kinko's, ect..) where a thing 20 years ago.

With shapeway, or hero forge your FLGS, collage computer labs, and even some local library's will pick them up.

Then over the next 10 years or so, it will slowly show up in people's houses untill everyone has one.

Software will also become more user friendly in the next 5 or so years.

In a near future the 3D printers will be in the houses... or you can go to a shop (copy, toy, comic, a cybercafé) and you would "rent" the 3D printer to create your figure.

I guess the next step will be prepainted by machine.

Other option can be to use the 3D printer to create the mold and you would add the filling with the colors you want.

But my opinion is the most popular option will be the cheapest, only to buy the miniature plinth to add paper figures.

I would like a creator of characters like one from sims medieval, and creator of monsters and vehicles like one videogame "Spore". You would print it to create your customizated paper minatures.

---

I would rather playmobil because never we have got LEGO at my home. LEGO figures are too small for me.

I have remembered a old cheap toy from my childhood. The Montaman and the Montaplex... it was like the green plastic soldier miniatures from "Toy Movie".

Do you think the 3D printer could be used to create a modern version of "Montaman"?
